The writers invented Nacho's character when they started working on Better Call Saul. I think they went through every one of his scenes and lines and built on that. Like the first time we see Saul, he tells Walter that his real name's McGill. And I don't know if you remembered, Saul also told Walt at one point that he convinced a woman he was Kevin Costner in order to sleep with her. Marco's ring is the same Saul wears in BB. It's interesting that along with Cobra Kai, you're currently watching both the perfect sequel and the perfect prequel :P
