2020-08-17 23:43:05 +0000 UTCI love this film so much. Kate is a strong and complex character, and yet at the same time she doesn't win because of the insurmountable forces against her. More impactful than other strong female leads where everything works out, you can totally sympathize with the horrifying realism of her inability to overcome things like her would-be rapist/murderer (as far as she knew at the time). Her disposition allows you to feel her dread -- but she never gives up, which is hugely respectable. Even after a gun is put to her chin, she reassembles her gun and faces down the assassin on the balcony. Matt (the CIA guy) asked her about her marriage and child status specifically because it was illegal - he wanted to know if she would tolerate someone else skirting the rules without telling on them. And she stood her ground in the sense that she was curt and offered zero information beyond what was asked. She was subtly indicating that she acknowledged that the questions were improper, but that she would tactfully play along, which is what Matt was looking for. Brilliantly nuanced dialog.
