I don't think Full Metal Jacket was supposed to be anti-war. Kubrick himself said that he had already made an anti-war film (Paths Of Glory, his worst film by a mile imo) and with FMJ he just wanted to make a war film.

There's bright spots here and there, but the obsession with "cool moves," matches that are 45 minute Greek tragedies that have 8000 false finishes and ascended fanboys being the face of the business rather than believable tough guys makes it tough for me to watch in 2022. It doesn't help that wrestling fans nowadays are the same sort of middlebrow types that like Star Wars and comic books along with all the baggage that entails.
