Here’s a Patreon exclusive video for September 2024. Join me as I run some errands while reminiscing over the vagaries of the past few weeks.

An audio only version of this is available in a separate post.

Many thanks for joining up, it’s very much appreciated. I think if I was making a proper video I’d have double checked before speaking, because I’m familiar with both terms, but off the cuff I have far fewer words available to me in the quick access buffer. You’ll have to forgive any factual errors in the oddcasts, because without them, there’s very little left.

Techmoan

After seeing your return to YouTube post-illness, I thought that the best way to send my well wishes was to join your Patreon, rather than have any message lost in a sea of YT graffiti. I've now been binging these Oddcasts - which I absolutely love - over the past couple of days and feel I need to ask: do you come with a health warning? Is there a lethal dose or potential of toxic build-up by overdoing it? I'll risk it, though. Anyway, I chose this video to make my first comment on as I actually have something to contribute: the type of input you describe in the Bose WavePod isn't a potentiometer, but a rotary encoder. You may or may not know this, but if not, now you do - it's always nice to know the right words to describe a thing, at least for me. Hope your recovery continues well.

Concerning the air conditioner: I got fed up with using the window for the exhaust. So I got a builder in to drill a big hole into the wall and mount a conduit that has a flap mechanism on the outside, so no air can come in. Got this in two rooms now. There are also flat exhaust tubings availalble. They are not flexible though and come in shapes that should suit your corner. I made my experience in Germany though, but it should not be much different from the UK.

Holger P Kleinert

Yes more food reviews please 👌🏼

Andrew Bednarz

Thanks and if you like the dodgy instant food reviews stay tuned for an update. As for the digital mirrors I believe they aren’t legal in the US at present. Fortunately the Cybertruck isn’t legal in the UK, so this is a rare automotive win. Although I doubt many car companies will try the digital mirrors again in the short term given the added cost. I like them though.

Techmoan

Wanted to throw my vote in for continuing the food reviews as well. If nothing else, it gives us americans a view at other cultures, especially the canned and bagged meals. They're really not something I've run across here and I too always struggle with finding a satisfying lunch that isn't mundane. Also appreciated the video portion of you driving in your car, gave me a chance to see the digital rearview and sideview mirrors which also aren't really a thing in the US.

Stephen Gozza

The Osmo Pocket 3 head tracking can be a bit over enthusiastic at times - so it’s best used sparingly. The problem is that it tries to keep the head at absolute dead centre of the image - so the tiniest movement of a person, makes the camera move a bit as well. If a real cameraman was shooting the scene, he’d only track the presenter if they started to move completely out of frame. I think they could tame it down a bit with a firmware update, so hopefully they’ll do that at some point.

Techmoan

Another message from me. I quite like this video tracking thingy you got going now, actually does a good job of a hand held feel, which I prefer to static. Great job, Matt. Lee

Lee Coles

Ahhhh love me Techmoan updates. Sitting eating a Birds sausage cob with stuffing and apple sauce, sipping a volcanic cappuccino on a country lane with 5G. Couldn’t get better than this 🤣 Bose stuff is definitely not crap. It’s just not for everyone. Also, like all tech and indeed all EVERYTHING… goes wrong from time to time. Cheers Lee

I watched till the end! I do find the oddcasts really good. The studio looks so much bigger in the regular video's. But that's what i said when i visited the BBC in the 1990's I think it was you that showed the digital "matte painting" that was used on the bbc news back then:) Its the behind the scenes, the what went wrong and the food reviews that i like in these. But do what you think works for the masses with these.

Steve Whitcher

I enjoy the food 'reviews' lol, so one of the few. I also bought a portable air con maybe 2 years ago, whenever the summer was last stifling. Does take up a lot of room, also didn't anticipate the pipe needing so much space. Had to put the same frock thing on the window and can't use it when I sleep because it gives me a jolt when the compressor starts up again. Not needed it this year, but I am glad I bought it, as it does a bloomin' amazing job of getting the temperature down quick. I know Americans etc say they are inefficient and a waste of money, and you need to get the window ones or the fixed ones. But, like you stated, our house doesn't have sash windows and was designed to very much keep the cold out, and heat in, which can make it a sweat box if the weather does creep up. I think the Bose hate brigade sound like the Apple/Samsung brand haters. No actual valid arguments, just irrational hatred of the brand. Besides the phones being pretty darned similar, if you buy the one they don't like, you are a 'sheep' or an idiot. The reason I have an Apple phone is I am lazy, I have had one for a long time now, I know how to use it, and it's easy to transfer data when you 'upgrade' (which I rarely do these days). Just watched the VCF Mid-West YouTuber Discussion panel where David Murray/8Bit Guy says he gets abuse for having an iPhone...

Dungeoneer

It really all depends on what part of the month I record the clips. If only I’d started wearing a wig in my early 20s, I’d never have aged a day.

Techmoan

You have Phil Murphy hair now (the Governor of New Jersey, who had a buzz-cut for a long time, then decided to let his hair grow).

VWestlife

Hedgehogs love mealworms but apparently they can cause metabolic bone disease, the same problem is also caused when they eat sunflower seeds, anything high in phosphorous.

Robin Cooper

Love the food reviews and frankly most of your content especially old audio equipment

AzoriusMage

Thanks for the update, 'Beat' Techmo-shi! 😊

Craig Lemon

I also got a Delonghi Penguino type AC unit last year, I used it for about 4 weeks last year and about the same time this year, but I can be jealous at daytime temperatures under 25°C and 10-15°C in the night! I bought the unit after being a couple of weeks out of sleep because the temperature wouldn't drop under 20°C at night here in Switzerland... It's still just a couple of weeks a year, but will probably get more over time I'm afraid. I moved it around between my bedroom and the living room, I lived in an apartment without stairs, so the casters come in handy. This year, it was mostly the moisture that was bad in summer, the unit produced a couple of buckets of water every day! Let's see how my new apartment (Minergie with "comfort ventilation") will be in summer... I'll keep the unit ready, at least to cool the bedroom when needed! By the way: funny to see that the windows open to the outside in Britain, here in Switzerland, they usually open to the inside, as I also remember from the Netherlands.

MrHammond

We sure can't have all these silver foxes running rampant. (ignore me 😋)

Grace Robbins

I was concerned the food might turn my hair grey. That would be terrible.

Techmoan

Have to say i've always been impressed with the sound quality of any bose equiptment i've ever had, aways seems simple to use and set to a nice balance of bass and treble. I think regarding the Japaneese chap, well he'd obviously not sold enough noodles between making adds to afford his regular hair dye 😄

Tim Barker

That would be very kind, but please don’t go out of your way, I’ve got enough stocks to last for many months to come.

Techmoan

From what I heard at the time this was the last time that Bar Harbor was on the itinerary - like so many similarly cruise ship swamped places…and justifiably so. It was a memorable visit though so I’m glad I got to see it while I could.

Techmoan

There were indeed a lot of new Nissin varieties this year, so many I even missed the rice based ones you featured here! You might get to experience a "few" of these before Halloween ;)

Chris Browne

I'd forgotten you took a cruise that include Bar Harbor Maine. I know its a bit of a "tourist trap" kind of destination but I've spent hundreds of days and nights on the island and do have some fond memories. I hope you enjoyed it.

Peter Rogers

I'm a non-driver, and have never sat in an "American" car, so as a passenger, it would feel really disorientating to sit where (to me) the driver sits!

Brad Jones

My tongue-in-cheek assessment of the "bad hair day" segment, complete with t-shirt.

pghcoyote

@evilution - I think you and I have the same affinity to the cold. 🩵

Grace Robbins

Yeah, mine does heating too. That's why I only paid 5% VAT on the installation as it's an "essential". If it wasn't for the girlfriend, I'd rarely have any heating on, just enough to not die and the pipes to freeze. It's amazing how friendly the cat is when the house is cold.

evilution

Some split ACs can operate in reverse for heating while giving Heat Pump efficiencies. Saving money on heating is very topical here in the U.K.

Duncan

I think it might be true, that you have different audiences according to the different areas of interest. At least that how it is for me. However I ended up watching many, if not all and nowadays every video because you're just good at it and it is nice.

Raul Ramos

Everything is better with a cat! Enjoy!

Bas van Schooten

Nice! I like somebody actually driving a Honda E. I really like it, still.. And it's still amusing how someone who can't taste anything reviews food 😂 But as I can't eat it because of allergies, it's nice to see somebody enjoying them.. I also liked the boombox video a lot, since I was contemplating fixing one myself. But eh, I don't think I will 😄 I looked at a similar airco unit as well (it gets a little hotter a little more often in the Netherlands), but i didn't for exactly three same reason: the windows.. With electricity being at least twice the price of the US and indeed the need to drill holes into the walls I decided not to bother.. Then again, I don't make videos and I understand why you did.. 😄

Bas van Schooten

'sloppy weekend guy' ? 🙂‍↔️❤️‍🔥

Grace Robbins

Thanks for the food review! 😃👍

marcel malfregeot

I like the convenience food tests, they are brilliant. Thanks for putting this one in by the end, I was waiting for one to come.

Don J

I hate cup noddles but for some reason I enjoy watching you review them and other instant meals.

Kristopher Baity

Feel your pain re: the AC unit, I had the same struggle up stairs with one in the middle of the heatwave of 2020 so our 9-month old daughter wouldn't be sleeping in a room that was 30+ degrees c (south facing, on sunny days impossible to stop it becoming an oven, even with tailored heat-reflective blinds). Re: the window solution, I tried the flexible kit but it didn't work very well I found - I ended up investing in one of these from eBay: https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/132726549898 Sure it could be done DIY too, I just didn't have the time (or tools/skills) and we needed something asap. Can recommend the idea, much neater than anything else I found after much research.

Gareth P

air conditioning for british houses: The cooling might not be essential but most British houses have some kind of heating and a split heat pump which can heat the room in the winter and blow cool dry air in the summer would be ideal (mine has a hole about 5cm across drilled through the wall for the pipes). But Brits are too familiar with their gas boilers and heating the house for just a few hours a day to move to heat pumps yet... give it another 50 years.

Richard Bevan

You want the window seal kit with the drawstring not the zip, just FYI. They work a lot better.

Kirk Northrop

Great looking little shed, but My God! The number of screws in that thing!- Hope you don't need to use the ac much. If you do it probably means it's even hotter here in the states.- I don't know why... but love the food videos. Never feel you need to stop doing them for viewer's sake.

Andrew Shaw

The hedgehog is the Robillard house patronus.

Arthur Robillard

Love your Honda E! Would be interested to know your thoughts on it. I know you historically made videos on your previously owned cars, which I enjoyed from an owner’s perspective.

AG

Matt, I have simple needs: Show me food videos and show me Bee Knees! I'm on a restrictive diet, (damn you type 2 diabetes), but I was just approved to adopt a rescue cat. I'm stoked! I'm going to see if the pro cups are available in the states. Thanks for all you do to keep an old man entertained.

CrimsonPig808

Nice canada magnet, Hi from montreal !

Julien fortin

I genuinely look forward to the food bits. I really enjoy seeking out unique convenience foods like I’m a journalist for Microwave Times. It seems to be a common co-morbidity for people into odd gadgets and novel recording/playback devices.

Patrick Joseph

I'm one of the people who likes seeing the food reviews. Thanks for the update and the view of the neighborhood (sorry, no "u"). Who was that sloppy weekend guy, and what has he done with Techmoan? :) Keep on doing what you're doing and what you find interesting. I'm certain that most of your Patreon subscribers share my sentiment that anything you present (apart from the prostate exam) is of interest coming from you.

pghcoyote

The same reason the left side of the road is 'right.' 😘

Grace Robbins

Why is the car video mirror-image? ;)

Billy Kaye

I've used the term'classic Techmoan' here one or twice, but I should clarify that I like pretty much anything you reckon is worth a video.

Andrew Torrance

Ohh yeaahhh, take it all off 😁

Simon Arnold

Yes so far it’s been working fine - I only get to use it a few times a year.

Techmoan

Nice odd-cast :) More dynamic this way, the overall presentation keeps getting better 👍

Jasper Colijn

Watching the noodles that aren't noodles.

Earl Plotner

I have two of those and both work great.

Earl Plotner

I take these food segments for what they are: A bit of fun and light-hearted entertainment. I've never perceived them as nutritional advice. There's no question that high-fibre, minimally processed and environmentally friendly harvested foods are preferable, but someone gnawing on a carrot while listing its nutritional values is not what I would consider exciting to watch.

Tunix

I think you have the same Black + Decker cordless strimmer as me? I'm quite impressed with mine.

Alan Lee

Unfortunately most things I buy aren’t really sellable, there’s usually something a bit unusual about them making them unsuitable for eBay. So the ones that still work are all stacking up in the locker.

Techmoan

You mention the steep cost of the Bose unit. I understand that in this case you’re still happily using it which is great. But otherwise, do you sometimes tend to sell off any equipment or is it too much of a hassle and do all things end up in the great Techmoan storage locker? For me I tend to collect audio equipment and I also sometimes sell some stuff on after I used it for a while. My significant other had some limit of stuff she tolerates which threshold I sometimes cross and also it helps bring a little money in (which I then typically spend on new equipment or music)

Michiel Beijen

Noodles are pretty bad all round. They tend to have a very high amount of salt. They're effectively nutritionally empty, too, outside of carbs, the aforementioned salt, and oil. But perhaps the worst part is they're usually made with palm oil, and that's a huge environmental issue. Forests are being cleared to make way for palm oil growing and this is wiping out engendered species and killing off orangutans, too: see https://orangutan.org/palmoil/ and https://www.worldwildlife.org/industries/palm-oil

Keir Thomas-Bryant

The price the original Apple I was sold for.

Keir Thomas-Bryant

I have a Midea dehumidifier with pump that I am very happy with.

Rick McCauley

That very real hair is almost as convincing on you as it is on the Japanese gentleman.

David Peaker

😈🤔

Alec

Please don't do a podcast while driving a car.

Roger Thomas

It was something like £640-odd plus postage, so just a coincidence. Or was it…

Techmoan

Dan & Grace: I'm a bit further north on the Mississippi than both of you at Saint Cloud, MN.

Mark Hesse

Of course I had to look up the BSOD at the end. It's a crashed Soundblaster driver. Probably would have qualified as a jump scare in the olden Win9x days.

Tunix

I'll say that I do like the food reviews. I'm usually interested to learn something new, however trivial it might be. Those "Professional" noodles seem interesting--not that I would want to buy them in bulk, but if they show up in the grocery stores I'll give them a try. Last June I got a Midea brand portable A/C unit for the bedroom of my Mom's apartment. It's similar to yours in size and keeps the bedroom quite cool and is very quiet so sleeping with it running isn't a problem. Did cost more the twice what yours did, so I think you got a good deal.

Mark Hesse

I agree - that's a very odd price to pick.

Big Car

Yeah, I'll be the first to admit I'm not a fan of the food segments, but I really feel there's an opportunity to put those on a separate channel. Say there's a new thing in the supermarket in the UK, like you've featured before. You can do a quick video talking about it, because everyone in the UK sees it as a new thing. Then there's items like the one you showed today - you could provide a link to buy it in the description. You have an infectious way you present videos that makes people want to watch, and so this could be something that would get a following. And what's to lose? Like your early videos, put it up, see if people like it, and if not then don't do any more. You're already recording them for Patrons, and they don't require much work.

Big Car

I have to say I’m almost disappointed it’s doesn’t stand for Professional noodles.

Amro

No jump scares? The last frame had me jumping!😉

Mark Hesse

Mat shilling instant food again. Yum!! (Hopefully)

Kris Graney

I've had a few different "portable" AC units over the last 20 years. I am always hot. In winter I'm wearing shorts and a t-shirt. 7 years ago when I moved into my current house, one of the 1st thing I did was have a proper split AC system fitted. Working nights means sleeping days and that's impossible when it's hot. The actual chiller is outside on the wall and the interior units sit high up the wall, well out the way. I couldn't live without it.

evilution

I actually think you made a very tidy job of that temporary AC installation, function over form etc!

Jonathan Brock

@Mat, I was listening to the video on Bluetooth and not watching the video. I'll do that when I get back home later this evening. Enjoyable, but the blue screen of death error beep at the end gave me a bit of a scare. 😉 'Til next time, take care 🤍

Grace Robbins

@Dan - I'm well North of you - stopped at the Quad Cities and now I'm currently in Clinton, Iowa.

Grace Robbins

Mississippi River? Where abouts? I live in eastern Missouri not far from the Mississippi.

Dan Weiss

It cost £666... You sure the seller wasn't Mr Lu Cifer

Alec

There are no jump scares in this one so you should be fine, but be sure to keep your concentration on the road… unless you’re on a train, then look wherever you want, unless you’re driving it.

Techmoan

Just started watching; to your horror I am hiding in the vehicle with you as you're driving 😁 This is a perfect thing for me to listen to while I travel alongside the Mississippi River.
