Panasonic Boombox Review
Added 2020-08-28 16:48:12 +0000 UTCMy last review of a Portable Stereo Radio Cassette CD MP3 Player (aka Boombox) has proven to be surprisingly popular.
Perhaps there really are some people out there who want to play their old cassettes after all ;-)
This is an opportune follow up, in which I take a look at the most requested ‘new‘ model that I’d yet to try, the Panasonic RX-D55.
I’ve not been mentally or physically firing on all cylinders this week - so please excuse the rather slapdash nature of some sections of this video, it’s the best I could do under the circumstances.
Hopefully by the time I start on the next video I’ll be feeling a bit more chipper, as I’m planning on showcasing some retro Karaoke tech.

An alkaline LR16 has an advertised capacity of around 7500mAh - that's 7.5AH - times 12V gives 90 Watt-hours (since watts=volts x amps). If it runs for 3.2 hours, the average power consumption is 90 divided by 3.2 or approximately 28W. Assuming the tape/radio/USB decoder circuitry consumes 4W, that leaves 24W between the 2 speaker amplifiers or 12W a channel. Allowing for losses in the amplifiers, this gives an audio output of maybe 8W per channel at high volume - which explains why it sounds so good. It all seems to tally with the spec sheet. Makes you appreciate the amazing charge density of lithium batteries though..
