The Master Tape

Here's something a bit unusual - if you've been following me on Twitter, you'll already know a bit of the story behind this. What started off as an old tape of advert jingles bought from eBay - ended up expanding out into pop culture history.

You'll get to see this an hour or so before everyone else, while I'm working on the annotations and links and waiting for youtube to process the 4K version.

I hope you enjoy it. I did find it difficult to have something to show on screen for a video that is essentially all about an audio tape, so I'm hoping this one maintains some interest for the viewer as well as the listener.

You'll have noticed I finally have an updated intro, it's in 4K too and whilst it's not perfect, that's what I wanted .I like the shoddy wobbly imperfection of the thing - anyone can type a title into a video editing package...but to do something like this takes a day of messing about in the garage and a lot of muttering.

When I get a chance I'll show how it was put together....and how I've already got plans for an improved intro using some new tech I've ordered.

I also have another one that I haven't listened to. I plan to record it from a 2 track 15ips machine that I haven't set up yet. I don't know if I'll do a full video, but I may do something just for Patreon.

If you listen, it seems to me as though the singer is even trying to sound like Bing , so he may be more difficult to recognise. It's probably some session man. The only possible well-known name of the time that jumped out at me was Michael Holiday - https://youtu.be/Gzk0bdlDr3Y but he died in 1963! Oh well . . .

I picked up some DATs recently containing audio book masters read by some very famous people...but for some reason they aren't as interesting to me because once things go digital, the files can be duplicated and stored in multiple places without any loss in quality.

I wonder who the singer was for the co-op ad. I was expecting someone to say - hey that's ... but so far no one's recognised the voice.

That 'Co-op Pilot' is a direct cheat from the 'Bing Sings Shell' British TV commercial from the early sixties... https://youtu.be/Huqs7c3vW1c Have a listen. Even the tune is very similar! (I'm in marketing. :)

Funny you should find a master tape. I actually just recently picked up a mastering CD that someone found in a storage locker near Los Angeles.

Steven Reich

An excellent video as always.

I find audacity incredibly unfriendly.. I'm really not good with this stuff, but I'll remember this for next time. Thanks.

Michael Turner-Craig

you should be able to find someone to dub that for you...it sounds like it will be worth the effort.

very cool

The new 4K intro is great, giggling at the shake of tape machine (should have taken it to get it balanced at the local garage πŸ˜‰) love it.

So amazing. I have an ex Radio Station tape from the Netherlands apparently of a Beatles radio show but can't play it back. I have equipment to play 7.5ips and 7in reels but nothing to handle 10.5" reels... :-( Keep up the amazing work you do. The Midlands Retro Museum x
