today we're diving into the 4th Tarantino movie thus far - Kill Bill: Volume 1!

Comments

wow wow, so many fun details in this movie!

camilla

that's very interesting! Tarantino seems to be one of the biggest film buffs of them all, always giving reference to something

camilla

that makes sense with the inspiration for the blood sprays! I haven't seen anything from that genre so wouldn't have gotten the reference ha

camilla

I'm excited for volume 2!!

Awesome reaction to a great movie. Kill Bill was inspired by exploitation films that played in cheap US theaters in the 1970s, including martial arts films, samurai cinema, blaxploitation films and spaghetti westerns. It pays homage to the Shaw Brothers Studio, known for its martial arts films, with the inclusion of the ShawScope logo in the opening titles and the "crashing zoom", a fast zoom usually ending in a close-up commonly used in Shaw Brothers films. The animated sequence pays homage to the anime ultraviolence shown in Golgo 13: The Professional (1983) as well as the urban gothic elements of Wicked City (1987). The shot where the Bride splits a baseball in two with a samurai sword was done for real on the set. It was done by Zoë Bell, Uma Thurman's stunt double. The Bride's yellow outfit was inspired by the costume worn by Bruce Lee in his final film, Game of Death (1978). The black-and-white photography in the Crazy 88 fight scene is known as a homage to '70s and '80s U.S. television airings of kung fu movies. Black and white (as well as black and red) was used to conceal the shedding of blood from television censors. Originally, no black-and-white photographic effects were going to be used (and in the Japanese version, none are), but the MPAA demanded measures be taken to tone the scene down. Tarantino used the old trick for its intended purpose as well as an homage. Kill Bill: Vol. 1 - Battle Without Honor or Humanity - Tomoyasu Hotei https://youtu.be/okR1sOM4jI8

Volume 2 is chefs kiss he counts volumes as one film with part 1 being a samurai action and 2 more like a revenge western.

I really liked Kill Bill Volume 1. I thought the restaurant fight scene went on way to long, but it was interesting. I was told that the spaying blood was inspired by old Japanese movies like 47 Ronin (1941) etc. I used to like old Japanese TV shows like Zatoichi. It had some of that too. I was also told that the yellow jump suit, the bride wore, was inspired by Bruce Lee 's "Enter the Dragon" (1973). I was not aware of the foot fetish thing. I am going to have to go back and watch some of Quentin Tarantino's previous work. Enjoyed your reactions! :-)

In all of his films, Tarantino unapologetically pays homage to the masters. The exaggerated blood spray can be traced back to one of the greatest Directors of all time, Akira Kurosawa. In Sanjuro (1962), the rig to show blood during a Samurai fight released too much pressure, and the blood sprayed comically high. But since every actor knew that Akira Kurosawa didn't make mistakes, they all stayed in character and didn't ruin the take. Akira liked the result, so that moment remained in the film... changed film history... and that's why you still see this effect used today. I simply thought you might like to know the origin, and the link to that "mistake" is below. https://youtu.be/UkkF6Zz67TE

Yes. This is my favourite, I have been looking forward to this.
