Parrot Nutrition Talk for ZAA

Hey patrons,

So this is the latest version of my Parrot Nutrition talk I've created specifically for the ZAA audience which is a zoo based audience. I give the presentation on the 17th so it's really coming up and I appreciated all of you so much who showed up to watch my talk live, and gave me awesome feedback to create THIS version of my presentation. There's still time, so if you see or notice something that needs to be addressed let me know. I tried to incorporate all the things mentioned in the live version to make this one.

I also timed it since I only have about 30 minutes to talk, and 15 for Q&A afterwards.

Thanks again for supporting me and letting me practice on all of you!

I give my babies, cockatiels, finches a conure and a lovebird the seasonal in the morning and then my homemade seed mixture from the books I purchased from Birdtricks. What time should I give the seed mix?

Michele Hambach

I am sprouting Pea shoots for my flock of 10.

You did an awesome job on this and you’ve gotten some amazing feedback! My main thought was too much text on a few slides. Some other people mentioned it and offered brilliant solutions. You speak so naturally and passionately about this topic that when you read the words it takes away some of the impact. You came alive during the presentation and it was very engaging. On a personal level- I didn’t realize how important spouting was. We do freeze dried, pellets and I try to make 1 thing from your book each weekend. Now I’ll add sprouting to the mix! Very informative and I have every confidence that you’ll rock the presentation!

Well-said, it was very interesting and it kept me very informed. Bravo !

Theresa

Thanks, Tony! I added more on foraging especially.

BirdTricks

Love that wording! Thank you!

BirdTricks

Thank you both! I will work on breaking up those slides before I give this talk!

BirdTricks

I will definitely do this, thank you for the links!

BirdTricks

That makes sense! I think maybe just spelling that out explicitly, and maybe mentioning just starting by incorporating fresh food is a great start, but if they want a more comprehensive recipe you're happy to give that to them. :)

Chelsea Lang

I had that in originally but then worried that if they felt they had to follow an exact recipe they'd get a little discouraged vs just convincing them to start introducing fresh food in general. But let me rethink about how to incorporate it in a way that wouldn't come off overwhelming... like maybe just basic ratios.

BirdTricks

It's so hard to pick and choose what to dive into with only 30 minutes! I'm going to think on this a bit though.

BirdTricks

Thank you!

BirdTricks

This is really well done. My main feedback is that you do a great job answering the question “what should a parrot eat”. I would encourage you to consider also addressing, even briefly, the questions of “how much should a parrot eat?” And “how should a parrot eat?” As opportunities to encourage portion control and foraging opportunities.

Tony

I love the way that you talk about you learn throughout the process and that everything is changing so it is important to understand that we are trying to learn each day. So today I can have a new complete parrot diet

Jamie, you are a gifted speaker and your talk is fantastic! I agree with Meg's comments. I also liked how you shared a little about yourself at the beginning and then shared your contact information on the last slide that will stay on the screen. Jeff and I have two minor suggestions for you to consider. 1. We thought the following three slides had too much text on them and the text was too small, making them difficult to read. * So What Did I Change? * How We Look at the Parrot Diet * How to Make This Work In Conjunction With Affordability We weren't sure if your talk is virtual or in person? It's generally best to keep the font size fairly big. If you are presenting to a whole room full of people, you won't know ahead of time if the projector is decently sized (or in focus)! Even if your talk is virtual, our suggestion would be to use a bigger font and either split the slides into a series of slides or reduce the amount of text on them. In particular, "How to Make This Work In Conjunction With Affordability", could easily be broken up into four slides. This shouldn't add any time to your presentation as you'll likely go through each slide faster if there's less of a wall of text on each slide. 2. A very common practice in conference-style talks is that the slides are numbered so people can refer to slides by number if they have questions. The slides can be numbered in the lower-left or lower-right (and most slide-making software will have a feature to automatically do this for you). While we don't know if putting the slide number is the practice at the conference you're going to be presenting at, it is a little thing that might help you connect better with your audience. Again, thank you for the opportunity to see your talk. We really enjoyed it and hope the conference attendees do as well. 🥰 J and Jeff

Awesome talk! I'm sure it will resonate well with your audience. The only suggestions I have is what several others already gave. It would be helpful to backup any nutrition and disease claims with scientific studies or other references where possible. You can footnote a URL to the reference at the bottom of the slide. Great job, Jamie! I've been following BirdTricks since the beginning. Your growing impact on parrot care and nutrition has been so inspiring!

Hi Jamieleigh, The presentation is outstanding. Given your audience I would suggest you add a reference or two that they can read for more information, including your own cookbooks. Also while you are correct about fruits being only water and sugar you might mention that “Fruit is a necessary part of the diet for some psittacine species such as eclectus and lories, but these are exceptions”. Here is a good article to give them as a reference: https://www.sciencedirect.com/science/article/abs/pii/S1094919414000346?via%3Dihub You might also refer to some of the specifics in this article of how seeds alone are deficient of some essential nutrients, etc. Another great reference: https://www.aav.org/global_engine/download.aspx?fileid=A14FC433-AF64-491F-A97D-6855AAD52AA4&ext=pdf Good luck, it should be great. This was a great talk! I think the only thing I was curious about, or would be curious about if I were working at a zoo is 'what's the actual recipe to follow?' I don't think I missed it, but maybe giving a line about exactly what balance of ingredients you should be feeding (so they aren't just giving 'chop') or how they can get that recipe from you after the talk would be helpful. :)

Chelsea Lang

I think it sounded great. I hope it can make an impact for parrots in zoos.

Wendy Cottingham

I missed the first one, but really enjoyed this one. I did, however, expect more stats about what corn/sugar does to bird livers to create fatty liver and other ailments and how y'all came up with your solution. Your solution is unique. You touch on that with noting the seasonal feeding aspect of it and that's awesome! I love your pellets and your SFS and an on a monthly delivery schedule from y'all. LOL. Just want to make sure everyone knows I'm not just being difficult. 😉

Kelly Sanchez

I thought it was great, as is. Watched the whole thing. You talked about what you were going to tell them, you gave them the examples (and bullet points) for what you told them, then you summarized what you'd just told them. Can't get better than that.

Meg Geddes

Looks amazing I love all the adds. I feel that it not only helps make you another contact but also you showed some of the places to find your videos and I love that.

FayK

Great talk! I missed the first one but this looks great! Straight to the point, lot of info, personable….. you will rock it! More people need to watch this!!!

Geneviève Bénard

At 11:19 you said “we think the best parrot diet…”, I feel like it should be “we know”. You have the evidence of your flock thriving on your system and you know for a fact that it’s the healthiest.
