I don't know if you caught it, but that school that Aomine beat so badly in the flashback is the one he was counting on to challenge him. He was hoping for someone named Inoue from Kamizaki to challenge him, and instead that was the guy that gave up and said "Just play by yourself." That's why Aomine gave up, even the guy who was supposed to be some kind of competition just quit on him.
