Weird problems occur with my PC #part1 (really long)
Added 2021-11-14 18:39:25 +0000 UTCHi, everyone! GaiNoob here and want to say hi(tbh, I just want to talk it out)
#Warning! This post will be quite long and involve with a problem with my PC that I can't figure the cause why it happened)
If you don't want to read something like a long essay with poor gramma please skip this post
But if you don't mind it then please continue and if possible your opinions or advice to figure it out because everything I written down is from real story that happen in these past few days....
--------------------------------------------------
Ok, if you reading this line then that mean you're ready
So if you're my subscribers since last year you might know that I build my own PC for the first time(I post the picture of my first build PC here too)
And about the spec:
- cpu : AMD Ryzen 5 3600x
- ram : DDR4 Corsair rgb vengeance pro 8GB x 4 (Native ram for Ryzen)
- M/B : Asus Tuf gaming b550m (plus wifi)
- GPU : Geforce 1650ti
- PSU : Corsair CX750M bronze
- UPS : Zircon hybrid iBox
Everything seem to be fine until few days ago, In the morning my PC can't turn on(complete silent when press power button, no fan spinning but there's a light indicate on GPU) I thought because of dust that accumulated in the tower so I dissemble everything and clean it with soft brush and blower as suggested in Youtube
After reassemble, it can turn on without any issue so I thought I hit the mark
But next morning it went silent again so I repeat the same step to clean it but this time it didn't work, I recheck wiring to see if I miss something but didn't! Or check that I forgot to flip psu button or not
But it didn't work this time...
*Note : These pass few days there's a heavy storm in my town(I guess humidity level quite high because my PC room don't have air conditioner)
I tried figure it out by checking step by step from video on Youtube
- First : I check PSU by use a paper clip insert in socket, PSU running and tower fan spinning so I think my PSU is not the cause
- Second : I try to jumpstart by touching power pin on motherboard with screwdriver, It didn't work so I assume that motherboard is a problem
You may think "Ok! You found the cause so case close, just claim it if your board has a warranty if not then buy a new one"
...
...
Yes,I thought so too....
I brought M/B to the shop nearby to claim it...And yeah! The funny&weird part start now...
Technician told me that my M/B is fine everything work and even let me walk into the repair section to see it
Yup! IT WORK!? HOW???
they connect my M/B(I brought it with my CPU & Ram install) with their PSU & GPU and test by jumpstart, It work?!
It can turn on and start up Windows with no issue...
I ask him to shutdown and restart it again....and result is the same, everything start smoothly as silk.
I brought M/B back to my house with joy and try connect it with PSU outside the tower before put it back in to see if it could run or not
IT'S WORK!
I'm really happy and put everything back and press the power button....
It goes silent.........
I recheck wiring and PSU button if I miss something but NOT!
Everything seem to be in place but WHY IT WON'T TURN ON?
I bring M/B out again and try turn it on as I did before but this time is completely silent
WHY? HOW? ...
A moment ago it can turn on and why it won't now?
I hurried bring everything with me to the shop again this time and technician start checking it as I did before
He check PSU and it work then he check by jumpstart my PC and IT WORK....!? (But I just told you that I tried jumpstart it but it didn't work,Right?)
So he assume that my power button is the cause and change it, after that he press the new button and my PC turn on without any problem
Yup! Case close......
NO! IT'S NOT!
After that I take my PC back home, connect power line and press the switch to turn it on
Only silent linger in the room....
No sound, No fan spin, completely silent again....
At this moment I start to think from logical to something....Umm, Mystery
Or if you want me to explain, I start to think that 'Did some ghost play a prank on me?'
Why I can't turn it on at my house but no problems at the shop, It doesn't make any sense at all!
I got a phone number of said technician so I try call him to take a look at my house,he agree to come
And after come he check it, yup! It didn't work....only when it's in my own house my PC didn't work so he assume that my M/B is broken now due to a shock cause by voltage leakage inside my tower or some part of fan wire or tower metal object touch with M/B that cause circuit shock
Why he concluded that way,you ask?
Because he accidentally touch the tower and jolt, yup! In Thailand we don't wear a shoe when enter your own or someone else house we leave it at the entrance or shoe rack so if your house don't have ground line your PC can electrocuted you if you touch it
*Note : my house is quite old and build before there's an announcement of grounding line standard, so my house don't have any ground line to prevent electric leakage
He suggested that I should plug pc with electric outlet that has ground line or at least make a DIY ground line connect directly to my PC
So next day I make a DIY ground line for my PC and try to test it again in hope that it will turn on
...But It won't
At this point I bring my PC to the shop again for last time and decide to let them check before claim M/B and buy a new one and of course...a new bigger tower
I ask them to move all part from old tower to the new one and try turn it on by a whim(I already paid for this new tower then why won't I try it once,I thought)
A miracle happen, it's turn on! No new part but just new tower!
All the employee in the shop who mobbing around my PC let out a loud laugh and seem like every problems up until now due to the old tower
Case close! Everyone seem to happy, I only paid for just a new tower not new M/B nor new PSU
I bring it back home with 50/50 feeling in my mind because I won't feel certain until I turn it on at my house
I plug the power and open it.....
It turn on, smoothly as alway
I check all the file in hdd if there's any corrupted but not found any issue, I decide to shutdown it one and wait for a few hours then turn it on again
No problems! My PC start running and then I continue my work until midnight and shutdown
Me who didn't have a good night sleep for three day straight sleep like a log and wake up in this morning with the same nightmare
...My PC goes silent again
Right now I decide to order a new M/B and PSU just in case, Will test it if my pc can turn on with new part or not...all I can do is waiting, the day from now on until new board arrive seem too long for me now
I'll stop at this because it look really long(and might be the longest post in my life)
Everything above is not fiction but my real story in these pass few days, I typing all this in my phone and took me more than an hour
//I'm sorry for this inconvenience everyone but if you have any opinion or suggestions what might be the cause of this strange problems please let me know
Have a nice day everyone 😟

Sadly that yesterday I try to plug it with other outlets in my house too but didn't work😢
GaiNoob
2021-11-15 03:33:14 +0000 UTCTry another outlet if you can. Maybe it is just that one outlet. Since all the part work when tested at the store

2021-11-15 03:24:57 +0000 UTCRight now I tend to believe that the problem might be the wiring in the house but don't know why it choose to happen now PS. I'll buy APC UPS to replace it with the one I use too
GaiNoob
2021-11-15 03:08:16 +0000 UTCNo! Nothing bullshit, I appreciate all comments ☺️
GaiNoob
2021-11-15 03:00:55 +0000 UTCThank you, I'll definitely buy it☺️

2021-11-15 02:55:53 +0000 UTCThat was an up and down story. About half way though it my thought was a grounding issue. Maybe MB was shorting by making contact with the case? But I wonder if it may be the wiring in the house. If possible test using another outlet. A UPS is a good investment, but I don't know what might be available in Thailand. APC is a well known brand.

2021-11-15 00:15:30 +0000 UTCI read all things and here the helpers, and I can't say other thing that can helping sorry. Just some kinda bullshit like put under the pc something safe material, unplug it for nights when the weather is bad, the new power connecter with safety is done I guess and ups too

2021-11-14 23:13:52 +0000 UTCIf you're afraid of losing the files on your hard drive, I'd strongly suggest buying a backup hard drive.

2021-11-14 22:12:54 +0000 UTCI doubt the problem was the mouse you plugged in, but it would be worth seeing if one of the USB devices you are using could be the problem. Try trying to turn the pc on with just the monitor and see if anything happens. If it doesn't turn on then try resetting the BIOS as the technician did. In my case it was a pen display that had 2 USBs one going to the pc the other to a power adapter. The geniuses at XP-Pen made the power USB send voltage directly to my M/B USB. I was only able to power up the pc by totally disconnecting it from power for a few minutes and resetting the BIOS by shorting it with a screwdriver until eventually it never came back on again. I can't recommend an UPS as I don't know what brands are available in Thailand. Consider asking the technicians which one they would recommend.

2021-11-14 20:38:14 +0000 UTCOh! I didn't thought about ram before,Will test them And thank you for ups model, seem like APC is a reliable and trustworthy brand because everyone suggest it☺️

2021-11-14 20:33:57 +0000 UTCI understand your pain… having your pc broken and not knowing what the hell is wrong with it is the most stressful thing. And it only doubles with every day that passes (probably amplifies even more when your livelihood depends on it). I hope your problems go away once you replace the MB… but in case this fenomen continues... I suggest checking the RAM sticks. A lot of similar things you describe, can happen with a faulty stick. Try booting with only one stick and use it a little, if everything is ok, swap for the next stick and see if all 4 of them are performing ok As for an UPS (I see you asking in comments), I am using an APC BX1400U-GR that helped with a lot of power outages. I can easily exit and save any games or work stuff and shut down the PC when the power goes down. Lasted me for 3 years and a bit, before I had to change the UPS battery and I'm still using it, to this day.

2021-11-14 20:22:55 +0000 UTCOh! Thank you! I didn't do anything much with my PC except work and play some game(mostly Genshin right now) and no overclock so I think my pc didn't consume or use hi-wattage much

2021-11-14 19:59:26 +0000 UTCThank you! Luckily that I use wifi but my UPS seem to be a cheap one But you said that a usb in your M/B shorted out everything Do you have any recommend UPS? And recently I just connect an old mouse via usb port(I use wireless mouse&keyboard and it has usb receiver plugged in) is this possible that there's two mouse that use two usb port can be the cause?
GaiNoob
2021-11-14 19:54:09 +0000 UTCI'm not sure that my PSU has voltage adjustment or not but PSU that I use right now is Corsair CX750M
GaiNoob
2021-11-14 19:44:37 +0000 UTCI had a similar problem when a usb in my M/B shorted out everything exept the M/B survived. So probably when you change the PSU and M/B everything should work fine. I also recommend looking for a good brand UPS that has protection for the ethernet cable if you don't use wifi.

2021-11-14 19:37:58 +0000 UTCYeah, that UPS i bought needed to power a server for an hour. This might be more appropriate, depending on your PC wattage https://www.apc.com/shop/us/en/products/APC-Back-UPS-ES-650-VA-120VAC/P-BE650G1

2021-11-14 19:35:19 +0000 UTCOh! That's quite the price 😅 If I've to buy a new one my budget is around $100-200 because I already spent it with new M/B and PSU
GaiNoob
2021-11-14 19:33:39 +0000 UTCThat is quite the issue. I too thought it would be the power button. But it wasn’t. Do you have a voltage adjustment on the PSU? I know there’s a little red switch back there but that’s only for certain countries. Apart from that I can’t really think of anything. Maybe it’s a faulty PSU? And don’t worry about long posts! We’re here to support and help :D

2021-11-14 19:29:38 +0000 UTCNow, I will also say, I’ve only purchased these for my company, so this particular model is already more than I would use at home (Probably) https://www.apc.com/shop/us/en/products/APC-Smart-UPS-C-1440VA-120V-LCD-8x-NEMA-5-15R-outlets-Not-for-sale-in-CO-VT-or-WA-/P-SMC1500

2021-11-14 19:27:18 +0000 UTCCan you give me the model name? I'll check it if I can afford one😅
GaiNoob
2021-11-14 19:21:37 +0000 UTCThank you! I'll check it
GaiNoob
2021-11-14 19:15:59 +0000 UTCYes, he did it. A round looking battery and resetting bios by using screwdriver touching the pin
GaiNoob
2021-11-14 19:15:28 +0000 UTCJust in case, did the technician try changing the CMOS battery and resetting the bios?
east
2021-11-14 19:07:55 +0000 UTCI’ve one have some experience with APC UPS. Although, they’re probably very expensive in Thailand 😅
pengin senshi
2021-11-14 19:03:03 +0000 UTCSince you switched up the case this probably won't be a problem, but make sure there aren't any pins on the back of your mother board that have been exposed and are making contact with your case, of if there is a standoff that shouldn't be there. Ive heard of things happening like this that were almost impossible to track down and that was the cause.

2021-11-14 18:58:57 +0000 UTCDo you have any recommend UPS? I'd buy one to test it
GaiNoob
2021-11-14 18:58:50 +0000 UTCOr Is it possible that my PSU cause strange electric current to M/B
GaiNoob
2021-11-14 18:56:52 +0000 UTCI'm using UPS that claim to protect electric surge or electric shortage but the problem still occur Do you have any recommend UPS in this case?
GaiNoob
2021-11-14 18:54:17 +0000 UTCWow, that is quite the adventure! But I see you do use a UPS, so I'm surprised it would would still be electrical related since the UPS should be giving you the clean electricity. If anything, the UPS should break (unless it's not good quality...)
pengin senshi
2021-11-14 18:54:11 +0000 UTCHmmm.... It is a complicated and peculiar issue... Since your house has grounding issues, I suggest using a UPS to protect the PC from eventual surge. Also, there is the possibility that the motherboard is detecting issue in the current is receiving and triggering surge protection.
