[EARLY VIDEO] It's the very long 40,000 Q&A

Well this ended up being pretty much the same length as last year! I tried something a bit different for the accompanying footage this time, which turned out to be a lot more challenging to shoot than I expected. Hope you enjoy it!

Thanks for replying, I haven't traveled that line before and been on Sprinter once from Pakenham out East as I wanted to travel on a Sprinter as commonly travel on N sets back then, remember it being a little rough and noisy but only went out far enough that could catch something running back into Pakenham without waiting too long. Can't remember how far I went. When under 10 did catch a spark to the East of Pakenham, believe we went as far as the sparks went so would have been Warragal. Anyway, the Sprinter are a little short of 26m so 2 cars would be ~52m. Doubt there would be 3.5m between front of train and door so there would have to be something hanging without a platform. They have a 4x SP stopping at Heathcote Junction. The also stop 3VL's but the 2x 3VL don't stop which makes sense as if your on the wrong set you will be stuck on the train. I wonder if they only open a few doors when there is no platform. It may also be figuring out what operational flexibility each set if they have to disable doors and say the conductor ended up in the wrong set to block doors?? The 2x 3VL are peak Shep services. The stations between Seymour and Shep are over 150m. Wadong both platforms look to be about 110m and 2 X 3VL is in the timetable. If they only need one door over the platform with the second train then about 80m platform should be enough with 2x 3VL, maybe they would like 90-100m min. Good chat, learnt a lot. Now I'm wondering if we will get 2 X 3VL for the more peak service to W'Bool. The one they are running is a more off peak service.

They definitely allow over-length trains in normal service, the Up platform at Heathcote Junction is only about 45m long - just checking my photos, it doesn't even fit a 2 car Sprinter, the second door of the second car is off the end. It's possible they'd have a rule against introducing new cases of that though.

I've measured some of the platform wrong and in particular, Warrnambool. (Google Maps). It's possible on of the shortest. They have got rid of the goods shed and siding about 5-10 years ago and has open up to make it easier to extend that platform should they wish, use to run up against the East side of the planform IIRC. The VLocity like 75m each or 150m so doors would likely hang over the edge?? There is a bit of a noose and drivers cap hanging out the front would be a bit less. Maybe it's not not platform length then. As a kid living in Swan Hill area getting off at Eaglehawk we use to jump into the bushes from the train. I'm note sure if that policy has changed but they won't leave a platform if a single door wont lock these days, so something tells me full platform length is required with those policies, but you could be right. But do we need 6 car past Marshal? The Trains are worth money and that is about 5 hours to do the round trip back to Marshal. If drivers are the limitation this would not work but putting on more trains is preferable to larger ones. If we het into the Vline Corporate website is still looks like they are splitting trains at Ballarat to Arrarat on the 8181 & 8189. 07:53 or 18:00 from SCS. I haven't lived in Ballarat for 15 years or so, if you want some footage of them splitting trains they do it at the platform. If your unlucky, they will be running a single set on the day or the timetable is wrong. No way, I just noticed the Maryborough service links up with the Arrarat service. Arrarat arrives at 08.07, Maryborough arrives 08.04 and both depart at 08.19. Wish I still lived in Ballrat, to get to the Uni I walked through the station on the overpass and you to hang out on the bridge to see some of the action. Believe the AV in the timetable is when they join the trains but the hint in the timetable is the 8182 forms the 8172 which is continuing the Maryborough designation through to Melb. Looks like the DV is the timetable is breaking the set up. I should get out and see what they are running to Warrnabool but they only have Velocity for one run a weekday and not convenient. I can't cheat by looking up the network service plan as they haven't update for the VLocities but if they are may have to make a trip to Geelong one day to see if they are splitting the set. It's the 10.13 from SCS. If they are it may be the first time they split sets in the Geelong area at the station? Or at least while the train is still "on" and continuing further down. Could catch the reverse and see and extend the consist.

Yep, looks like the platform lengths are an issue - however for all the money they've spent on this it wouldn't have taken much to do a few short extensions. A 5 car N set is about 120m (with the advantage that the ACN only has a passenger door at the inner end, so the van end can hang off), while a 6 car VLocity is about 150m. The Warranmbool line platforms are all in the 120-140m range, except for Colac which is already 150m. I also don't think V/line actually has a policy against running over-length trains, they definitely allow cars to hang off the end of the platforms in some cases. But that might not be the public look they're after in this particular case.

Thanks for the video, The Warrnambool line stations are typically about 100m long and as such they would need to allows doors to open or lock them out that have no platform on either side. I live in Warrnambool and the 5 car N-Set fills the entire platform so however long that is, that is the length of the platform. What they will probably do is disconnect one of the set at either Geelong or Marshal. We already have one Vlocity per day but only on Week dats, they haven't updated their Network service plan on the Vline Corporate website and that train isn't something I've able to catch. The issues with the Vlocity possible can't be fixed, it's the hydrodynamic Voith drive sends vibration through the train and are so fragging depressing to be on for any Signiant portion. When the train return to Echuca decided to be one of the first, I wanted out it was so bad. Was better when I lived in Ballarat as it was about 1 hour. History of those drives comes from the 1930 in Germany but not sure people would like to link that period of Germanies history to the Vlocity but something similar worked a treat in fighter planes to control the superchargers.

Thanks for answering my questions Martin

Jed Smith

Yes I was a little bit shocked when I saw them all together like that too. Will certainly tick most of them off when I make the Frankston and/or Belgrave/Lilydale videos though!

Taitset

(also, the ambience of this video - especially the end - is very pleasant when it’s just above zero and there’s snow on the ground)

Max Johansson

Appreciate the very subtle clue provided as to the next line video, wonder if people will make the connection…

Max Johansson

Wow I'm actually shocked there's so many stations you've not stepped on yet. Im only missing two electric stations, being Croydon and Heathmont to go.

Dylan Shadowstar

Not excited at all!
