Time for another Q&A

[Edit: I'm going to record this on Friday 15/11, so if you haven't put in a question yet, make sure you get it to me by Thursday!] Hi everyone! It's exactly a year today since I released my last Q&A video, and as some of you may have noticed, the channel recently ticked over 40,000 subscribers (twice the number this time last year), so I thought it's probably time to do another one! I expect I'll probably get more questions than I can answer this time on the public post, but I will certainly endeavor to answer every question that gets asked here. If you want a bit of time to think of something, there's no rush - I'll leave this one open until I'm actually ready to record the video, which I expect will be at least a week or so away.

Time for another Q&A

Oh no, I saw your post, reminded myself to reply, got distracted, remembered and reminded myself again, got distracted, rinse and repeat. Story of my life, really. But I appreciate your kindness.

Matt Austin

Sorry Matt, I'll try to give a bit more notice next time!

Drat, I missed the cut-off, looks like I'll have to wait a couple of months till 50k! We'll done, Martin.

Opinion on the Suburban Rail Loop? Do you think it’ll be beneficial to everyday users? Congrats on 40,000!

CoolSkeletn957

Love your vids! Very informative and entertaining, you were the source that spark my interest in railway and public transport, keep up the great and high quality work! My question is which train type announcement do you find the best in the current fleet? And by extension were there any automated announcement for older trains like Hitachi and Blue Harris?

Vent

hey! ur videos are cool ur cool kind of a random question, but which do u prefer - the green and gray interiors of the alstom comengs and x'traps or the yellow and white interiors of the EDI comengs, siemens, and HCMTs?

Favourite song about trains? Favourite song to listen to whilst on trains

Jed Smith

Hey man, whats your opinion on land acquisition for rail projects. Tunnel Boring Machines might be the least disruptive but they are also very expensive, and fitting out the tunnels takes a very long time.

Toby

I can’t believe it’s been a year already! Do you have any plans to make more dedicated station/junctions explainer videos? The Southern Cross/South Melbourne, Flinders Street, and Sydney Central explainer videos are some of my favourites on the channel (alongside the Hurstbridge Line, Upfield Line, and the two runaways of course).

Zach Cooper

Congratulations. 40k is well deserved! Question(s): In your opinion, what is the best/where is the Melbourne train/tram/transport network at it's best? Where could others learn from Melbourne. And where is it at it's worst? Where and/or how could you make the trains/trams/transport network better? Any ideas you have seen at other places that you would like to see implemented in Melbourne?

Øystein Furu Almo

Congrats on hitting the 40k mark! Your videos always make me feel nostalgic about the time I spent in Melbourne way too many years ago. Apologies for the non-transport related question, but I am curious: Has the success of your videos impacted your enjoyment of rail transit and in what ways?

Pete

The fact you doubled your sub count in a year is crazy! Question: Do you think Melbourne's current bus network is sufficient? e.g fleet, routes etc. If not how do you think they could improve it? For instance my local bus route runs only a few times during peak 🙃

Blockypc

Question: Assuming that all the remaining work on the existing Metro Tunnel and line upgrade projects as already approved by the government are complete (crossing removal, line upgrades, metro tunnel , SRL east, etc) what would you spend money on next if it were up to you? Would you fund the rest of the SRL? The airport link? Or would you have a different list of large rail projects you would fund?

Alex Garner

Congrats on 40k. You've come so far and it's great to see you improving with every video. Question: What are your general thoughts on the public transport systems of the 5 major Australian cities (Perth, Adelaide, Melbourne, Sydney and Brisbane)? What's one good and one bad element of each system?

Gauger

Ayyyy 40k, very nice! Im an urban planner and have much to say and many opinions on Melbourne’s train stations. I was wondering if you could, from a land use planning and development standpoint, give us your top 3 best stations and bottom 3 worst station? Here’s to the next 20 thousand!

invisiblehand24

Congrats on 40k dude, that's a huge number compared to last year Have you visited every single station on the network yet (as in set foot on the platform of every Metro station), and if not, which ones do you have left?

mattjj_

Well done on 40k! Do you think the new CAF Civity trains are an appropriate replacement for our long distance XPT’s and Xplorer’s?

Zave the XPT and the Xplorer and the V Set and…

Love the content always! Keep it up. Interesting one and Very anecdotal but Berwick on the Pakenham line seems to have significant growth in use. I know closures due to works ( 6 weeks in last 12 months) paint a picture of other stations with much more patronage, but the new multi level car parks and bus exchange to me see it as one of the busiest on the line! And in theory a new usage station- Any evidence to support this?

Safety Stu

Congrats on 40k How efficient do you find Melbourne’s public transport network for getting around the city and suburbs, and are there any specific areas you think need improvement?

Owen Terry

Growing super quick! Congrats on 40k! My question is what railway crossing do you think should've been included in the LXRP that hasn't been, and also what are your thoughts on the LXRP just closing crossings instead of grade seperating?

Sam Betts

Oh and why

Jed Smith

congrats on 40,000!! Continuing on from George's question, what rolling stock would you like to see/would be used on an Aussie HSR line? my thoughts are probably something either based on the TGV design i.e TGV-Avelia (the Amtrak one) or Hitachi AT300 based. Again, congrats on 40k!

SaltyAussie

Congrats on 40k! If you had to compare every Melbourne-based AFL team to a train line, which team would be which line?

Jordan

Hey Martin, congrats on 40k I was wondering what your favourite station was on the electric network?

Jed Smith

Woo hoo congrats! What are your thoughts on vlocities for long distance routes? I know there isnt much choice now the government has invested a lot in them to take over the N class, however I feel like they arent suited to it, especially without buffet/food offerings. Are there any realistic steps you see that Vline can take to make long distance journeys better (maybe drinks/food trolleys like a plane) or even wifi? Or are we just stuck with this for the foreseeable future?

Andrew Milici

good job on 40k subs! after the werribee line do you know what line you will choose for an in depth video on?

Jackary!

Congrats on the 40k!! What was the last Melbourne metropolitan station you visited- and what do you think of the current PTV railway map?

oxthcar

Love your videos! Congratulations on 40k. Should the airport rail link and possibly other projects such as the city loop reconfiguration and melton electrifcation be prioritised over the srl?

Billy Evans

Congrats on 40k! What do you think the chances are of the HSRA business case actually amounting to anything real?

George Fischer
