As far as I know from my time playing football and baseball, the point in wrapping an injury in tape is to keep swelling down, reduce pain, and increase blood circulation to speed healing up, as well as protect the area from further injury. And if its on a joint injury, to reduce the movement of that joint so as not to aggravate the injury further.
