He was also on Tough Enough alongside winner Maven and was one of the few people ever signed after Tough Enough despite not winning

Steamed Ham Champion Dillon Haggett

You haven't heard of Chris Nowinski because he basically had to retire soon after this match. He got concussed bad here, and then received a few more in short succession later in 2003 and stopped wrestling. He is a legit Harvard graduate, and took all that knowledge to create the premiere concussion research center in the country. His work with athletes over the past 20 years is the reason we have concussion protocols in sports now, and chair shots to the head are banned in WWE.

Noct

I agree with Philly. 2005 Just Close Your Eyes, then this as number 2.

Adam Nelson

No one picked drew that was where they forgot it was his push with the pandemic mania but I think Josh picked Austin in the 01 rumble.

David

Since no one mentioned it a couple of things: that Bill DeMott guy that came in with no pop would go on to be head trainer of DSW (Deep South Wrestling), very briefly FCW (Florida Championship Wrestling) as it rolled over to NXT and Tough Enough, the spiritual predecessor to LFG. He was fired in 2015 due to allegations of bullying, homophobia, sexism and many other things. Kenny Omega made allegations against him which is why he quit DSW in 2007. The guy named B2 that came out was partnered with John Cena at the time and is actually the father of NXT wrestler Brooks Jensen. Oh yeah Tommy Dreamer smacked Jericho in the face with the kendo stick which is why Jericho smacked him hard with it back and threw it at the ground in frustration. Josh missed Matt Hardy nearly falling over on his way to the ring lol. Eddie Guerrero s music at the time is one of the only ones that had a catchphrase at the start. Only other two I can think of that did were Hurricane and Booker T. The tights Eddie’s wearing here, I have a pair of shorts with the same design on them. They’re awesome. Jeff Hardy used to come out with glow in the dark paint on his face and body which is what’s all down his left arm. Guess how Undertaker got hurt, Big Show threw him off the stage lol. Brock also beat Big Show earlier in the night to get into the Rumble match as Show had beaten him for the title. Didn’t Josh pick Drew for the 2020 Rumble too?

Steamed Ham Champion Dillon Haggett

Yeah... definitely considered it.

Adam Nelson

Earlier in the show I’m pretty sure they even had a camera angle from the tron that the waterfall was in front of.

Steamed Ham Champion Dillon Haggett

You didn’t mention that H vs Steiner is the exact opposite of Angle vs Benoit lol.

Steamed Ham Champion Dillon Haggett

Then Crash Holly joined them briefly and he was called a Mooreon. V1 Matt’s biggest story was cutting weight to be eligible to wrestle for the Cruiserweight Title, which at the time had a weight limit of 225.

Steamed Ham Champion Dillon Haggett

Nah I think it sucks

Steamed Ham Champion Dillon Haggett

Of course you didn't.. because why would they build A WHOLE BLOODY WATERFALL for some random Royal Rumble in 2003? 😂

aloneinabox

Trish Stratus originally managed a tag team, T&A. It was Test and Albert, the hairy guy. Test was also involved in a show romance with Stephanie. Their in ring wedding was broken up by HHH, when he announced he and Stephanie had already eloped.

Karen

one thing we can all agree on is Rumbles are just fun. Brock winning here leads to his WM19 match with Kurt Angle that you watched the same match Lesnar landed on his head from the shooting star its was also the same WM that had Austin vs Rock 3 Austin's retirement match that i submitted a few months ago

RW____96

Everyone who started watching after Christian’s haircut feels the same way. It’s been 20 years of this.

CG

2005 version of Just Close Your Eyes is my favorite of his 🔥🔥

Phillyman!!

Didn't see it mentioned, but I'll note that Jamal/Umaga is also Jacob Fatu's uncle. Jacob's father is also Rikishi's brother, making Jacob the first cousin of Jimmy, Jey and Solo. So a lot of ties to the current day.

John Cowheel

That Christian theme is awesome though

Diruroru

And left the company for years after WrestleMania 20. He really speed-ran his first WWE career.

Adam Nelson

!

Dport

I did NOT even notice it was a waterfall lol

This Rumble was one of the only few interactions that Brock Lesnar had with Batista and Kane. Back then, the brand split was more strict than it is today.

This was one of the matches I was waiting for. I was laughing when Austin and The Rock was picked. They both were not active at the time. Rock came back a few days later and Austin came back the next month. They would both be done full time after 2003. Yeah, for those old websites like wwemattitude.com you'll have to use the wayback machine if you want to see what the website really looked like at the time. Matt and Jeff Hardy wasn't together at the time. Jeff was on Raw and Matt Hardy was on Smackdown. Matt Hardy was also a heel. That guy outside the ring that was helping Matt Hardy is a close friend of Matt and Jeff named Shannon Moore (I used to call him Shannon Moron for some reason as a kid). In 2003 Moore became a heel acolyte of Matt Hardy, who had begun proselytizing a philosophy known as "Mattitude" and calling himself "Matt Hardy Version 1.0". Moore became a "Mattitude Follower" (abbreviated "MF'er") and started dressing like Hardy and accompanying him to ringside.

Christopher Barnes

Unfortunately yeah Well That and Jerry Lawler is also just human Garbage Wouldn't surprise whether it was him or Vince that came up with that "joke"(Tajiri is an awesome wrestler too it's just sad)

Paul Watson

Sign of the times.

Adam Nelson

There are some changes being discussed in the Tally Tier chat that could result in more hour+ matches being nominated. Worst case, there'll probably be another "Rumbles Only" poll next year.

Adam Nelson

🙏🙏🤞🤞

Phillyman!!

For context, the world title matches were Kurt Angle vs Chris Benoit (classic match that probably would have been nominated by now if it weren't for reasons you can probably guess) and Triple H vs Scott Steiner. You have seen A-Train recently. His name is Matt Bloom, and he's the head coach at the Performance Center, so he has been shown several times in LFG. Test was an upper midcard/borderline main event guy for a while and was "engaged" to Stephanie McMahon before Triple H roofied her and married her at a drive through in Vegas. Attitude Era was wild.

Adam Nelson

We need more rumbles in the patreon. A lot of them should be under an hour. Question: the 1992 rumble is 62 minutes. Inelligble?

Mahmood Al Mardi

Seeing as nobody has mentioned yet - here's a random unncessary fact about this show: I don't think you noticed but the entire left side (as you look at it) of the stage is a giant waterfall that they're projecting on to. I always loved that as a kid XD

aloneinabox

Them dubbing the 3 Minute Warning song should be a criminal offense

THECRIMSON FUQER

He actually got a concussion in this match. Edge and Rey mistimed their top rope drop kicks so Edge’s knee comes down on Nowinski’s head.

Steamed Ham Champion Dillon Haggett

Ah ah ah, you forgot one thing, beat Hulk Hogan, by pass out, on SmackDown, yes SmackDown, a couple of weeks before SummerSlam.

Steamed Ham Champion Dillon Haggett

Love this Rumble match. The stretch from 01-10 is pretty fantastic all the way through.

Steamed Ham Champion Dillon Haggett

I have such nostalgia for this show. It was one of the first shows i got on dvd as a kid. The theme song from this show is still stuck in my head.

THECRIMSON FUQER

Jerry Lawler casually being racist about Tajiri on commentary threw me the hell off

Paul Watson

Here’s the timeline of Brock Lesnar’s first year in WWE -Debuted on the Raw after Wrestlemania 18 -Won King of the Ring -Beat The Rock at Summerslam for the WWE title - Definitively beat The Undertaker in their title feud. -Lost the title to The Big Show after a Paul Heyman betrayal. -Won the Rumble -Main evented Wrestlemania 19 That’s like going from Evolve to the Main Event of Wrestlemania in a year, and it was awesome.

Ryan Redd

Entrant 3 is someone names Christopher Nowinski and he had to retire because in this match he got a BAD concussion. He is a founder of a place called the Concussion Legacy Foundation

Matthew Harvey
