2020 Men's Royal Rumble

Watch: https://streamable.com/iox1zr

Comments

I HATED this rumble. Mainly because I hate Lesnar with every ounce of my being and he absolutely ruined the entire match for me. I do occasionally go back and watch Edge's return but I fastforward to that part cause I am not watching Lesnar for one single second if I don't have to.

Becki Ashford

When this first aired they cut to the crowd when Edge speared Dolph and missed his first spear back in action entirely. People were pissed Dolph even tweeted pissed about it. Looks like they fixed it in the vod version. pretty cool.

Nicholas Kramer

One of the best rumbles in a very paradoxical way. The initial viewing is a massive roller coaster, as you don't see the full vision and the Brock Dominates All section is purpose-built to frustrate you. Then, you get the catharsis of his elimination, and the second act starts where it becomes the wild west. Then you get the third act where Edge's return kicks off nothing but main eventers coming out one after another and it becomes a crazy free-for-all that the best Rumbles always are. And Drew winning, cementing a new top star, sends you home happy. On rewatch, the whole thing is a blast. A fun and emotional story told from start to finish.

Noct

For the record elimination chamber march 8th in philly was the last ple before covid, and it was a couple weeks before mania they started filming in the performance center

KillerX316

Yes, for the record. AJ Styles was injured here. If memory serves, his shoulder was dislocated on his landing after that spear.

Willow Falls

Drew was getting over before this match is what you have to understand, but he was not the main event level star that we know him as today before this match, and the common criticism of the WWE in this era and for really 15 years before this was that they didn’t know how to make new Babyface stars, and I would have to say that criticism was generally accurate, because this era was Vince at his worst, but credit where credit is due, the WWE did an excellent job at making Drew into a top guy in one night. Watching this live was a genuine pump your fist in the air scream and shout moment, which we didn’t get a lot of in this era of WWE. I’m not saying that Drew would have been as big as Cody is now, I don’t think that would have happened, but if not for Covid, I think Drew would have been a bigger face star than he ended up being, not that he was not extremely successful in that role, but I think that by the time fans came back, it just didn’t hit the same.

Ian Hernandez

Same. For Edges return. Shame everything he did after the Seth feud was average or boring

Steamed Ham Champion Dillon Haggett

You were also lucky that they’d dropped the red lights for The Fiends matches

Steamed Ham Champion Dillon Haggett

My issue was so many guys getting nothing. Like Rowan was in there for nine seconds. Roode, Morrison, Shelton, Cesaro and Nakamura deserved a bit more.

Steamed Ham Champion Dillon Haggett

He’s been runner up the most times.

Steamed Ham Champion Dillon Haggett

Hopefully they do at least four so they watch 07.

Steamed Ham Champion Dillon Haggett

It’s memorable, I’ll give it that. I can’t remember any from 2010-2019 off the top of my head. Lol.

Big Ell

Exactly. Intended payoff.

Big Ell

Zach forgot to mention that one of the guys in 3MB was Jinder. Drew also accidentally did the Claymore when he tried throwing a big boot but his leather pants were so tight it ended up as a flying kick and thus the Claymore was born.

Steamed Ham Champion Dillon Haggett

I mean before Drew eliminated Lesnar

Steamed Ham Champion Dillon Haggett

The reaction was big, but I'm not usually a fan of the coming out and getting eliminated really quickly format for almost half of the Rumble. Plus, Brock didn't really need to be in this rumble since he was the champion.

Christopher Barnes

True

Karen

I’m not sure if Vince lasted ten seconds after booking Brock like this

Big Ell

Not really. It had the intended payoff.

Big Ell

It’s exactly what many of us did in 2020 when it was happening live

Steamed Ham Champion Dillon Haggett

Yes finally we’re getting the Rumbles! I love it. The Elias chant was “Walk With Elias.” The thing in Rowan’s cage was a big fake spider that Drew smashed with the steps. I felt Josh’s hatred for this as this is what I felt at the time. I was mainly annoyed at how quickly people were being chucked out. I don’t mind the idea of Brock dominating but at least keep these guys in longer than ten seconds. Nakamura’s theme in this was his heel theme where they added Japanese rapping so fans couldn’t sing along to it. MVP’s return was the first time he was in WWE in nearly ten years. I audibly yelled “YEEESS!” When Drew eliminated Lesnar. Watching it at the time was so cathartic. I remember a week or two before this Drew interrupted a match and Claymored someone and I thought “Drew has a shot at winning this thing.” Your apathy at Karl Anderson entering was hilarious and so accurate. Him and Luke Gallows are the definition of average and boring. Come to think of it Dolph Ziggler is too. Man you guys have no idea how happy I was seeing Edge return. It was unbelievable. It’s my favourite Rumble return ever. AJ also separated his shoulder taking the Spear from Edge. When this happened live they fucking cut away to some fans when Edge hit the first Spear and it was so frustrating. Like why would you cut when he’s just got in the ring. One thing I hate about modern WWE is when they cut to fans for their faces. I don’t care. Just show me what’s going on in the ring. As someone who has never liked Matt Riddle, Corbin eliminating him in 30 seconds was hilarious and I loved it. Josh asked if bare foot wrestlers ever get their toes stepped on, I would have to say yes. I remember Rusev fractured his foot when he wrestled barefoot so he started wearing boots afterwards. Tally’s reaction to Aleister Black was fucking hilarious. Josh’s reaction to Seth was also hilarious. So after that 5 on 5 on 5 Survivor Series tag match you watched, Dave Meltzer put out a report that Seth gave a rah rah speech backstage that was debunked instantly and then Seth would actually do a rah rah speech on the show. Then he formed this group with AOP and Buddy and started feuding with Joe and Owens. It had legs but one of the AOP guys got hurt, they were both pulled and eventually released and Seth and Buddy spent months on end feuding with Rey and Dom. Randy’s “AHHH!” And the hand wave was hilarious.

Steamed Ham Champion Dillon Haggett

Ok next year

Bobthekow

The best rumble imo

Bobthekow

too late lol

Dport

If you do the guessing game again, do a final guess once 30 comes out

Bobthekow

Watching Josh slowly sink into despair during the first half of the match is perhaps the funniest shit I've seen on this Patreon so far 💀

Paul Watson

Elaborate. If Brock doesn’t destroy everyone the way he does, do we still get that insane pop for Drew eliminating him?

Big Ell

We shall see!

Dport

Make no mistake, we enjoyed it. And playing a guessing game during it only made it better for us.

Dport

After watching this I wanted to revisit Brock vs Drew at Mania and it’s just really depressing to get a super hype video package in front of it and then it cuts to an empty Performance Center.

Jim Johnson

Oh damn! Glad they gave him another shot. I have much more respect for him, knowing that

Tallywags

To respond to Tally’s question at the end about Drew being fired. When Drew first joined the company, he was brought in and presented as “the future face of the WWE” they would always talk about how he was Vince McMahon‘s hand chosen superstar to lead the company into the future Drew was very young and still green in a lot of ways. He never really got over with the fans. Eventually, he found himself in a stable called the three man band. Which was three guys on the roster which WWE just didn’t really have any creative ideas or direction for. So they made them into a comedy group they would mostly just get squashed by other talent. Inevitably, Drew ended up getting fired because they couldn’t really see him as fulfilling the potential they had hoped for him. Drew then hit the independent circuit hard to improve all of his skills and really develop his character and charisma. All of the goal of making it back to WWE. That was his dream and he wanted to be there. He definitely improved all around during his time away from the company, and so WWE brought him back to give him a second chance feeling like they could see him living up to what they had hoped he would’ve been So that’s why he’s so emotional at the end. A few years prior, he was just floundering in the company and it seems like they had given up on him and he had worked his butt off to prove them wrong and this was a combination of them, giving him a chance to have the ball and run with it

Zach Faulkner

Damn I loved that lil KO/Joe team for a second :(

Woozie

I was watching a smosh video right before this too

Wilson Simons

“Who is this motherfucka?”

Big Ell

Running thoughts as I watch, hard at work. WWE volume is a little lower than usual. The ring announcer is Greg Hamilton. You’ll recognize him eventually. Before Rumble - About the Lesnar pick, there’s a reason we voted this year as opposed to others… A little surprised you didn’t remember a certain someone who had never won a title in front of fans until recently. Wondering if and when you guys pick up on it. 1 - enters as WWE champion instead of defending it, which is unusual. 2 - Ha. You guys need to watch the Elias/KO promo in Seattle. 3 - I think he had a pet spider? I forget. 4 - Was actually really over in NXT but injuries derailed his career. He’s an agent/producer now. 5 - Was longtime partner of Miz. He wrestles on AEW/ROH as Johnny TV sometimes. 6 - You are correct that he is known for silly saves in Rumbles. Usually… 7 - Yeahhhh 8 - Aw. Miss you. 9 - :( Wanted to see a swing. 10- Same rookie class as Brock, Batista, Orton, and Cena. 11 - :( Wanted to see more of him too. 12 - Surprise appearance that was supposed to be a one-off but it wound up landing him a job. 13 - Could have been a star, but Vince didn’t seem to like him and he had some illnesses derail his career. 14 - Roarrrr 15 - Sigh. Love him but not cut out for the Rumble life. 16 - woo. Tally figured it out. What a pop. One of the best Rumble moments ever. Wow potty mouth Tally! 🤬 17 - Tally’s big pick can do it! 18 - hopefully returns in 2025 Rumble 19 - He’s been in a zillion Rumbles, hopefully returns in 2025 as well. 20 - Great. oh they said Roman and Corbin had a match earlier. I’m sure it was amazing. 21 - Yes. His return after almost a decade retired! Also one of the greatest Rumble moments ever. 22 - Sometimes wrestlers in previous matches entered Rumbles and sometimes they didn’t. 23 - Brooo 24 - Luckily not many tag teams this year 25 - Nice reunion with his ex partner 26 - Crowd seems so happy 27 - Usually in the title matches instead of the Rumble itself 28 - Could be another big 2025 return! 29 - Joe Joe Joe 30 - Different era The rooting for picks was fun in its way but it made it unsure if you were enjoying what you were watching. Maybe pick entry #s when watching earlier Rumbles when you won’t know as many people. There’s never been a 31 but it’s heavily rumored for The Rock this year. Please no. Edge and Orton would have a 79284 minute match at Mania that many say might be going on still to this day. Daniel Bryan vs Bray Wyatt was the Universal Title match on the undercard. Wild how many current AEW guys are in this one. Fun “2 part” Rumble that turned a midcarder into a main eventer, and I wish they’d do that more often.

Big Ell

Wow I never noticed that either and I've also watched this match many times

Drew Or Die

Easily my favorite Rumble ever. Edge was my favorite wrestler growing up. When he was forced to retire, I almost stopped watching wrestling completely. When I heard his music hit, I started to cry. I don't think there's ever been a moment in wrestling that made me happier than that.

Drew Or Die

Oh Yh good rumble my fav still 04 tho and I love the 2nd woman’s rumble and obvisly some say the best rumble ever 92 rumble flair performance Im that was great

Ryan Evans

How many rumbles are u doing from the poll ?

Ryan Evans

After Roman’s awful 2015 Rumble win, Vince put him in the final two like 4 times to scare people into thinking he would win again.

Ryan Redd

And I was in person for the infamous Roman rumble win and yes it was that loud by people booing lol. F’ing hilarious today looking back 😂😂😂

Phillyman!!

Yes, AJ Styles separated his shoulder on his bump from Edge's spear. I believe he was supposed to be one of the last 4 guys in the match.

Adam Nelson

Idk how many you’re going to watch but can’t wait for the others 💯🔥

Phillyman!!

Yeah, Edge's eyes when he came through the smoke get me every time. For me, the next best moment was the Brock/Keith Lee confrontation, but Covid wrecked Lee's main roster run.

Adam Nelson

I had the same reaction with Brock in this Rumble. Wasn't one of my favorites.

Christopher Barnes

Lmao hilarious seeing yall go thru the same emotional process I did when I watched this

Woozie

I forgot this was the Edge return rumble but I've rewatched that clip so many times that I popped for it before it even happened cos I recognised the shot of Karl Anderson crawling toward the ropes right before it happened LMAO

Charlie

Your guesses made me realize that newer fans lump multiple eras and wrestling lore into one general time period 🤣 That’s actually pretty awesome

RF

Man I’ll never forget this day for bittersweet reasons I went to the show with some friends it was first time I was that close at an event I was like 14 rows back. (The show was at Minute Maid Park btw) But before the show it was the same morning that Kobe Bryant died and being a huge NBA fan that made me really sad and it honestly killed my mood for the show. But I really ended up enjoying the show. The first time I got to see the fiend in person also seeing Edge comeback is probably the best moment I’ve had live in person and I met Ray and Dom at Whataburger randomly after the show.

Jay T

Its time for everyone to make Josh and Tally to WALK WITH ELIAS! Cause they will change there opinions real quick when we show more of him😂

WWE Jay Gaming

No matter how many times I watch this I smile when Edge returns and when Drew wins. The look on Edges face gets me every time.

Abs Ali

Holy shit that’s smosh behind the commentary. I’ve watched this match a dozen times and I somehow never noticed them

Wilson Simons

Hell yeah lmao

Paul Watson

“OHHHHH. BIG BOY!?!”
