Mike Awesome vs Masato Tanaka ECW 1998

Comments

Yeah. Easily one of the most important people in ECW history who never really officially gets his flowers because he has a bad relationship with the WWE. Unfortunate. Would be nice to see him repair that relationship at some point.

Yeahhh that’s not a chop wound on Tanaka’s chest, that’s probably barbed wire scars. Tanaka wrestled in deathmatches in his home promotion of FMW. I believe Awesome had thrown Tanaka to the outside through the table previously, so now it was revenge time! Tanaka’s move the “roaring elbow” was really called the “rolling elbow” but was misinterpreted due to the Japanese language barrier. They figured it out later. Crazy time to be fan. Tanaka was 25 in this match. He is still wrestling today at age 51 which proves chairshots to the head are totally fine! /s

It’s Shane Douglas, and yeah he didn’t add too much on commentary, but man his promos were fire.

Big Ell

In the 80s and early 90s you definitely had to call your cable provider. Eventually they made it easy to just go to the channel and just use your remote and push enter on the show at the right time.

Big Ell

The crazy thing about Tanaka is that he took offense like in this match quite a bit and he still wrestles at a pretty high level today.

The name might be goofy, but Mike Awesome was a beast. I remember my brothers friend had a VHS or DVD of ECW he lent me and in it Awesome cut a promo where he said something along the lines of “I knocked her teeth right down her fuckin’ throat!” And not only did it terrify me that this big angry guy with a mullet in a dingy warehouse was cussing like that it also stuck with me. These two also had a match years later at the WWE promoted ECW tribute show One Night Stand that I’m certain will end up getting recommended soon. It took place the year before the Cena/RVD match you watched in the same building. There’s also a fascinating story about Mike Awesome later on in his ECW career that may come up in the Monday Night Wars doc series. That’s a shame, this was pretty forgettable.

You’ll never know the frustration and panic when you’ve ordered a show but it doesn’t show up on the PPV channel so you ring the provider to check you actually ordered the show.

This spots almost had me looking away lol

Tallywags

I always forget how brutal the chairshots and table spot in this match are. I physically cringe every time I watch those spots. Also, Joey Styles is such a good commentator. He carried that match pretty much by himself while his co-commentator (I think it's Shane Douglas? Maybe Cyrus/Don Callis?) does basically nothing. I know he's rated highly but I think he is still underrated as a commentator.

Zakk219

Yeah but it's only one line, and of course Joey Styles couldn't have known that Awesome would take his life two years later.

Dagur Hall

True, but looking back, there were some uncomfortable moments on commentary (because of what happened after).

Adam Nelson

When I saw this notification I was hoping it would be the one night stand match. It's the match I have watched most often out of every match ever probably, it's so great.

Dagur Hall

Man I didn't even have a tv in my room till I moved out lol

Dport

No awkward teenage Dport trying to buy terrible Girls Gone Wild ppvs without Mom finding out? It's like you didn't even LIVE.

Wade Kruse

Brother lol It's not an age thing, it's a "my family purchased exactly ZERO ppv shows my entire life" lol double or nothing a few months ago was the first time I've ever bought something at home considered PPV lol and that was at age 32

Dport

"How did you buy a ppv in 1998" the child asks, as I feel myself age into nothingness in real time.

Wade Kruse

Rip Mike awesome

Ethan Sofinowski

No complaints lol I love it

Dport

4:00 to be fair, there was also a wrestler who went by Justin Credible. It was the 90's, what can I say lol

VegasViking

Beast match. Crazy that this isn't even the best Awesome/Tanaka match.

Will Humphries

Yea you turn on the tv guide channel with all the tv programming and wait for the ppv scrolls by with the number to call to order the ppv. Challenging but fun times 😂

Phillyman!!

Awesome! When WWE released a DVD called the Rise and Fall of ECW they were taken back by how well it sold. It was that popular that RVD suggested they run a special 1 off PPV which was a celebration of ECW called One Night Stand in 2005. Mike Awesome (who broke his contract with ECW and turned his back on them to go to WCW) and Tanaka ran this match back and it was just 10 minutes of pure ECW violence. Many considered it to be the match of the night.
