Most everyone, including me, figured it was Cody. Even though it seemed so unlikely because he had help found AEW and been so vocal against WWE. Yeah you reacted to Sami vs Knoxville and Becky vs Bianca from 38. As great as Samantha Irvin is, and she is, Mike Rome is criminally underrated and his announcing of Cody in this match gives me goosebumps and makes me tear up. It’s odd too because I’m not a Cody fan. But this return was special.

The question was were we getting the American Nightmare or the Cody Rhodes he was before leaving WWE or dare I say Stardust. The thing that blew everyone away was that we were getting his entire presentation since leaving WWE complete with the Kingdom music and the Codyvator.

2024-08-14 18:55:25 +0000 UTCWas definitely 99.9% Cody but still surreal, especially with his AEW presentation/theme music, etc. The match itself was good but suffered from what I like to call Obvious Winner Syndrome. I highly recommend the Backlash rematch and of course the Hell in a Cell to finish their trilogy.

2024-08-14 15:51:00 +0000 UTCit wasn’t a big rumor nor did it have a lot of suspense behind it but some people including myself thought it would be undertaker. the reasoning behind that is this wrestlemania was the year undertaker got inducted into the HOF, the night prior. it was an amazing speech probably my favorite ever but at the end of his speech like when he was exiting the ring he said “never say never” in his undertaker gimmick voice. his last match was vs AJ styles at wrestlemania 36 during covid in a boneyard match, purely cinematic match similar to the firefly fun house match on the same card. so some people thought taker might want to come back to have one more final match in front of a real crowd, especially against seth who is one of the best workers. cody was the #1 suspect to return but when those lights went out i can admit i thought undertaker’s old ass really was gonna come out instead of cody 😭😭

Had no clue that AEW existed so when Cody came out I was like oh its just Stardust. Didnt really care about him because he was just a midcarder to me. Once the Bloodline with Sami Zayn started which really was a couple weeks after this WM 38 I started watching full time until now.

This was also after McMahon had fired a TON of people, so some people were speculating guys like Bray Wyatt making a return or an old legend like The Rock. I remember thinking I can't believe he's actually back. And keeping his American Nightmare character too! Unreal. He had coined the "Undesirable to undeniable" phrase a little before this in a promo in AEW so it was all surreal.

2024-08-14 00:08:47 +0000 UTCSo fun fact I was there for this match and while rumors were cody and bray, some were hoping myself included that it would be the Undertaker for one last match, I am so Happy it was cody looking at it after the fact, hearing the crowd chant Cody in the moment gave me goosebumps then hearing the open to his theme i lost it, then seeing that he was the American Nightmare made me lose it further as Cody developed the character outside wwe and he was back home. So happy you enjoyed it

Cody was not the American Nightmare, didn’t use the Cody cutter, wasn’t even blonde, until he left the WWE. Seeing an AEW executive vice president wrestling at Wrestlemania in full AEW gimmick with his AEW theme song, AEW logos, AEW nickname, etc was absolutely surreal.
