Edgerunner DxD: Prologue [High School DxD][Commission]

Prologue

Her Lord, Azazel, had just entrusted her with another mission! It was she, Raynere, that got to enforce their lord's will and not those skanks. Just thinking how they're crawling over his beloved and touching him with their filthy hands had her blood boiling.

"Um, Raynare," Mittelt called, snapping her train of thought. Turning to the tiny blonde, she found her companion looking at her in worry. "You ok there?" The girl questioned as the girl grabbed her hand and pulled her away.

Just as she was about to protest, she noticed the familiar mop of silver hair passing by. Eyeing the half devil youth storm away, she let out a breath of relief. "Y-yeah," She replied as she clutched her head before she grimaced, "Just a bit distracted." She really should stop worrying about the other girls in her lord's life.

"You know we can pass this mission off to another team if you're feeling under the weather," Kalawarner reminded her as she sighed "We just finished our mission over in South America last week," The much more mature brunette reminded her as a teasing smile stretched across her lips. "You could use a break. To get your mind off things." She whispered.

Walking over, she slipped her hands to her shoulder. Letting out a satisfied groan, Raynere considered. It was just another assassination mission. Go in, stab someone, and slip out before slipping out. There was little glory or fun in that.

Shaking her head, she pulled away. That was exactly the line of thought that allowed Celene to get into her lord's good grace. "No, we're doing this mission and that's final you hear me!" She hissed back before tucking in her wings closely.

Backing away, Kalawarner raised her hands in surrender. "Ok, chill," She replied before crossing her arms. Looking away, she added, "Don't say I didn't warm you."

Raynere scoffed as she marched away and headed for her lord's tent. She knows damn well how distractions can get them all killed. There was a reason she's the one leading them after all. She didn't need to be reminded every time.

Huffing, she passed by the guards to her lord's tent. It seems that they know well not to mess with her. Lifting the veil, she entered Azazel's dwelling. Even out here in the field, her lord never failed to bring his experiments with him. Exotic materials and strange artifacts littered the cluttered tent. Strangely however, the room was quiet.

There was no thrumming of power, nor the panic shouts of her lord as he tried unraveling the secrets of God's sacred gear. There was only silence as she would find no sign of her lord inside the tent. "Lord Azazel?" She called out, trying to see if he had just fallen asleep. "I'm here for the mission!" She shouted as she gingerly walked in, doing her best not to disturb any of the artifacts littered across the floor.

Navigating the minefield, she'd find his bed empty. He hadn't fallen behind his desk as well. "Where are you?" She whispered as she looked around in worry.

Aside from the empty room, the only things of note was a lone artifact of her lord's desk as well as a pile of notes. Staring into the device, she felt a shudder run up her spine. She felt nothing and it was terrifying to behold.

It was no mere absence of air or magic, but the complete lack of everything. There sitting in the table was the void contained. The fact that it felt active only fueled her worry. Why would her lord leave his experiments unattended.

Just as she was about to leave to question the guards, a letter over his desk caught her eyes. It lay there strewn as if her lord had to leave in a hurry. Walking over, she noticed that it was addressed to her lord. Curiosity quickly got the better of her as she took a small peek before she let out a long suffering groan.

No wonder her lord left in such a hurry, he was supposed to talk to the Angel Gabriel. Reaching up to squeeze the bridge of her nose, she muttered, "No wonder he's gone." She wasn't sure if she should be angry or disappointed.

As she looked around his desk, she would also find a letter addressed to her. Grabbing the hastily written letter sitting atop the usual set of files for her targets, she found her mission written down along with orders to avoid conflict with the Devils in the area at all cost. Understandable as they don't need a war.

Her gaze soon fell upon the mysterious device. She didn't know what it was, but clearly it was something that her lord was obsessing over. Walking around to observe it, she'd find a sticky note attached to the device. "Danger! For testing as soon as possible." It read.

Biting her fingers, she tapped her foot. She knows she shouldn't touch anything from her lord's workshop as they could explode, but this was a device that was already being tested so it was safe enough for her to test it. Some would say it's insanity, but she sees it as an opportunity

Surely, her lord wouldn't mind if she tested it right? Afterall, he was a busy man and this would be one less thing for him to worry about. Grinning from ear to ear, she grabbed the device as well as any notes that looked vaguely useful for testing.

Attaching it to her hips, she considered leaving the device, both for her own safety as well as others, but decided otherwise. If she wasn't going to risk it, then how can she impress her lord? Her lords love those with initiative!

With her mission on hand and a device to test, she walked out of her lord's tent. She was going to make her lord proud! She could already hear her lord's praise for being such a useful and obedient angel.

"Hey Raynare, who's our target!" Mittlet shouted, breaking her out of her day dream. If she wanted to make him proud, she'd have to work.

Rolling her eyes at the petite girl's enthusiasm, she replied, "Some random Japanese kid by the name of Issei Hyoudou." She wasn't sure why her lord was so interested in him. Unlike the rest of the brats she had to eliminate, this boy was a nobody.

"Eh? Sounds boring!" The girl replied and he couldn't help but nod along. This man, no, this boy was boring. Even the fact that their target was deep inside Devil Territory didn't excite her one bit.

He was no scion to a famous lineage nor did he have any discernible talents based on the files. She could find nothing about him that screams danger, but her lord decreed that he must die and so shall he. "At least it would be easy," She shrugged. Whoever this boy was, he's a dead man walking. He just doesn't know it yet. Who knows, maybe she could return after just a day.

Raynare was wrong about her mission, so very much wrong about it. Where did it all go wrong? Grabbed by the collar by some tiny white haired brat, all she could do was struggle as she was dragged back into the church.

It started off smoothly, great even as she found her target without a hitch. Establishing the boy's habits was easy, hilariously so as the boy all but screamed what he wanted to the winds. He was honestly cute, in the innocent virgin way. He was so easy that it was almost adorable.

She even got time to find herself a cute little nun, courtesy of Freed, to play with. Not only was she going to finish him off, but she'd also get a Sacred Gear to bring back to her Lord. Everything was going well, until he ruined it. That boy, that stupid boy, had to be the hero. Why did he have to ruin everything!

With a pained grunt, she landed face first on the ground. She could feel her body aching as she laid there. Breathing alone was painful. Still, the pain she felt was nothing compared to the humiliation she suffered.

"So you must be Raynere, lovely entrance," The Red Haired Devil bitch taunted her as she looked down on her from up in the altar, just like the rest of the bitches at the camp. She hated it! Hated it! Hated it!

Why? Why did it all go wrong! She had everything planned out, but it spiraled out of control. Gritting her teeth, she forced herself up to her knees. With blood dripping on her forehead and stomach as well as her back feeling like one giant bruise, she was in no shape to fight back. "Fuck you," She spat out as she glared up at her.

"A spirited one hmm?" The girl smirked as she tilted her head at her. "You really ought to see the situation you're in," She scolded her mockingly as she walked towards her. "You're battered and bloodied, your forces defeated, and your friends?" She said before she held a fist over her and opened it, letting feathers fall upon her.

Looking up at them in horror, she felt fear creep up her spine. No! No! No! This can't end like this, not when she was so close! "The less I tell the better. They made quite the mess," The girl laughed and Raynere felt anger bubbling up to her chest.

"You bitch," She shouted as she did her best to fight back the tears. "You'll pay. All of you will pay!" She screamed. She might not like them, but they were still her friends. "My lord would have your head for this," She hissed.

"I very much doubt that given that it was you who trespassed into Gremory land, that and you kept targeting my adorable new pawn," The girl fired back with an amused smile. "Do you think the Grigori would risk war for a rogue agent like you?" She asked.

Raynare clenched her fist as she bent over, head hung low as they gloated over her. As their words rang into her ears, she felt the words of her detractors join them. She could see their smiles as they laughed and jeered at her. As she felt her thoughts drowned out by their screams, Raynare felt something snap inside her.

"Don't you dare look down on me," She gritted out as she tried getting up even as her legs kept giving under her. Their look of pity only served to fuel her as she got back to her knees. "Don't you dare!" She screamed as she tried summoning her light only for it to sputter and fail.

"You think you're better than me just because you outnumber me?" She raved as she glared at them. A school girl, a traitor, a broken boy, a lost little cat, a disgusting worm, and a box of all things was all it takes to defeat her. No, she was still alive. She can still fight.

"Yuma…" Issei, that worm, spoke as he looked at her with sadness. How dare he look at him like that!? How dare he!

"Don't you dare speak to me!" She screamed at him as he stumbled, her legs unsteady, but she managed to pull true. Standing proud with her wings stretched out, she shouted, "You think we had a bond just because we had a little date? Don't make me laugh."

"You're a sad pathetic excuse of a boy, chasing after love that you'd never ever have because who would even love someone as disgusting as you!" She laughed as the boy's flinched away. Good, that's a much better look for him in her eyes.

"Hah…" She chuckled, feeling for her waist. "A shame that I'd never watch you die alone and unwanted because you're all going to die with me," She whispered as she pulled on the device and held it high above her head.

The last thing she saw as nothingness swallowed them whole was the red light of destruction barreling her way and the look of horror in their eyes as the void swallowed it up. She felt her body stretch, before there was light.

In truth, the device was not a mere bomb, but a portal. A device that was capable of creating rifts to swallow all those caught in its blast out into the Dimensional Gap where they would be torn apart by unreality and those that live in it. Normally, that was how it should work. However, strange things started to happen as it swallowed up the Power of Destruction.

Space and time bent as the Power of Destruction met the exotic effect of Azazel's device. Fueled by such equally exotic energies, the rift stabilized, creating a gateway. A tunnel of reality bored its way through the space between space as physics was forced upon its unreality, catapulting those within far away, further than any being from their world would reach.

There in the screaming abyss, seven souls would tumble across the vast distance between dimensions, traveling across time, space and beyond, into a whole new world; One where magic was merely fantasy and where corporations reign supreme.

Above Night City, the very sky split open as denizens from beyond landed within its borders
