This was a great video John. Videos like this reminded me of why I follow and other similar channels about analyzing the stories behind games and other outlets. I love how there is always more depth behind the subject. Your videos have such a rich quality that's rare these days, and I dont think that's something a lot of channels possess nowadays. I didn't even know this game existed until you talked about it in your charity stream earlier this year. For the longest time, I thought Lucas was "the other guy" from Earthbound because of Smash Bros. – I guess that's two classic RPGS I need to catch up on at some point. (Also, as someone who does a lot of longhand writing, I really need to track down one of those Hobonichi journals. My Rustico notebooks don't have enough inspiring Japanese quotes. They definitely owe you sponsorship royalties.)

The psychological contrast between Porky and Lucas is really interesting and pretty much necessitates playing through both Mother 2 & 3 to get the full picture. *SPOILERS* In Mother 2, the contrast presented itself as Ness, a kid with a comfortable family life, and Porky, a kid who suffered through the attitudes of indifferent parents who appeared to regularly abuse him. Porky develops a similar attitude to his parents and becomes extremely selfish, but Ness develops himself through his friends, his adventures, and through occasional phone calls back home. In Mother 3, Lucas loses most of his family and, instead of becoming selfish and egotistical, he simply makes new friends while searching for his brother and grows through his hardships. In contrast, Porky never really grows up. His family is gone, and so he builds an artificial reality grounded in the banalities of late stage capitalism. To make his artificial reality more real, he forces this reality on everyone else. At the very end, when Porky's lost the final battle, he refuses to let his false reality break by simply shutting himself up in a metal capsule and likely closing his eyes in order to continue believing that his vision was correct all along. This type of narrative contrast is really awesome, and it shows that, as old as Porky was, he never actually completed his development as a person. Lucas outpaced him by accepting hardship and failure as inevitable and eventually moving beyond them.

I have never played the games before, but this video made me cry when you were talking about how the game ended.
