So this time we’re doing The Current State of Shonen Jump 2020.
This is a video that’s been requested for a long time but something I’ve been reluctant to go back to. The first time I did one of these videos was back in 2017, I knew very little about how Shonen Jump works and the videos was rife with inaccuracies and errors, easily the worst video I’ve ever done.
Around a year and a half later I redoubled my efforts, got in contact with the author of a reddit post that had pointed out the flaws in my video and hired him to help with research and fact checking, and while the result was a much stronger video, there was still too major problems, 1: I was still using TOC averages over sales data to gauge a series popularity (Looking at how Jump structure there table of contents we can see it push popular titles to the front, unpopular titles to the back, at least that was the idea) but given how jump has never confirmed this, its an unreliable metric to build an argument around.
The second was that I used a picture of Go Nagai instead of Akira Toriyama. This came about for two reasons, 1- theres like maybe 2 usable photographs of Toriyama online, both from when he was very very young, and 2, one of the top search results for “Akira Toriyama” is for some reason, a photo of Go Nagai. And so, thinking that Toriyama had just… aged weird, I dropped the photo in and… man. The internet was pretty brutal, a lot of people used the mistake to make the argument that I knew nothing about manga or anime, or that I dont put any effort into my videos, both of which hurt a lot.
I joke about it in the new video, but in truth it really got to me, and put me off making a video like this again for a very long time, until today.
So, maybe I should have just left it alone, but I really think a video like this should exist, and I really wanted to make good on the concept, and so I’ve put a lot of time and effort into trying to understand people's criticisms of previous videos, and work it into todays upload.
I hope it goes well, and I really hope you enjoy.
Thanks again for the continued support <3

Making mistakes on a video like this is only natural considering how much data there would be to take into account. But you’ve already made so much progress in recognizing your mistakes with them it seems. Excited to watch this one!
