The Amazing Engineering of Rescue Helicopters - Smarter Every Day 289

A HUGE congratulations to Hockenberry who just retired from the US Coast Guard! I thought this tour was really fun, and as you can tell I enjoyed geeking out during the walk around!

Also, thank you so much for supporting on Patreon! The fact that you support helps me a ton.  Last month there was an issue with the YouTube monetization system and for almost 2 weeks Smarter Every Day didn't get any money from YouTube ads.  Thank you for making it so I didn't have to stress!

Regards,

Destin

I still can’t get over how close that rotor blade is to that door cover when open. Yikes

I went to that station!

Great video buddy. But you need a low-pass filter on the video whenever you're in the hanger. Pretty loud buzz there.

Darn glad to have the USCG on duty here in Rochester NY. I think the helicopter is Buffalo based, but it can get here quickly. I’ve seen it more than once.

I’m glad to see you found a sponsor for this one. It was a good video. I look forward to seeing the helicopter in action.

Destin, Awesome video and coverage of the USCG with your deep dives. My older brother was Coast Guard and did his tour at USCG Fire Island Radio Annex in New York in the mid 60's. If you ever decide to expand your CG deep dives into other functions of the CG, check out USCGFIA and there's some history on the "Togetherweserved" website with bios and such of the Annex. Some interesting aspects of radio communications and lighthouse operations you might enjoy.

I love those dolphin helicopters.. I've never gotten to see one so close up, so this video was cool to see just how big they are! I was bummed when the MD state police retired theirs and are using Leonardo AW-139 instead.. although they're cool in their own right! Cant wait to see the next in the series!!

Thanks Destin. This was an interesting and informative video. I am enjoying this series. Keep the knowledge coming. I enjoy learning!

Buddy of mine was a swimmer out of a Mobile, AL base and always had cool stories to tell. I remember one in particular about his training where the crew flew offshore at night, dropped him in the water with all of his gear, and then left for a period of time (maybe 45 minutes). He said it was a threefold exercise: 1) Give you an idea of how people being rescued felt, 2) Test your mental/physical reaction to being in open water at night, and 3) Give the flight crews training with spotting a swimmer in open water.

When I was in the Army, I remember being told that (aerodynamically speaking) a Chinook shouldn't be able to fly. No idea if that's actually true or not, but it stuck with me. Particularly when I had to ride on one! Great video Destin! Thanks for expanding my knowledge on these fascinating machines!

Helicopters don't actually fly, they just vibrate so much the Earth rejects them. πŸ˜‰

Flew the SH-3H in the Navy. One million parts working against each other to keep you in the air. πŸ˜‚πŸ˜‚πŸ˜‚πŸ˜‚πŸ˜‚πŸ˜‚
