I've been wanting to see a tree shaker for years.

I've seen videos of these tree shakers, but I've always been curious about how they work.  While getting my haircut the other day the barber said "Hey Destin, Frank the Pecan farmer up the road said he's going to be shaking trees over the next few weeks and you might like to see the operation".  Living in Alabama is so awesome.  There are so many interesting people doing neat things here.  I took hours of footage of pecan trees shaking.  Ultimately I decided it was really pretty and it would be fun to put it together in a music montage.  Gordon from "A Shell In The Pit" wrote a new song specifically for this video.  It's called "Some Light Left".  I hope you enjoy the video, and as always thank you for your support!  I make a conscious effort to not try to "win the algorithm" but to only make videos I find interesting.  Enjoy the video!

Regards,

Destin

“Ya grow up knowing something, then you LEARN something”! Awesome quote!

Keith Waggoner

The wave properties of shaking the tree at 90 degrees are unchanged because you are just moving through tangent. The energy needs to be dispersed anyway and the branches and branchlings (sic) of the tree will still dissipate energy the same because of the “whip” properties (for the same reason a cracked whip doesn’t rotate it’s end 90 degrees, it’s fixed at one end 🖐 Shake it conically, diagonally or axially to get a really really interesting effect

I would love to see that cracker in slow motion!!! It would be even better to see serval machines in slow motion so you could help him with his troubles! Thanks for the video keep up the good work !

Destin, can you post some shaking for patrons with less compression than youtube has? The leaves are neat but obviously broke youtube...

I'm from La. and saying that someone from 'Bama is correct is so very hard but in this case he right. :)

Beau Ranheim

Never thought that video about pecans would be so memorable , but the way you shot it and "Still some light left" song made this one of or even the most favorite episode from you yet. Thank you Destin for being and creating , greetings from Lithuania

I love you Destin but was dismayed at your mispronunciation of pecan. Dismayed I tell you! In South Georgia, the only acceptable pronunciation is pea-can 😉

Eric Kennedy

Great video when can we order for delivery?

I think it's really important for influential people like you to model safe behavior so I was dismayed to see the apparent lack of masks in this video. You've done such a great job in earlier videos talking about working with your community to build PPE and demonstrating good mask wearing hygiene in public spaces, so I was confused why none showed up here even when you were inside looking at the pneumatic cracker. Was this video filmed last year? If so: it would be nice to mention that on the side Were there other safety precautions taken that weren't mentioned? In that case, please consider mentioning them in the end credits.

Makes me genuinely happy to watch people who love what they do and watching destin just geek out over stuff like a pecan cracker =) made my day makes me feel understand why people respond to my enthusiasm for my job happy. Its always weird to think that doing what makes you happy sincerely makes others happy.

Had two trees in my backyard growing up. Spent hours doing the same thing sans the shaker and the automation. Sitting on a bench cracking one at a time. Didn't see a link, can you buy those pecans online, or are they only sold locally?

Beau Ranheim

I looked at buttered pecan ice cream in my online groceries after this and accidentally added to my cart, didn't realize until I got my deliveries! But I'm pleasantly surprised, I don't know about favorite flavor, but actually top tier. Love the video!

I probably just like you dreamed one day to see how these vibrators work in practice, since I never had a chance to see it. It's incredible!

VitAnyaNaked

As a person who gets allergy shots for pecan pollen allergy...I sneezed watching this. Amazing video. I’d love to send some business to Frank!

Randy Coffee

My friends had one pecan tree, and they laid out mesh under the trees for harvest time and let gravity do the work. They also had squirrels, but they considered they were paying "woodland taxes."

Kristy

ps: Noggin is often used in Ireland for "head" so I think there is some Irish ancestry near you :) ... plus we say "pea can" phonetically here. Pea like the veg and can like beer can.

Tom Murphy

Destin, what about harmonic resonance?!? Wouldnt a tuneable "shaker" be able to find the resonance and therefore shake the tree harder?? Loved the video!

Tom Murphy

Hey Destin, I am a PhD student studying structural dynamics of helicopter rotors. While a rotor is certainly different than a tree, the core concepts still hold true. In any dynamic mechanical system, there are natural vibratory modes. That is, regardless of what the forcing looks like, the system will respond through some combination of these natural frequencies and modes. So I think your slow motion footage has identified one of the natural vibration modes of the pecan tree. Really neat footage!!

How do we support this small business and order from them? I want these rich butter pecans in everything!

Thanks Destin for a video that brings back many happy memories. As always, I am smarter from it.

When I was maybe 10 years old, I helped my dad plant two pecan trees in the backyard of our north Louisiana home. One tree did not make it, but the other was still producing big beautiful pecans when dad passed away 30 years later. Now, 45 years after planting those trees with dad, I have two pecan trees that I planted in my central Texas back yard.

Thankyou Destin

Travis Boop

Time to make a Pecan Pie!!! Seriously though - We always look forward to your videos. Love your enthusiasm and desire to always learn something. I also love the fact the my kids can't wait to watch your latest video as well. Thanks for making interesting family friendly content.

Now I want to see a cellphone vibration motor...

"One donked me right on the noggin man!" Hahahahah Thanks Destin, now I want to eat pecans :D

The Kiwico.com/smarter50 does not work and does not provide a 50% discount :(

Lior Singer

That's what I've been thinking the last few years, want to move back to Texas & buy a pecan orchard! :) Seems like heaven to me, to tend those beautiful trees and enjoy their shade and nuts!

Great music for the montage Gordon! Thanks for sharing this wonderful experience Destin!

This was such a lovely video. I grew up in Mississippi with pecan trees in my back yard. We didn't have a farming operation like this one, but we'd gather enough drops from shaking the tree by hand to do for a pie or three for the holidays. Really enjoyed the music for this episode, too! Gordon did fine work.

Second - Destin, I can't tell you how much your stuff means to me every time I watch. I always learn something - a lot of times things I never even knew I had to know! You're a good teacher and I absolutely love your always optimistic and positive approach. Continued best wishes for you and yours!!

Ed Williams

First, best wishes to Dad as his apparently lifetime punishment continues.

Ed Williams

Love the low-key video ... also, brilliant punishment ... it both punishes and pays forever more.

Tristan Ursell

RIP YouTube's compression algorithm. :)

V.E. Griffith

This was great, thanks!

I’m glad you can make these videos

The first time as a child that I spelled the word pecan, I spelled it like I heard it, with a "b" a short "a" and with the emphasis on the second syllable also with short vowel. So I wrote down bacon, and it was some time before I realized they were different words.

Terry Moore

I wonder if he could ramp the RPM on the PTO to see if varying the frequency changed how effective it was at dropping the "Pee-cans"

Use a set of mirrors with the camera just outside the door.

Terry Moore

I second the suggestion to slo-mo the cracking drum to watch what happens! Also, I would think the further one is from the roots, the better the shaking would be and the more efficient it might be. But this video is super cool and I want to buy three bags! :)

Terry Moore

When I was in my teens, I spent 4-5 weeks harvesting cherries in Michigan, and we used a tree shaker with similar properties. The biggest difference was that the cherries fell onto two tarps on either half of the tree that were pulled out by four of us. When the cherries fell, the weight on the tarps was immediate, and I ended up with some serious muscles by the end of the season. The tarps would then roll back towards the machine and onto a conveyor belt that dumped them into a large vat of water. It was a tough job, but it was also cool to see. This looks like a more modern version of what I used with a second machine to catch the cherries (instead of manual labor): https://youtu.be/OX9QZbsvRTs

The view of the shaking from the drone was a very cool capture. Seeing the whole process from collection to opening the shell gives me a much greater appreciation of the effort involved when I open that bag of whole halves to make a pie. Did I understand the cracking machine mechanics properly? A single nut is put under stress along the longitudinal axis of the nut and then a quick impact is made along that same axis? Watching the Crack and Stress gauges fluctuate, I had to re-watch that portion of the video a couple times. I original thought the Crack gauge wasn't moving at all but it does. I would have thought the Crack gauge would have be the one to have the greater fluctuation. I enjoy all your videos but I do especially enjoy when you talk to farmers; takes me home.

Our Chinese chestnut tree also did not have chestnut to the year. Of course it is 2020. My thoughts on the 90° shaking is because the tree has such a long taproot the tree pivots almost equally in all directions. If it had a Shallow root system I believe it will vibrate differently. My wife the Master Gardener really enjoyed this one also. How do we know which type of because we are getting?

Hey Destin!! My husband and I absolutely LOVED this video! Is there a way to purchase pecans directly from Frank? We’d really love to support a small family business! Much love from SC! 💜

I absolutely love the “not playing for the algorithm”. It really makes it feel more genuine and wholesome. Keep doing what you want and not what you think YouTube wants!!

Thinking about leaving everything behind and starting a pecan farm.

PickleScratcher

Yeah, I'd like to get a bag of pecans, too. Is that possible? If not, that's ok, but l really enjoyed this. Getting smarter every day!

Oshiri

Destin, thanks for another fantastic video! The thing I love most of all about your videos is your enthusiasm and giddy excitement. It's always a joy to behold.

Yes THAT Tonya

I love corn mazes! And I'd love to see what happens from start to finish!

Yes THAT Tonya

Hi Destin, nice video! I appreciated the discussion of changing the angle of the shaker on the tree. Did you look at the amplitude/frequency of the shake? Is the frequency close to the resonant frequency of some part of the tree? Thanks!

You said Frank was local. Is there a certain farmer's market he sells at? I'd love to go buy some.

Can I buy some of his pecans online?

But, how did your Dad and Grandad harvest his trees? Seems like you've never seen a shaker before.

Art Mulder (WordsNWood)

Thought your fathers ‘punishment’ story was the most entertaining / human thing I have listened too in quite a while. Your grandfather passed down a punishment and a memory in equal measure. Thank your father for sharing with us. Wonderful.

Simon Walding

Pee-can over here in the UK. Just wish I could grow them over here.

Neat, I drive past the Green Valley Pecan Farm on my way to work in Arizona every day. Nice to see exactly how it works.

Barron B

No slow mo of the pecan cracking machine!? I thought that would have been incredible to see. Though not much space to get the high-speed camera in and lots of debris + getting in peoples way who are trying to work, so I can see why maybe you didn't.

Daniel Ryan

How can we Patrons purchase pecans from Frank?

Leverett H

Destin, when you're at the Barber do you just show them a picture of a peach or how does that go down?

James Heuberger

Beautiful video as always, Destin.

Great verse with the video today.

Timothy Pitcock

I really like these "how its done" videos, highlighting the engineering behind farming and industry. I would love to see you in a steel foundry or float glass factory. I have a farmer friend who used GPS and specialized planter equipment to plant corn mazes. It's amazing.

Its awesome, used to see it ever year living in Southern New Mexico! Amazing video!

F.N. Photography

Awesome video Destin. Also, thanks for including the KiwiCo boxes for older kids. I just bought the 3 month Maker Crate subscription for my 12 year old. She'll love it! And I loved saving some money with your code. Thanks for quality videos that are educational! Keep it up!

Very interesting. I would like to have seen some slow-mo of that drum that holds the nuts in the cracking process. Nevertheless, this was a really good video. Thanks

KC

"There's no squirrels here!" LOL thats fantastic.

Travis Macie

that high speed footage from the tractor was awesome 🇺🇸

Mrgunsngear

I grew up at Hepzibah Childrens Home in Macon GA. There was a pecan orchard and we would sit out there and pick up 2 nuts then squeeze, the weaker shell cracks so we could eat the nut. Great trip down memory lane. Thanks.

Timothy Pitcock

Fun and interesting video. I would have liked to see the mechanical cracker working at the end of the video captured with the high speed camera.

Rick Corbitt

The best! Can I buy directly from this farmer?

Done with a conventional combine and an all crop head.

Arcy

Awesome video. I always wondered about the process. Would be interesting to see how the process works for sunflower seeds.

Always interesting to see the different machines that other parts of the industry get to use.

Arcy

pe-cahn for me, incase it's regional I live in Illinois.

The elasticity of wood is kind of amazing. And you say that Frank said the trees he shakes actually grow better after? I literally went from one big question to two on tree shakers now! And I had no idea pecans came in several different varieties. Now I know which one to get!

How do you all pronounce pecan? Do you say A: "pe-cahn" or B: "pee-can"? I'm A and am from Alabama

Ryan Marks

What a great treat to drink my coffee to. Pecans have always been in my family, but nothing like your dad's story!
