I can't help but think that whatever regulation facebook (or lobbyist written, 'performed' by government) will only help facebook and ensure that no-one else can come along and 'disrupt' facebook by being better.

99% of what's out there is BS. I have lived over sixty years missing the 1% "genuine stuff" that's out there. Maybe if folks pay more attention to what's RIGHT HERE instead of what's OUT THERE society wouldn't be a screwed up as it is now.

Trouble is that by ignoring everything on these social media sites is that the people trying to manipulate you still win, because you won't see the genuine stuff that's out there

I've had EVPN since you first mentioned it a year or so ago. I found it to be pretty good but it doesn't work with MS Office Live, Amazon, etc. Just to name a few. I've asked them about it and they say they're working on it.

My protection against FB (I call it BS Book) is simple. Ignore anything I might read there. Same with Twitter or any other social media out there.

I'm glad you've reached out to Reddit. In the last 6 months I have dropped Facebook and Reddit filled the void. I'm still fairly new to it and would love to be more aware of its dangers. Thanks for another excellent thought-provoking and interesting video, Destin. I'm an advertiser on Facebook. This was very helpful for me. Now I understand why I sometimes need to jump through (small) hoops to get a new add approved. It's good to know that there are real people working to make social networking better for us all.

I really like the part about being too quick to regulate. I'm very much not against regulation, but political reactions to social media tend to not think about all the ways that people use it. For example, Facebook's real identity policy ended up hurting vulnerable, and minority groups on the platform, by making them choose between being exposed to potential abusers, or leaving the platform.

Of course people are trying to manipulate all of us. That is a given. All of the news media is trying to influence us. All advertising is trying to manipulate your purchasing decisions (TV, radio, print, internet). All Politicians try to manipulate voters to get elected. The important thing is to recognize the fact that you are being manipulated and use your best judgement before you make any decisions or take action.
