Patron Show May 2025 - Disco, Sweden, Future of Games Coverage...

UNLISTED YOUTUBE LINK: https://youtu.be/bC8_-8TYQbg

Hey folks,

It's been a weird week in the world of games coverage so a sizable chunk of this month's Patron Show is dedicated to my musings on the future of the games reporting and what, if anything, we can do about it.

There's also loads of project updates, some chat about con appearances later this year, some preservation stuff, and a bunch more. Chapters below!

00:00 - Intro
02:03 - Dwarf Fortress & Disco Elysium
05:23 - [clip] Disco Elysium
07:28 - Machine Games Docs
12:12 - SECRET TAPE PROJECT
15:18 - QuakeCon, PAX West, SXSW Australia
17:49 - Games Coverage...

If you've got any feedback or questions stick them in the comments below. Thank you so much for supporting us.

If you're going to shit, maybe it's time to get back into the shit?

NoClip 2025: Taking a big ol' shit on video games. The party isn't over Danny, it's just at your house now. People are latching on to Noclip because y'all are still doing killer work. While I'd also consider this the true end of Giant Bomb, I'm with you in that it became a different thing altogether once Brad, Vinny, Alex, and ultimately Jeff left. What you've continued to do is reminiscent of GB's arc, except you're actually 100% independent; you've helped shift what it means to tell stories about video games in the same way GB pioneered video content in games. Don't lose that spark. This is a great time for a shit. On a related note, and I realize you probably couldn't share here, but maybe you can hit up Gerstmann about trying to do more on the journalistic end of things? He's been talking about it for years now. This might be a good a time as any for a catalyst. <>

As a working parent of a 6 year old, my free time is precious as you know too!! So im very particular how i spend that time and noclip is my no.1 games related content provider. Also as far as noclip's future is concerned: remember Danny, if you build it, they will come..

I've been here when it started, and I will be here until it ends, and I strongly believe /noclip is far away from that. The Crewcast is one of my favorite gaming podcasts as you guys focus on details and titles, many times missed anywhere else. It is a show on its own out there, I think.

God bless everyone enjoying and waiting for the Disco Elysium doc, but I just can't get over the fact that the team openly simped Lenin and Stalin. A big no no from me.

Three big too wordy points come to mind with the future of a Noclip side project: 1) I love the podcast, I've watched just about every crewcast video except the fat sessions, and I would absolutely throw some money at a second Patreon to help fund more of that kind of stuff 2) That being said, I do hope that this would focus more on the fun of games, gaming culture, gaming essays, that kind of stuff. Basically in line with what the channel has already been. Journalism is a slow, tedious process for which video in particular is not very well suited / timely. I understand it's a devastating blow that some of these major gaming publications have gone down, but there have been other small smaller startups like Aftermath and Gamefile and others that have cropped up and are gaining followers. And even when one big media ship goes down, another is generally built from the ruins ( IGN to Minnmax and Escapist to Second Wind) 3) I fully understand the desire to keep the main channel ad free, because this is about gaming preservation and documentation, but I think it's more than reasonable to have basic YouTube ads turned on for a side channel so it's not quite as dependent on the Patreon

I know that alcohol and medication is never good. I'd give up on alcohol if you need medication. Usually what gets me going is focusing on my passions. Those are what make me most happy. Cheers to passions and what we love the most in the whole multiverse! And cheers to those who are passionate about gaming!
