The Design of Dredge - Noclip Documentary

Hey everyone!

We're back at it again with the indie games. It's a sickness. We see an interesting new indie game and we immediately want to film a doc about it. Be it Immortality, Pentiment (indie by nature, at least!), The Axis Unseen or Vampire Survivors - we've spent a lot of the past 12 months jumping into the design of some of the most interesting games from smaller teams.

We continue this work with our deep dive (it's impossible not to do aquatic puns, believe me) into DREDGE - the cosmic horror fishing game released last year. We were originally set to interview the devs at GDC but as my surgery cut much of that week's activities short, we decided to do these interviews remotely. Thankfully the team at Black Salt Games bought brand new webcams and mics for the project, and even gave us access to years worth of development footage. We coupled all of this with some filming gout on the Pacific Coast to make a densely packed video which breaks down the development of the game from several angles.

Massive thanks to Jeremy for taking the lead on the edit before passing it off to me. He also did a great job on our filming (we should have some outtakes from that for Patrons soon). Frank did a great job on the gameplay as ever and Jesse even jumped in last minute to give us some neat motion graphics for an early segment. A real team effort this one. All made possible by our incredible patrons. So thank you for supporting our work.

We're hard at work on a bunch of other docs - but keep yours eyes open for the Patron show where we'll be showing off some early clips. I recorded it while at QuakeCon this past weekend - so you'll also get to hear what myself and Frank were up to then.

In the meantime, enjoy the doc and let us know what you think!

The joy of dancing around like a mad man on a foggy pebble beach ๐Ÿ˜‚ Must have been one of those "How is this my job?" days.

Simon Mills

Amazing stuff! Well done with the stand ups, they look perfectly Dredge-y. (Also top-notch eyebrows.)

Thanks! It's one of the official screenshots but I did the typography on it and messed around with color/composition a wee bit.

Around the bay area there is a crazy marine layer that comes in most of the year - it's why San Francisco is so cool in the summer, for August it honesty feels like late Winter there. So we waited a few weeks until the fog started to roll in up here in the counties just north of SF and made sure to film in the evening when it's most prevalent. It's nuts, you go from 90C sunny to 100% fog in like 3 minutes when you drive out to the coast. Jeremy also did an awesome job filming it. I colored this one myself actually. I had a certain look I wanted to get that was a bit grainy and washed out. Myself and Jeremy are doing a lot of role reversal these days, as he edited most of this one!

Fair! I think the Irish fisherman came out of me in this one. I had considered editing them out but made the call not to. Appreciate the feedback.

Loved it, but wish there was less swearing. I got this game for my niece and was considering showing her this, but the F-bombs are making me less inclined to do so.

Was it really that perfectly foggy out on the coast, or is Jeremy just a colour grading genius? (Both things can be true.)

Riccardo Margiotta

That thumbnail is great. Is it in game? I haven't played or watched yet.

Josh LaBaw

I appreciate the round of thanks you gave to the team, but you left an important question unanswered: who did your costume?

Max Goldstein

I hope people read this before watching the doc, hah

THROW IT BACK!
