Community Q&A - Call for Questions

Hi Patrons,

It's been a few seasons since our last Patron Q&A so I thought with all the docs and podcasts and videos we've been putting out it's probably a good time to open the doors to some inquiry!

Bit of a twist on this one though - we're going to answer these questions on a public video on Noclip Crew.

Only patrons get to ask questions though so if you'd like to get into the video please leave your questions in the comments below.

Ask about anything; projects, funding, goals, podcasts, crew, editing, covid, studios, games, whatever.

Thanks in advance!

- Danny

this FF14 doc photo is unrelated I just find it funny

I'm probably in the minority on this one, but when it comes to podcasts, I feel like there is a shortage of what I would consider an "audio version of what you do with your docs." I realize that the video format is better to show and tell the story of how these games are made, etc. but I'm a hobbyist game dev and I would love to be able to listen to a tight, well-produced podcast about the "story" of how a game got made. There are plenty of podcasts where a dev is interviewed where the format is basically just...here's an interview with a dev. They talk about their background and maybe their new game for a bit, but that's not what your docs do. They tell the stories of how games are made. Have you guys considered or would you consider doing this type of story-telling in podcast form (or at least focus on a game dev/game culture podcast that isn't necessarily a general interview with a dev)?

How do you feel Noclip has aged? Been a patron since 2018 (grandfathered in $3 tier sorry XD) and it has been amazing to see how you guys have grown. Lots of questions on the topic. Feel free to pick all, none, or anything in between. 1. Do you feel like you have stayed true to your original intent when you started noclip? Has the goal changed, or do you just see yourself going after it in a slightly different way now? 2. You now have 6 Youtube channels, a video game, Patreon + discord communities, and all this with only ~4 regular employees/contractors...how the heck do you guys manage it all? 3. Do you intend to keep expanding staff if possible, or is there a small team size you want to hit in order to facilitate a type of filming that only ~2 people just cant do? 4. (Sorry if this one is a sore spot) Do you see yourself doing anything like the Hades Blu-ray again after seeing how much effort it has taken? Would you have even made the Hades Blu-ray if you knew what you know now? Huge fan guys, looking forward to many more years.

Actual question: Have you ever considered doing a doc on Humble Bundle, their charity work, a specific game, their publishing label, etc? Less of a question: Anybody going to the game awards show at the Hollywood Bowl? Lmk, and I'll buy you an overpriced beer :)

Veltis

What's the deal with restreams/reacts of your content? Do you prefer or require streamers reach out to you if they want to show your content on something like a Twitch stream?

Adam Bryzak (BakerStaunch)

Have you ever thought about doing something on the era of 2000's flash games? A lot of games history, there.

Oliver Cant

How are you all doing? Also, have you considered doing/is there a wishlist for some stuff in the UK some time, maybe just stay here for 2 weeks or something. I think that docs with people like Introversion Software or Weather Factory would be super interesting.

Dark Insanities

Would you ever consider having a wedding registry type list for tech items or trips the crew wants to save up for? Also is there a possibility for a kickstarter for stunt derby or will that interfere with finding a publisher? I would just love to find other ways to funnel some more money your way and I’m sure I’m not alone.

Mark Rojas

With Stunt Derby and Jayne Dev you've all been exploring development from a different angle. Would you ever consider hosting a game jam and producing Noclip Crew content on the process and results?

Kevin Thompson

What is the one thing you really want to do with Noclip or always wish you could do, but for whatever reason say funding, available time or something else, you haven’t been able to do?

Graham Innes

gran turismo 7 just informed me that rally racing originated in the middle ages, where knights would race back to their lords. i think NoClip should make a horse rally racing game after stunt derby, it's a natural progression. thoughts?

As the de facto source of documentaries on immersive sims, when is Noclip interviewing Nightdive about the System Shock remake ;-) ? They clearly have a deep love and understanding of what makes this kind of game tick, so it would be fantastic to get the inside story of their (relatively) small team's long journey from Kickstarter to final product. There's got to be a story behind the switch to Unreal Engine (from Unity) and essentially rebooting the project half way through.

Have you every considered doing a video on a localised gaming industry like for an American city or a country with a small gaming market? I'd be interested to see if there is a story to tell in how the presence of game dev studios could change the culture of a city or how the culture of a country influences what kind of games come out of it. I mainly say this as an Australian where a lot of the major studios collapsed and were replaced by a bunch of indies in their place.

Are there any plans to do the podcast in person again or is that something you even want?

zesumat

I remember on a recent podcast episode there was some interest expressed in doing a Newgrounds doc. I know this was just in casual conversation, but do you think flash games are a topic you'd be likely to seriously pursue? I would absolutely love to see anything you guys would put together on the topic. A Newgrounds video would be great, but even more than that I'd be fascinated to see interviews with the developers of some of the indie successes of the flash world. People like Alan Rawkins (creator of Dolphin Olympics), Ferry Halim of Orisinal, or the N/N++ team. Thanks for everything you do! Can't wait for the Immortality doc. Cheers!

Eric Hesson

Who's your interviewee white whale? Any docs that you once planned on doing and didn't for whatever reason, and how do you feel about those now? Frustrated at a missed opportunity, happy you got to see the story develop more before working on it, etc?

Brainfreeze

What are your thoughts on how remote work has changed things, and when/whether things will go back to normal? It's kind of crazy now watching an old Double Fine documentary where everybody was sad when their intern had to work remotely, and they wouldn't get to work together as closely anymore. Now almost everybody is remote. In a creative environment like game development, has the remote switch had a lot of repercussions? In terms of issues with creative communication, or just feeling isolated during crunch time, so there's less of that "we're all in the trenches together" feeling.

TCBD

what's a genre of videogame that you have never gotten on with and are convinced you never will?

Casey Holloway

Hey folks, I have recently watched PsychOdyssey, after you guys mentioned it during a podcast. I assume that by now you have watched the whole thing as well. I'd like to hear your thoughts on it. Cheers, Gabe

Gabe

Hi Danny and the rest of the Noclip Crew. I was recently rewatching some old Random Encounter episodes you did together with Johnny Chiodini. You guys always had such a blast. I saw he started his own Patreon a while ago were he mostly does Let's Plays. Any chance of you pairing up again for a Let's Play, or him as a special guest on the podcast perhaps? Just to talk videogames. You probably already thought of this before, but by inviting other people with their own videogames related Patreon on the podcast you could introduce Noclip to their Patreons and vice versa. Doing some cross-pollination?

Has there been any thought to do documentaries on events like Quake Con or MAGFest. Quake Con has always been a bit of a legendary event in my mind. Growing up seeing photos in magazines showcasing a sea of CRT's always had me wondering how in the hell does someone coordinate an event this large, with that much equipment? As for MAGFest, I've always felt that it's a special blend of event with it's focus on games of all types having a place, a wonderful indie game section full of experimental ideas, and it's massive video game music concert showcase. I've known some of the people that created it as well as some who have ben to every MAGFest ever, known as "Lumberjacks", and it always seemed like a very diverse event with an interesting path to permeance in the convention world.

Hey guys, avid watcher and a big fan of everyone’s work, I believe it was at the end of the Noclip podcast episode 128 that turned in to a mini production meeting about the upcoming immortality doc, which speaking for myself I found fantastically interesting. My question is, would you ever consider recording and releasing some fly on the wall style videos of production meetings or similar? I found it so interesting to get a glimpse behind the curtain and to hear the creative process take place. It could be once a doc has been released as an additional content/making of X doc to avoid spoilers etc. Please keep up the fantastic work you all do!

William Simpson

Hey Danny and The Boys, With your talent, access and resources, you have the potential to make some very interesting documentaries about gaming that traditional outlets can't really do, like stuff involving trends in gaming, or games journalism altogether, or even what People Make Games did recently with their interviews of the ZA/UM factions ahead of their trial. Are there unconventional things you guys are interested in experimenting with that aren't covering individual games or studios?

The Nth Review

Hey NoClip, In terms of future docs, are there any chances to get some love for original Fallout? There should be some good stories behind the scenes - starting off based on a tabletop role-playing game system, having bunch of spin-offs and cancelled projects. And being quoted as source of inspiration to games such as Deus Ex, Metro 2033 and even Weird West.

Maybe this is a question that lot of people will disagree, but have you ever thought of having ads on the podcast?(maybe on the free version) I’ve been really enjoying the podcast in the past few months and although yes, ads are annoying, I wouldn’t mind them if that income would make a significant difference for the team.

Christian Quinones

Hello to the NoClip team! In light of the fact we're in the midst of Showcase season between Playstation, Summer Games Fest, Xbox+Bethesda, and Ubisoft Forward to name the most high-profile presentations, have you ever considered doing a doc on the process of the creation of these types super-commercials, from curating what goes into such a show, the fan expectations before and after these streams, and what, if any, feedback process these companies have after producing what many consider to be the biggest expected news-blasts of the year? Granted, I understand such a doc couldn't really be on an upcoming Showcase, but perhaps E3 briefings past on how Sony secured the deals to announce Final Fantasy VII Remake and Shenmue III's kickstarter, or perhaps Xbox getting to have Keanu Reeves on stage to name a couple examples. Just something I've been curious about over the years, but regardless, keep up the awesome work across the board! Thanks for reading if you have and have a wonderful day!

Brandon K Gann

This is more of a "Goals" comment than a question. I've been revisiting some of your guest appearances on other people's podcasts. There you said you started Noclip - among other things - because games press interviews of developers were becoming so bad you wanted to do better, and give people good interviews, good stories about developers from an independent source. Lately you've been saying there'll be less of those (bigger) traditional docs, because publishers have (re)discovered them as a marketing tool. I get that you're trying not to rehash their work, but I'd always watch your work before theirs, especially since you're so good at explaining important details or highlighting people, that are seldom the focus of PR produced works. I really hope you're not gonna shelve the idea of doing big single developer docs just because other people do them, too. We came for YOUR docs.

Björn Vahle

Hi Noclip crew! Would you guys ever do a documentary on a game console? Something like the development of the steam deck would be interesting. Is that even possible or is there too much red tape around that? Keep up the good work!

Michael Rinne

How do you balance playing games you're enjoying while also playing new games on top of balancing projects/real life stuff? Do you just keep a list of games to get to but don't have time for currently?

Korme

1. Have you ever considered doing a behind the scenes doc of a disaster release (eg. gollum or redfall)? I know it's likely out of bounds, but it would be interesting to see how that kind of thing happens 2. not a question but the System Shock remake fucking rules 3. Any standout games released in the last year or two that you think are underrated or flew under the radar?

breadguy

I got a few, but I'll stick with this one because it's related to my other passion in life, that being music: Would you ever look at doing some sort of doc that focuses on music & sound design and how it plays a role in selling immersion? Perhaps interviewing a few key composers and talking about how they got into it, what it involves, and maybe how the music industry and games industry interact with each other.

Oliver Cant

Also, any chance at all Nintendo will talk to you guys about anything?

Pocket Vinyl

How do you feel about your docs from the first couple years? Do they seem more amatuerish or embarrassing or anything? I think they all look great still, personally, but I know sometimes as an artist it can be tough to look back on old work and see only mistakes.

Pocket Vinyl

Any updates on the Hades blu-ray?
