Let's Make Some Horns! (and chit-chat)

H'YELLOOOO, with my upcoming convention... uh... upcoming, I wanted to make some horns that I'm going to need for my SFX panel.

Figured I'd show ya how I'm making them as well as a little chit-chat about being a guest at a convention, mental health, and what I've been up to the past couple weeks!

I'll be sure to post the finished product on the patreon after they're done! LOVE YA!

Let's Make Some Horns! (and chit-chat)

These would make very nice pumpkin stems.

Stephanie DePriest

Photos are the same here in Arizona for phoenix fan fusion. Although Billie Piper did give me a hug when I came to her crying. They had to let other people go before me when I was crying in my photo for Christopher Eccleston. But the autographs are great a lot of the celebrities are able to talk at here. Like I had lovely conversations with Ashley Ekstein and James Arnold Taylor about Star Wars and Doctor Who.

Sarah Roop-Rosales

Oh convention photos… all the money and only a few seconds. I know the pain.

Jen

Appreciate your insights on the photo and autograph experiences at cons. Seeing the four hobbits in a couple months and knowing a bit more about what to expect is nice. Also have no idea what to do for the photo so ahhhhhhhh.

Silly Ellie

I wished to be there at Comic-Con, but I am from the other side of the ocean (France Paris Baguette 🥖). I’ve been on this patreon for a little while now, Iove everything you do, thank you for sharing content with us 🫶🏻 You’re the best !

Calypso Joyer

I just finished watching and catching up with every Patreon video so now to catch up on your YouTube channel and I'm golden!! 💚

The Haunted Pirate

I love your content! You inspired me to start sewing and it has turned into my favorite creative outlet! So, thank you for being you!

Stephanie Klassen

Sounds like the conventions are pretty much the same everywhere. Similar in in Colorado anyway. Any chance you'll be doing a con here? We have a tiny one in Ft. Collins and then a pretty big one in Denver where I met David Tennant once.

Casey Pratten

I know nothing about cosplay conventions so that was interesting to hear your experience. I would be curious to see a video from you just sharing your film background, how you got into it and what kind of equipment/set-up you use. Seems like it would be easy and I would find it interesting as an amateur video-maker myself. Just a thought!

Ann Tilley

The photo ops is so true!! I did a photo with all four hobbits in Denver and it was over so fast I felt really cheated. So I went ahead and bought autographs which was way better since they actually had the time to talk to me while signing my book! Fun Fact: Billy Boyd does book binding as a hobby.

Liz

I met Adam Savage last spring and I had something very personal to share (how being public about his hearing loss literally changed my life). I felt *so* awkward and almost cried, but he was so gracious. In terms of pushing you a celebrity meet through like cattle... Neil Gaiman came to Harvard Square to do a reading from Ananzi Boys. During the signing, everyone in line was standing a respectful distance from his table and from one another. He chided the event organizer about how much time was being wasted (the line ran all the way around the church we were in), stood up, and started herding people closer. He was signing books like an assembly line, speaking very briefly with each person. Then we got to the head of the line. He looked up, saw my partner, and starting asking him how he'd been. I was introduced. There was a short conversation. They're old friends and it had been a while. The event organizer was completely freaking out, but he ignored her. I felt badly that she was in a lose-lose situation.

I purchased an embroidery sewing machine second hand from the viking store buy my house. Best self splurge I've every done. My sewing machine was always giving me problems. I'm excited to see what you get to do with your machine

Courteney Mazet

Same here. I was Zatanna at a comic con and pulled a rolling bag behind me. It was decorated with my character name and served as a carry bag for all my purchases. But it definitely helped with boundaries and personal space issues. No one could get up close behind me. I was polite in tight areas and carried it in my hand if needed.

Claudine Wooley

I’m so happy that I joined the fellowship. You’ve been a huge inspiration to me during this past year. I’ve started building props and making costumes each week. I’ve pulled some all nighters to get my projects done and I binge watch your videos to keep me going. I’m new to prop making and I love to see you think thru the process and problem solve. I recently started my own YouTube channel and I have to give you credit for inspiring me in so many ways. Sometimes in the background…your YouTube videos are playing …I think it’s fun to leave that in. I’d love to meet you one day so I could tell you in person how much I appreciate what you’ve done for me and the creatives out there. Thank you!

Claudine Wooley

Alas, I suppose that makes sense. I hope you have fun at Katsucon, regardless! It was one of my favorite cons back in the day.

Weyr

You should do an awkward prom pose with Hayden! He'd totally be down and it would be so cute!

Mama Turtle

every time you talk about star wars costumes i keep meaning to ask if you've ever heard of the padawan's guide. it's a really good resource for accurate star wars cosplay. i remember when i was like fourteen i really wanted to make padmé's picnic dress and (brimming with VAST overconfidence in my nonexistent sewing abilities) looked at all the stuff on there and went: ah, nope. so it's great to be an adult now and see someone actually making it. wish fulfillment moment!

zanna zannolin

I love that your description of the nerves of meeting celebrities at conventions also describes how I felt when I met you at Dragon Con!

Karen Kettells

Rachel, I need to step away from Patreon for a bit, but this does not mean forever! I absolutely love watching your creative process for everything, and I adore your personality. You are luminous. I’ll be back at some point, but I needed to say that it’s not through anything on here, just life needs me to step back a bit :)

Bethany Aitchison

Having worn fairy wings in crowded places I can confirm that it can be a struggle. However the Ever After wings are soft-ish depending on how you make them so it might be slightly less terrible to hit people with them. I also feel like I get a little more personal space if I have a big wingspan in a crowd. Not sure about convention etiquette though. Is it rude to unapologetically take up space?

Natasha Sawicki

I only do autographs now because of the treatment you get in photo-ops. You really are herded in like cattle and you get zero time to converse with the celebs. With autographs, I can actually talk to the celebs (and sometimes even make a complete fool of myself in front of Mark Sheppard or John Barrowman lol) and feel like I actually got my money's worth. That being said, I did get a photo with Zachary Levi once with friends and we opted for awkward family photo and it is the greatest thing ever 😂 he even asked that we tag him in it if we shared it so that he could see it 😂

Maggie Stewart

Soooooo it sounds like you’ll be embroidering some Maksy merch for your patrons soon…. 😍

Ashley Quam

I totally feel ya on the photo ops with celebrities being so much like herding cattle in and out of a pen as quickly as possible. Almost every single one I've taken has been like that. The one exception was Lana Parilla (Regina/The Evil Queen from Once Upon a Time), who limited her photo ops, I think, and was really open to just chatting for a minute or two with each fan or fan group that came up to her. I wore my Evil Queen cosplay (the long, velvet red riding coat with the cool cavalier hat), and I was so nervous when I came up to her, I just asked, "Would you like to hold my heart?" (I had a glowing prop.) She was so sweet, and did a cool pose with me, and then I started walking away, thinking I needed to, but I noticed she wanted to say something about my cosplay/ask me about it or something. But I had already walked away! I regret not staying for even just for a minute or two to talk to her.

Amanda B Cook

good to know!!

Rachel Maksy

totally cute!!

Rachel Maksy

yAY!! :) See you then!! Yeah I hate how they run them, but who knows! The celeb might kinda fight back on the time limit (I can see Cary being super sweet about it)

Rachel Maksy

Yay! :)

Rachel Maksy

hahahaha it also scares the pants off me

Rachel Maksy

Hahaha we could cry TOGETHER

Rachel Maksy

🥰🥰

Rachel Maksy

okay totally noted, kinda what i figured hahaha. i'll save 'em for maybe a guesting opportunity

Rachel Maksy

omg don't make me CRYYYY

Rachel Maksy

hahaha i assessed the danger and it was passable from my arm swings 😂

Rachel Maksy

🥰🥰🥰🥰

Rachel Maksy

I think i'll do a little 'testing it out' video! I have to get it unboxed rather quickly and off-camera to get padme done in time hahahaha

Rachel Maksy

you are so sweet 😭😭😭

Rachel Maksy

Hahaha aww no worries that sounds so exciting!!

Rachel Maksy

hahahaha

Rachel Maksy

Ughhh so unfortunate!

Rachel Maksy

Unfortunately I'm wary of doing meetups in spaces that don't have a level of security. I don't think anything would ever happen but it's a 'you never know' kinda thing 😖

Rachel Maksy

eee YAY :)

Rachel Maksy

hahaha just casually smacking everyone

Rachel Maksy

omg I totally believe that, they both sound so sweet

Rachel Maksy

yESS do eeet!! I wanna make some for myself now lol

Rachel Maksy

🥰🥰🥰🥰🥰

Rachel Maksy

Thank you my love!!!

Rachel Maksy

I hope so!! Will definitely help with projects I've avoided because of embroidery hahaha

Rachel Maksy

I think I'll definitely do a little 'testing it out' video! I don't foresee having to use software, at least in the beginning, the machine I got has a ton of in-machine editing software ande I'll probably be purchasing a lot of pre-made deisgns!

Rachel Maksy

Heehehe thank you my love!

Rachel Maksy

Heeehehe I'm very excited to embroider EVERYTHING lol

Rachel Maksy

AWW NOOO I would've loved to say hi to you!!! I hope I get to run into you again some day! Maybe this year's dragon con?!

Rachel Maksy

🥰🥰🥰🥰

Rachel Maksy

Thank you my love!!!

Rachel Maksy

Eeee yay!!!! Hahaha YUP I feel that

Rachel Maksy

YESSS hahahaha

Rachel Maksy

🥰🥰🥰🥰

Rachel Maksy

ooo smart!

Rachel Maksy

okay that's kiiinda what i figured hahaha. ooo noted!! thank you!

Rachel Maksy

Eee yay!! :)

Rachel Maksy

I love all of your cosplay content! These horns turned out so cool, and I'm excited to see the finished Padme look.

InAnotherCatsle

I will see you Thursdaayyyyyy 🤩 But also I relate to the anxiety of meeting celebs. I have a photo/autograph scheduled with Neil Newbon and I can’t fathom how I’m going to form words

Ash Anderson

This was so fun and relaxing to watch! Also don’t worry about the horns being a perfect match; fwiw I used to work at an animal sanctuary and I promise that goat, sheep, and cow horns are “siblings, not twins” lol. So if they are asymmetrical it’s authentic.

Veronica Finnegan

I'm so nervous and excited to see you in person. <-totally awkward

Melissa Fox-Austin

Those horns look great. Next time you do something like them maybe temporarily glue a stick to the bottom so you can hold it without interfering with the horn itself. Love these videos, I am so glad I join your Patreon.

Susan L S Smith

These horns look so cool! I'd happily welcome more cosplay and D&D content. For any new Baldur's Gate fans, I'd highly recommend Critical Role and Dimension 20 ☺️

Effy

Yay! I love crafting and chit chat!

Jenny Rose

Just a heads up for the embroidery process - it can shrink your finished project. If you cut then embroider, it can make the piece too small so it’s often best to embroider on the fabric then cut out your piece.

Jennifer Harlow

Hey, I’ve been to katzucon like 14 times now. you may not want to bring the wings it’s crowded and sometimes hard to move around. Also I would highly recommend you go get some cheeky Nandos with the lads, they have one there. It gets crazy busy but, if you can go Thursday night, it’s not as bad. Their sangria is really good.

Nicola Godman

I’m so excited to see you at MegaCon!! My teenage cosplayer is going to love learning this for hers.

Amanda Partilla

Doug Jones and Alan Tudyk were so kind and gracious with me during Con photo ops, despite all the chaos and carnival barking. Especially Doug Jones, what an absolute gem of a human! I always feel bad for how rushed and handled they are, despite wanting more interaction with their fans.

Excellent Boiled Potato of Kaer Morhen

I want to make some for the next ren fair!

Skye

So cool to hear how Patreon is helping you further your skills and projects!! The projects you clearly enjoy/are long held dreams are honestly my favorite ones to watch, along with the very chaotic ones like the discoball dress!

Scorpio Amber

So fun! Thank you for chatting with us—I hope the expo goes well and everything gets finished!

Amber Rhodes

Looking forward to the upcoming Padme content. Getting the embroidery machine will open more avenues of cosplay and sewing hijinks.

Matilda G.

Have fun with the embroidery machine, I love mine. I'd love to see an unboxing video as I like being nosey at others new toys. Not wishing to make you panic, but if you think the machines are pricey, you should see the price of the full deign software. Although there are online options, that are pay-per-month, that are more "affordable".

Alexander

I believe in you Rachel 😊 Thank you for being you!

Shayna Adams

Yay! Love the horns and so excited to see what you make with your new embroidery machine! 😍❤️

Nerdyfae

It's so funny that you've gotten tongue-tied/overwhelmed by celebrity encounters, because you ARE one of my overwhelmed celebrity encounters 🤣 This year at DragonCon I felt awful because I tried to say hi and you were clearly overwhelmed yourself - trying to find where to go to pick up badges and being mobbed by 1 or 2 other people simultaneously, and I just sort of awkward turtled my way away rather than pile on. Your video is a great reminder that cons are fun but awkward situations, everyone kind of gets that, but that it is worth the time to tell people they matter to you, so long as you can pick the right moment to do it. Anyway, I doubt I'll ever bump into you again, but I love having your videos on Friday nights - you definitely brighten my day and bring humor to my life. I appreciate everything you do to entertain us fellow nerds.

Elizabeth Saltmarsh

they'll just have to make way for you and your wings at the convention, since you'll be their Princess.

Andy Pucko

I’m beyond jazzed that I get to come see you at MegaCon!! You got this with Padme, it’s looking amazing!! 💛✨💛

Jasmin

Would you ever consider doing a patron meetup? I'm local to Katsucon but don't intend to go. I'd love to get the chance to meet up for a group lunch or something, though. :) Might also be a nice chance to get away from the crowds for a bit.

Weyr

Yes - all cons do the same thing with photos with celebrities. I went to the con at Philadelphia and had my picture with Michael J Fox and it was totally a "push everyone through". I wish I could meet you at a con!

Pidge Groce

You need a secret handshake, or password for your Patreon subscribers... I dunno, like you say Sexy, we say Gandalf or some nonsense like that.

Jayne Hicks

I wouldn't worry about the wings. They'll get crushed. You'll be too worried about them to properly "swan about." As for the cosplay stuff, you do you, darlin'. We're just along for the ride.

Jayne Hicks

I hope she does! I want one, one day lol and it be fun to see hers and how it works.

Samantha E.

Rachel! I have the perfect name for you Victorian coffee shop. “The cursed cafe” it would be so cute with your Victorian vibe.

Samantha E.

I cannot express how much knowing you would be there made me want to jump down there for the Con... except I'm moving into my new place that weekend... but it was a close thing! Sad to miss out, but hope you have have!

Britny Norbutus

I can confirm that you are indeed an inspiration and I hope the upcoming cons fill you with the warm fuzzies.

Kaye Barnes

Will you do an unboxing of your embroidery machine?

Kaye Barnes

also, thank you for sharing how you are doing! your mental health is way more important than the content you post so make sure to do what you love and have fun-- we will still be here!

Beebe Doe

So excited to meet you at con! I’m coming on Sunday!! Also, that’s good to know about the celeb photo ops. I’ve never done one before and I’m going to be getting one with Neil Newbon and Cary Elwes. I was trying to figure out a whole bunch of stuff I wanted to say to them, but now I won’t be blindsided when they herd me through quickly lol 😂

Laurel Boss

I love hearing about the cosplay stuff. It's not something that I do lots of, but I think it looks really fun and having a peek into how the process of it looks for you is cool.

Anna O.

Fun project, I should try that sometime! Good luck on the Padme costume, RL scares the pants off me so anyone who goes for it has my deepest respect.

Heather Hofshi

To be fair I would probably also a) cry b) freeze c) stop functioning if I ever met you at a con hahaha 😂 sadly I am a west coast human so that’s not likely to happen for awhile. Best of luck with the embroidery machine! They can be really fun ☺️

Janna

Thanks for putting this up! And hey, buy the tools you need.

BrainGuy63

Rachel struggling to talk in the intro is me trying to write my essays for school recently

Beebe Doe

Don’t wear wigs to katsucon is they are super fragile! It’s insanely crowded in the major gatherings areas, dealers and artists alleys. Especially artists alley: the aisle are usually pretty packed and narrow

Rosie

love this 🤍 wish I could be at the con and thank you in person for being a light when I needed it most

andyazcu

That coffee mug is as close to the edge as I am.😂 Hope you have an amazing time at the con! 🥰
