Ad-Free Episode...Birdsong Landscapes

Austin Miller runs Birdsong Landscapes, a native plant landscaping company and Natural History page based out of Southwest Ohio. In this episode we talk about continents as ecosystems, the natural history of Ohio, the Hopewell Culture and the Eastern Agirculture Complex, injecting native plant awareness into popular culture, lawn-killing, freshwater mussel diversity in Eastern North American rivers, vigilante-killing Bradford pears, hotricultural atrocities, feral pigs, the biosphere as a "living machine", and a lot more.

Enjoyed this one selfishly because of the Ohio history and discussion. Ohio isn't all bad I swear but could certainly use some work. Feel good about the state parks and nature preserves (also one okay National Park). Be cool to have Andrew (the Buckeye Botanist on insta) on if you haven't already...southern Ohio is hella cool. Gotta get off I-70 or I-71 to see anything worthwhile.

Conservation corps still exist and are managed in a variety of ways, I believe all through AmeriCorps. Generally, contract season laborers, training exists, pay is mostly shit, sometimes housing is available and growth opportunities can be difficult. You can gain experience without a degree and earn Segal awards to help pay for or back your education. Eat, sleep, shit in the field with a crew of randoms. I’ve done a variety of mechanical and herbicidal invasive treatments with partners. In my area tamarisk is a massive issue, and removal of it requires hand sawing and applying herbicide within 2 minutes of cutting. There’s been a release of tamarisk beetles and it appears to work well, different situation of course. It can be a shitty time especially if you don’t like various levels of labor, not sure how many folks would actually want to do the line of work. It’s absolutely some of the most rewarding work I’ve ever done.
