Movie Poster Sync (kodi/plex) Feature Inquiry

Hello Patreons!  I'm happy to say that develpment in April is progressing much smoother than we've had in the past.  We're focusing on bug fixes this month, and what we call 'quality of life' issues which are things to make the user experience smoother and the system more stable.

When we do get into features, one that we have an enormous amount of requests for has been to have movie posters 'sync' with systems such as Kodi or Plex.  The challenge here is we're not quite sure what that should look like.  Some of the users have pointed to movienow, but I'm unable to get a copy of that to see how it handled this (or multiple plex/kodi servers).  Some have mentioned movieposterapp which I'm investigating.  In the end, I am hoping that the community and those that care about this feature can help us understand the feature so we can scope and cost it and put it on our backlog.  Here's some of the questions we have that you can answer either below in comments, or directly to me via a message on here or via email at Joe@geek-toolkit.com

1) How would you like to see this implemented? if a movie is playing does it override the frame with the movie poster if the feature is enabled? Or does it play a folder of movie posters?

2) How are multiple kodi/plex servers handled? If you have two kodi machines in a house with one dynaframe, does one take precedence over the other?

3) What if there is no poster for the content? Should it show a movie poster folder and show random images? or 'no poster found?'

4) If you have the movienow app, can you share screenshots of the configuration?

5) Is Kodi/plex the big hitters, or is Jellyfin/embry the 'new hotness' for playing local movie content?

This request was sent to me by Lou to gather data.  No promise yet on what we can do, but we'd like to understand the desire and the feature so we can investigate more.

Thanks in advance!

Joe

There's not currently, though if you're in the discord and ask there I think QWK has a way to get it mounted. I should have a doc update here in a few days that has it as well. The mounting of the nas is currently outside of dynaframe...if you mount it into your pictures folder then any subfolders you have should show up in Dynaframe fairly easily. But getting it mounted can be a bit of a bear in linux. Are you using a nas there you can access through cifs/windows?

Having trouble setting up a NAS, I can't seem to get the file structure correct, I can ping my NAS but can't get mount the folder/drive. running Pi4(4GB) with April release. Is there a detailed description of how to do this? or could one be implemented?, like a background script when adding new file directory? Thanks for the help, love the project!

Thankyou so much, this has been relayed to Lou and he was excited because this gave him much of the data he needed to design and prototype. No promises yet, other than we'll make sure to find you when we're ready to beta test it :)

Hey Joe! Saw your post first thing this morning and I'm excited the team is gathering data on direct integration! For myself, I used MoviePosterApp for a bit, however, the app would delete or erase the config file, meaning I'd have to restart it a lot. I love the DF way of showing posters I want natively (even if it's not for movies), and then I liked their Plex integration on the local server. I've also dabbled in Posterr app. They've recently moved to a Docker only method, and I had lots of docker issues, so I'm running their old version sometimes. I actually use the localhost version on the web portal of DF if I'm feeling REALLY brave! Currently, I have both Plex and Emby but use Plex almost 100% of the time. My method with Dynaframe includes using Tautulli to use web hooks to send URLs to DF with data from Plex based on start/stop/pause/resume data. Tautulli has plex data from the local API connection including poster, title, etc. which is passable to DF. It works probably 90% of the time, but sometimes gets hangup or doesn't get a 'stop/pause' signal. I've talked about this in the discord group and the script is great, but a native integration would be probably that missing 10%. 1. This brings me to your first question, is that yes, I would love for the current playing poster to Override whatever on screen, and then resuming normal playlist functionality when the content is either paused/stopped. This is how I've currently set it up and how MPA did as well. 2. In the setup (Tautulli, Posterr, MPA), you choose the Libraries from the server you are connected to. The apps I've used before use a secure x-plex-token from a URL, meaning you're logged into a single server at a time (differentiated by ports). If someone has multiple Servers and not multiple libraries, they're probably not being efficient and are in a small percentage. In MPA, you also can set priority for Plex, Emby, etc. so it pulls whichever is higher as displayed. 3. All Plex and Emby content have posters or at least a screenshot of the media as data in the Plex API/webhook content. As far as I understand, this is not an option to be poster less. However, I would leave it to the Plex/Emby owner to make sure their library is up today. If they can handle DF posters, they should be able to ensure content scraping and/or custom posters are setup in Plex/Emby. 4. N/A 5. I have Plex and set it up for a few dozen external users. Same with my family, they can use it and love the simplicity and accessibility. Emby is something newer I'm testing, but the interface isn't as clean or familiar. I see value in both, however, Plex has always done right by me for the past 10+ years.
