The reason I think it's done so well is beyond the back story, is that we get the public face/Tsundere side the she presents as the cover for her insecurity, but then we get the inner monologue that shows the real Noelle being the complete opposite of that in some cases. That is also the basis if you think about it of her treating Asta the way she does, the whole insecurity and embarrassment she feels is still deeply rooted into how she her own family treated her. That lack of acknowledgement of from them, is making it difficult for her to acknowledge and be honest with her own feelings towards Asta.
