New poll! "My Hero" vs. "Bullet with Butterfly Wings"

We are who we are, and who we are is two podcasters who love '90s alt rock and could talk about it for days and days. So at last we take on two of the biggest of the mid-'90s rock bands and argue whether our hero is actually ordinary and whether our rage has done anything to free use from our cage. Vote now between the Foo Fighters' "My Hero" and Smashing Pumpkins' "Bullet with Butterfly Wings"!

“Despite all my rage I’m still just a rat in a cage” describes how I feel a lot of the time so voting BWBW!

NGL, I find this a weird match up choice just because the topic of the songs are so different -- My Hero is a more mature song about the heroism of the everyman; BWBW is all the melodrama of self-loathing. Anyway: I've personally always preferred BWBW because 1) I was a melodramatic emo kid with issues and 2) I find it more interesting as a song. Until I looked up the lyrics just now I couldn't have told you anything about My Hero past the line "there goes my hero"; the song just fades into the background. Meanwhile, BWBW -- I like the imagery, even if it's a little overwrought, I like the music, I like the relatively quiet "the world is a vampire" leading in to a loud and frenzied song, and yeah, I do actually enjoy the feeling of sing/screaming "despite all my rage, I am still just a rat in a cage".

I find both of these songs annoying. BWBW gets the vote for at least being interesting.

Still have to go with "Bullet with Butterfly Wings" on this, despite everything Billy Corgan has said and done to destroy his own legacy. Prefer to remember him back when he still had his hair, in his Lollapalooza and Homerpalooza days. But that chorus absolutely destroys every time, unedeniable in its awesomeness. It aged great. He didn't.

I get why you didn't go with Everlong, there is nothing that would make sense for a matchup that wouldn't just get stomped. Anyways My Hero all the way, that song kills live

Not gonna lie, even though the music is more interesting, "Despite all my rage I'm still just a rat in a cage" always sounded so lame to me that I couldn't get past it. I gotta give it to the Foo Fighters.

Billy Corgan has probably the least enjoyable voice (and dare I say, personality) of 90’s indie rock. Meanwhile, when Tenacious D needed someone to play a badass Devil who was intimidatingly good at rocking out, they turned to Dave Grohl. The man is an institution and he’s nice to his mom. There’s no contest here.
