NEW POLL! "Celebration" vs. "All Night Long (All Night)"

First off, our very special indie rock episode, "In the Aeroplane Over the Sea" vs. "The Book of Love," I thought it came out very well: https://open.spotify.com/episode/36U7YA8uyvC9M3n8iOMQPw?si=dBpu2uofQBecDW8q4WT3fQ

But in any case, back to the overplayed pop hits that is the bread-and-butter of this show. Please let us know which of the wedding-dance classics you prefer, Kool and the Gang's "Celebration" vs. Lionel Richie's "All Night Long" (all niiiight)

I think of "Celebration" the same way I think of a song like "Thank You For Being a Friend": Just a great pop song that feels like its always been here. Its weird for me to think of a time when this song hadn't been written yet. Makes me wonder what standard party songs were played instead. Its a perfect party song. Groove is tight, lyrics are corny but fun, and you can play this at literally any gathering and it works. Kool & the Gang just wrote the quintessential party song and I just adore it.

voting for celebration feels like voting for happy birthday

In The Fifth Element, Chris Tucker sings a few lines from All Night Long. Despite flying cars, a blue opera singer with mystical rocks in her stomach, and whatever the fuck Gary Oldman is wearing, the idea that All Night Long survived into the 23rd century is still the most outlandish thing in that movie.

Holy shit, you just dredged that commercial up from the deepest recesses of my memory and now there in no doubt in my mind that 'All Night Long' wins hands down. That ad fuckin' slaps.

All Night Long...it's just ~sexier~ although currently working night-shifts in a Covid-testing lab gives it a new meaning 🙃

It was inspired by the Quranic Adam and Eve creation narrative so that kinda tracks

I feel like "Celebration" is probably objectively better, but whenever I hear it I just think about how much stage fright I had as a kid and how I had to beg my 4th grade teacher to sit me out of the class performance of that song in the talent show.

I compare these songs by where I first heard them. I heard “Celebration” for the first time in the great Muppets from Space and I heard “All Night Long” for the first time in a stupid Mountain Dew commercial with a bunch of dancing animals from 2006. That commercial haunts me to this day so my vote is for “Celebration”.

I feel like "Celebration" vs "YMCA" would be a better match up because they have more comparable levels of energy and they're both barely even songs anymore due to overplay at every lame community social. "All Night Long" was never iconic/memorable enough to reach that level of lameness through oversaturation.

James

To me, Celebration is everyone happily drunk dancing at a family wedding. All Night Long is one of those compulsory middle school school dances where the boys and girls dance awkwardly in sperate ends of the gym while the teachers make sure no one gets too handsy during the slow dances.

Both songs are like party directors on cruise ships. All night is the one that leads a conga line past you while you’re in a deck chair while celebration is the one that grabs you from the chair and puts you at the front of the line against your will. So I choose celebration.

Both are vintage party anthems but "Celebration" sounds like the closest thing to a party the writers have experienced was on the last day of a Bible camp in high school.

No strong feelings either way about either of these songs, but "Celebration" rocks a bit harder while "All Night Long" has some pretty meh '80s production.

Steph

"Celebration" is the sound of middle school pep rallies and lukewarm sporting events. The celebrating is mandatory and awkward. "All Night Long" isn't as high energy, but that works in its favor. It feels like I'm being given the option to get up and dance or just sit on the couch and chill with friends.
