Flint Dibble Returns

We return to the world of Graham Hancock, pseudo-archaeology, and real archaeology with Cardiff University archaeologist Flint Dibble. Sadly the senior member of the Decoding team was absent for the interview but young apprentice decoder Chris struggled on as best he could.

This episode, recorded just before the release of Ancient Apocalypse Season 2 on Netflix and Graham Hancock's associated podcast PR tour, examines the appeal of myths like Atlantis, the criticisms Flint has faced from Hancock and others, and the broader challenges of communicating good science online.

The discussion covers whether debunking false narratives is effective, Flint's experiences with public engagement and social media harassment, and the cultural significance of "edutainment." We also explore the misconceptions perpetuated in popular media and the importance of academics actively participating in public discourse to counter culture-war-fueled stereotypes.

Finally, Chris also gets Flint to acknowledge that archaeology can't disprove his stunning new theory about ancient seaweed submarines powered by coral technology.

I agree with the DtG guys most of the time, but I am not impressed by Flint Dibble. Smug condescension is not the same thing as sound scientific criticism.

I got it sorted out Linda! I’d written the same thing to The Dissenter, the other Patreon show I support and he said to check my Patreon settings. I did, and must have done something but what I can’t say and now all is working as before! So weird!

Lucy

I did not get that message.

Linda Sears

Are other people getting a message saying you have to sign in to YouTube and show that you’re not a “bot” ? I can’t watch this on Patreon the way I have for years.

Lucy

This ep was the perfect counterbalance to JRE’s toxic tomfoolery. Just watched an infuriating youtube video that showed clips from this podcast, but the comment section has your back Dibble! https://youtu.be/JIJZ1QpR3E8?si=aDJhlFha49lK3LGx

I love that Editor Andy has his own hashtag

There's something I've been struggling to put my finger on for a long time now, it's a tendency in a significant percentage of thick people to give the benefit of the doubt to scumbags. It seems to transcend ideology and I see people apply it to 'true crime heroes' (see - the Krays were gentlemen etc), I see it applied politically to overtly unpleasant people from Geert Wilders to Trump, and I see it applied in real life where people will 'oh he's alright really' some despicable shit. I remember an acquaintance who did this a lot and how she reacted to the behaviour of one of her friends (beating his wife, intimidating witnesses, treating his daughter like shit in public...) by essentially arguing 'yeah but he's really funny!' Apparently her definition of 'funny' in this case was just shouting 'here she is' whenever someone entered a room. Anyway, I feel like a certain type of person has a kneejerk reaction towards shitty characters and I just can't quite figure out the through line, but I sense there's one there. Someone tell me if I'm an over caffeinated idiot?

Chris, did you at any point feel tempted to say, "I know you had your run-ins with Hancock and his pseudoarcheological buddies, but aren't you just digging up ancient history now?"

Robert Andrews

Wow! This is serious business with significant real-world impacts. Rogan and Hancock, raking in the spoils of their grifting, boosting low lifes who mobilize their troll armies to try and get Flint fired, while Flint navigates precarious access to health care to make sure his family doesn't suffer financial ruin if he gets sick again. The whole culture wars mess feels more gross than usual today. Thanks Matt and Chris for continuing to hold the gurisphere up to a higher standard. And thanks to Flint for patiently continuing to educate regular folk.

Lori Kiel

Lol I could sense that Chris foresaw an evil vision of a future “Decoding the Dibble” , yoda-anakin style, a few times

Jake Kortum

And, of course, the “mavericks” 😆

Only about t3/4 of the way through, but Flint is such a delight. I really hope he can serve as a model of sorts for other science minded academics to counter the charlatans and grifters!

Monica B.

By the way! I can confirm there are at least two Decoding the Guru’s fans in Cardiff

This might be a naive question but... what kind of loser chooses some random Atlantis believing, grandpa-esque, petty whackjob as their hero to the point they feel compelled to orchestrate an online attack against an archeologist who publicly questions said whackjob... I mean... how empty and meaningless and shitty and pathetic does one's life have to be to engage in this... I am bamboozled... There's gotta be a better way to spend your time even for them.

Chomagerider

Thanks for asking him my questions, the point about the historical racism in archeology was interesting

Jack

Graham Hancock is the Steven Segal of archeology, it looks like he's doing archeology, but he's mostly flopping about making archeology-sounding noises. I really feel for Flint, he's studied for many years to earn his title and spent even longer in the field doing real science only to have people like Rogan /a self proclaimed dummy/ worth a few hundred million dollars tell him he's an ignorant power hungry liar. I'm really looking forward to Flint's book and he also didn't shill his patreon, so: https://www.patreon.com/FlintDibble

I think the canoe section was repeated in the audio version? (Or my player skipped back for some reason)

Ryan Booker

And thanks for asking my meandering question.

Linda Sears

I loved what he said about using a consensus based positive to disprove a negative. Flint rocks. 🪨

Andy, Andy…

Christopher Kavanagh

That was a treat, you both have great best friend energy 😀 its fab to see Flint looking well and in great form. Glad he’s getting the attention he deserves on the socials. If he wants us to promote anything on the platforms I’m sure a bunch of us would help out. Totally bummed about the Netflix special staring Neo from the MATTrix 😩😊 Nice job Chris, for a change… kidding.

Rob Leslie Jr

Enjoying so far, but didn't even realize you guys had a previous convo… also @23:30 there's a lil surname typo that I'm sure is par for the course for you by now, oh mighty guru Chris 🙏

Empty_Cognizance

Thank you! I hope you conveyed to him how much we appreciate what he’s been doing.

Linda Sears

A welcome sight in these troubled times!
