Alina Chan’s article is full of inaccurate claims and conspiracy mongering. Basically everything raised has already been covered (we discussed almost all of it with experts over a year before). So the article and her presentation, as always, provides a misleading representation of the relevant strength of the evidence. People who rely on articles like Alina’s come away with the impression that there is a significant body of evidence for the lab leak being at best ignored if not actively suppressed by virologists. None of that is true.

That said, I do not understand the problem with the NYT publishing an opinion piece by Alina Chen on the origins of COVID-19. Even though a majority of the scientists with relevant expertise think that a zoonotic origin is more likely than a lab-leak, many experts assign a non-negligible probability to the latter, and most agree that more origin research is needed.
