Elon Musk Gurometer Episode

Only audio this time due to Matt being out visiting family.

We put the Tesla Titan through the Gurometer and see how he stacks up.

Also features an unavoidable discussion about THAT book list. Sorry!

IMO Elon is hands down a 83% guru hehe :)

May or may not be connected, but Robert Wright just released an old conversation between himself and Daniel Dennet.

The interviewer in the snippets used in the episode is such a toady it makes me want to throw up. Can't imagine being that much of a suck up to anyone and having any level of self-respect.

I wonder if Musk shares the views of his Canadian grandfather, a member of Technology Incorporated. See Welcome to the Technate on CBC Ideas. A world run by engineers and scientists. Not a very democratic movement.

There was a three part documentary on the BBC called The Elon Musk Show that I thought was unbiased. The majority of the people they interviewed respected him but were not sycophants, but there were also negatives stories about him, especially about how he treated his staff. It showed a whistle-blower who tipped the press off about the amount of waste at the Tesla factory. Musk fired him and then made fake reports to the police accusing him of having been seen with a gun and coming to kill him. There’s a heart-breaking clip of the guy in tears as he is confronted by a SWAT team. There was also an engineer that he blamed for his first rocket failing even though the fault had nothing to do with him. This seemed like the flip side of him taking credit for his engineers work and claiming to be solving the problems that the Dilberts weren’t clever enough to see. One of his ex-wives talked about how extreme his emotions were, despite his apparently diffident exterior. They talked about how intensely he hates people who he feels are betting against him. I thought this was probably related to his Asperger’s and to some extent explained his behaviour, although I’m not a psychologist and it would have been interesting to hear what Matt thought about that. However, I thought both episodes were great. The discussion about the way he was narcissistic without a lot of the normal signs was fascinating, and helped me understand things about him that I thought didn’t add up and were really annoying me.

The thing that stands out to me about Elon's stories about going around the factory floor telling them to remove parts is that Tesla used to be known for customer satisfaction and reliability (e.g. in Consumer Reports), and I believe they've now dropped quite a bit in those metrics.

Can't wait to hear my favorite influencer tell me what to think about the Nobel-winning book adaptation of the film on Fridman's List. And the sequels!
