2021-11-06 22:09:15 +0000 UTCI don't think the energy balance theory does a good job of explaining weight gain or loss in the long term, although it can be the cause of short term fluctuations (but weight loss from calorie restriction is very rarely maintained). Long term insulin sensitivity or resistance seems more important in determining weight issues. So diets which aim to improve insulin sensitivity be more helpful long term. And insulin sensitivity or resistance is all about the type of food you eat and when you eat. If you want a good explanation of this theory see Dr Jason Fung's video series on 'solving the two compartment problem' on YouTube. Actually Dr Fung could almost qualify as a guru, but I think he would be a benign guru. I would have linked the videos but I'm a bit tech limited :-)

2021-10-29 14:24:55 +0000 UTCOn weight determination: current theory focuses more on the control systems of the energy balance, so energy in/energy out is correct as far as it goes, but overly simplistic and thus very commonly misinterpreted. Reach out if you want more detail. Dr Brendan Hanrahan. FRACP. Bariatric physician.
