Interview with Stuart Ritchie (Advance Preview) *UNEDITED*

We chat with the psychologist and author Stuart Ritchie about his forthcoming book review of 'A Hunter Gatherers Guide to the 21st Century', Covid skeptics, his criticisms about public health messaging (and whether we are too kind to the authorities), the lab leak(!), and a variety of other issues. The requisite ratio of mild disagreement to back patting is met.

Enjoy!

This format is this podcast at its best, in my opinion. I have enjoyed almost all the shows but especially those with a third wheel. Please do more! As a minor side, it is great to hear people be able to disagree professionally.

Dr Ritchie is on ‘front’ page today of the Guardian online with his review of Bret and Heather Bullshit. Such Bs is #2 on Amazon books with a large number of quite favorable reviews.

Fair enough

JGraves

Have considered it but feels like we would be aping Jesse Singal!

Christopher Kavanagh

Also would love more talks about how the publish or perish mindset is pushing ppl to try to publish questionable science. This is important. I appreciated how much you discussed that

JGraves

I think you should do an episode on Martin Seligman and the questionable nature of Positive Psychology (as a thought).

JGraves

It’s coming just being tidied up a bit. Probably today.

Christopher Kavanagh

Good to see some debate on the show. The title for the episode should be: Stuart Ritchie “destroys” DTG hosts. 😄

This was great - thanks! btw is it possible to share the audio-only to the pateron feed in the future? Makes it much easier for me to listen on the move.

Steve Earl

Excellent conversation. More like it, please.

Just finished :-) Very interesting. The last but on hormones was also interesting. Actually Robert Sapolsky, who I still like despite his recent endorsement of the Weinsteins, has a fascinating discussion on the relationship between sex hormones and violence in his book 'Behave'. Also my other scientific hero Frans de Waal (who as far as I know has yet to endorse any Weinstein) is about to wade into the gender stuff to with his next book. Super looking forward to it!

Emma

Agree! I'm a kiwi living in Australia. It seems like NZ was so much smarter with just the one vaccine. The drama over here about the Pfizer/AZ thing is incredible and worrying. Today I heard an immunologically weak old man saying to his friend he was not going to get vaccinated yet because he was waiting for Pfizer. An attitude that may very well result in his premature death!

Emma

Oh no! I might have run into my first disagreement with my scientific hero Robert Sapolsky.

Emma

This was fantastic! I loved many points made by all! I also think that Matt is on to something about the value of a unified message. I think that is a big part of why has made the New Zealand government response so effective (at least so far but I say this on week 4(?) of a lockdown). But also the others are right that it can be unification on the wrong message! So hard.

YellowDreams

It better be as good as I expect.

Grammaticus Gore

Can’t wait to listen.
