"weigh twice as much as the moon" i.e. cost WAY more to get on and off it, as if it wasn't pricey enough already. moon's low gravity is a plus, not a minus. and what in god's name would effect the earth so bad it would effect the moon's orbit? nothing has purturbed the good ol' moony moon in 4.5 GY, what's around the corner to change that now? any orbital change is gonna be worse for the earth than the moon anyway. and a few days travel time is WAY cheaper/easier/safer than months/years to mars. If you want to get "off the earth" you want to get as far away from gravity wells as you can. best way to do this is mining the moon to make o'neil cylandars.

If something truly catastrophic happened to Earth, it could destabilize the orbit of the moon and effectively our eggs would still be in the same basket. On Mars we would weigh about twice what we do on the moon, something that would probably be important. But you are right, Mars is a symbolic step, not a place where we can hope for a real future. Thanks for the thoughtfulness you have put into these videos. It's given me something to really think about and most videos never come close to that.
