Behind the scenes! An air conditioning adventure

No, this isn't about my planned video on Air Conditioning, though the purchase here will be a very helpful aid for when it comes time to make that one!

This is just a video about a thing that you helped buy which has solved a big problem of mine, and which I think should be a more widely-produced product category.

A thing of context I didn't reveal!

Why do I have two portable A/C units?  Because Costco appeared to be taking their sweet time shipping my order.  My brother just visited from Hawaii and he was going to be staying with me, and it seemed possible that I wouldn't get the thing before he and his SO arrived.  So, I went to Home Depot and bought the other one in case that happened.  Then, of course, *the day after I bought the one from Home Depot,* I got notification that it had been shipped three days prior, and would be arriving tomorrow.  *facepalm*

That turned out to be a good idea anyway, because it means I can pretty much just shut my A/C off at night while I cool _just_ my bedroom, so it's very possible it could pay for itself!  I'm actually not a fan of central air conditioning for this very reason--what's the sense in cooling a space I'm not in?

As I'm sure you're aware, I'm a pretty big fan of energy conservation and environmentalism, so air conditioning is very much a guilty-pleasure of mine.  But I'm happy that I'm no longer wasting energy while at the same time not even getting cool.  At least now it works.

Anyway, thanks a bunch for this!  I hope to see other companies follow suit with a product like this!

(oh my goodness this post was riddled with typos and crap at first.  I am bad at stuff)

The most disturbing part of this video is discovering you wear shoes while walking on your carpet.

You live in an apartment, you've stuffed it full of high-tech high-dollar portable goodies, and you're on YouTube ... I hope you have a good security system.

I've been looking into replacing my clunky in-wall A/C unit that is in my sunroom/mancave addition to my house when I bought it. I think it was from the early 90s or so. It works OK, but it is big and runs constantly to keep the room cool even with the double doors to the rest of the central A/C cooled house. Still my electric bill is not as bad as when I had 3 pizza box servers running 24x7.

I have central A/C (for the first time in my life! never had air conditioning before) and it is MAGIC. I don't mind that it cools my whole house, though, because I have pets that roam around. I'm also extremely fortunate to be able to pay a little more to my power company to get 100% of my power from renewables (or have an equivalent amount of power put into the grid from renewables, etc you know how it works i'm sure) so I feel a little less guilty about the energy use of keeping cool.

I like that you're starting to make more videos about tech we maybe wouldn't see normally, but that you enjoy. I really like the format for you. : )

My central A/C is subpar, similar situation to your magic pack as far as cooling the house. Though my problem is caused by too much heat getting past the roof insulation (unfortunately I can't just reinsulate without an entire new roof) I got a window 10,000 BTU unit and it serves your portable purpose. Though I have though about supplementing my home-office with something though.

We have a larger Whynter brand movable one to augment our central AC that is slightly undersized for our house. Works great, even if you use just the dehumidifier mode. And can roll to whereever you need it. Big fan of portable units.

Thomas Fuchs

It might, but I would have no idea how to do that without getting some scaffolding or a cherry picker up the side of the building to install one. It looks like someone in my building has actually corrected the issue by altering the brickwork (there's one unit that has a different looking vent, but I could just be mistaking a vent replacement), but I am certain that would cost more than this solution anyway.

I didn't know that anyone made portable mini-splits; that is awesome! Do you think that if you installed a booster fan on the magic-pak exhaust that it would move enough air to keep the compressor cool?
