The first monster we encountered in the instance wasn't a high level. It was a level 70 A-rank monster, the same type of beast we had seen inside the vault. However, the fact that the monster now had a rank told me the system had taken over.
These weren't of huge concern to our main group, so the Mul Branova took the lead in clearing out the chaff.
"So, now that we have a minute, how about we talk, Bran?" Circe suggested, letting the lower ranks of our group gain more experience.
I raised an eyebrow at her tone. "Careful now. It's not like I knew this was going to happen."
"That's possibly the most troubling part," Circe retorted, pursing her lips. "I'm surprised you didn't see it coming."
Merlin turned to Circe and scoffed. "What, you think he can see the future or perhaps you’ve set the bar lower and he’s supposed to be omniscient?"
At those words, there was an awkward pause from the group as a whole, causing Merlin to look around. Her gaze turned to Simone incredulously. "He can't see the future, can he?"
Simone grit her teeth and waffled her head back and forth. "He can't exactly see the future. Instead, he's from the future."
Merlin choked. "From the future?"
I scratched my head. "From a future. This reality has already deviated considerably from the one I experienced. I never actually went into the vault in my past life. I was only able to put together the pieces of what it was and roughly what happened after Vincent invited me to remove the inscription."
Circe nodded. "Then who cleared it in your past life?"
I pointed to her. "The Clans. They discovered what Vincent was hoarding at the end of the First Demon War. Then the Clans took it, violently. I can only assume that they went in and cleared it. Though with the strength that we saw inside, I wouldn't be shocked if that group from the clans didn't all die and become possessed. I know for a fact the Demon General inside this vault was active during the War for Supremacy at the very least some of them lost their lives."
Now Merlin was giving me even stranger looks. "Demon Wars? War for Supremacy?"
I sighed heavily. "Well, now that I don't have to keep it a secret, I might as well tell you. In two weeks' time, a barrier that has protected Earth since its inception is going to disappear and demons are going to invade. Our planet is going to become a battlefield between demons and other powerful forces beyond our world."
"Aliens?" Merlin asked.
"They are foreign creatures from another world, so it fits, though I wouldn't expect big green-headed men. You'll be sadly disappointed," I replied.
Merlin smirked, hiding a smile behind tight lips. "So if you're from a future and you came in here. What was your purpose?"
"To stop this round of demons from making this war worse. The First Demon War is going to be harsh. Our entire planet will be initiated all at once. Well, those who are old enough," I corrected myself. "It's going to be absolute chaos. At the same time, a number of hell gates are going to open up. Giant red beams are going to stretch all the way to the sky, and demonic monsters are going to surge forth as the shock troop to soften up our world."
Merlin was at least taking my words seriously, judging by the way she swallowed audibly. "Is there anything we can do to stop that? From the demons arriving here?"
"Absolutely not. In fact, we want them to come," I said, noting Simone's expression but keeping mine neutral.
Merlin didn't miss the exchange. "I take it you don't agree, Simone?" she asked.
"Agree to disagree," I replied. "If the demons don't come, if we don't let some survival of the fittest happen, then humanity is going to be too weak for what comes next. I don't like it, but it's the reality of the situation. If we shut down the Hell Gates to save everyone, then when the next group of demons comes, we'll be nothing but sitting ducks."
Not to mention humanity would likely eat itself alive if it wasn’t given a common enemy, but that was a conversation for the start of the War for Supremacy.
"Perhaps a small number of initiated could solve everything," Merlin suggested, trying to find the best of both worlds.
I shrugged. "And in the process of future conflicts, watch as those too weak to do anything become merely collateral damage, or the next round of demons devours them up to create an army of possessed husks." I gestured around us. "Merlin, you've seen their goal for yourself. Humans that are unable to fight back will be nothing but resources."
I had already questioned my own logic, and I had settled on my stance. It was perhaps an overly harsh way to think about it, but it was the best answer considering all factors. "And there will be plenty of people who don't have enough levels to participate, but humanity needs to grow beyond its current confines. And the First Demon War, while tough, is going to be far better than the War for Supremacy or in the Second Demonic War for humanity to learn."
"Bran, let’s get back to you not predicting this issue," Circe interjected. "Now that Merlin is at least passably caught up, can we resume our conversation?" she sighed exasperatedly, as if updating Merlin had been painful.
"Right," I agreed. "I don't know what changed. I didn't come in here the first time, and I could only infer information from my past. However, I would be shocked if it took this long the first time. It would have made far more noise within the community. And given what I later learned about the seeds of demonic souls..." I paused, realizing I was rambling. "The fact of the matter is we can’t change what’s happened. I'm going to have to prioritize. Circe, what's happened over this past year?"
Rather than make guesses it was time to start preparing.
"Let's see…where do I even start?" Circe mused. "Well, let's start where you left me high and dry.”
Clearly Circe was going to hold this grudge for a while.
"Alright, so I disappeared, and you were out too many people for your expansion into North America," I said, trying to speed her up.
"Among other problems," she said. "So I had to utilize your parents and what you left behind of the Mul Branova, who, by the way, have expanded. Though many lack being initiated nor do they idolize you quite so much."
I shrugged. "That's to be expected when we aren't around to lead them. How will they become loyal to people they've never met before?”
Circe continued. “Your mother and father pitched in considerably, and then I kept giving them jobs. I needed them away because the Borrson clan has been snooping around Vein City. Your exploits in the Heroes clan have leaked out by now." Circe told me.
I nodded, that having been part of my previous plan. I wanted to go after the Borrson clan members who had tried to kill my mother. That project was likely going to be a long, extensive one. Only everything had changed and I wasn't there to work on it.
"So I've kept your mother and father away from Vein City. I ended up bringing some of my own people and running the Odyssey clan a little looser as I expanded heavily with the next two recruitments. Except, oh wait, none of them have activated bloodlines," Circe said, glaring at me.
The could have initiated them all with the golden rams, but without their bloodlines they wouldn’t be quite up to the Heros Clan standards.
"So it's been more difficult, but you've managed. When we get out of here, I think one of the first things I need to do is go to any reasonable cluster of Heros clan members and awaken their bloodlines.” I reassured her.
“If you can escape from Zeus and Hercules," Circe smirked.
"Hopefully, I don't have to run from them for long. Otherwise, that's gonna make everything harder than it needs to be," I shot back. "So, the Borrson clan has been bothering you?"
"They've ruined a few chairs," Circe said, a sour look on her face. "But we have now notified all of the other clans of the oncoming demons. Even if some of them didn't take us seriously, they were doing enough to at least be considered some level of precaution."
The clans had been around for a long time. All of them had similar prophesies passed down, but over time people forgot. Meanwhile the dangers snuck up.
"Did any of them give you trouble in particular?" I asked.
Circe shook her head. "No but, during the trouble with the Borrsons, I may have..." She hesitated, "let it slip that you have a golden titan bloodline just to make my peer over there a little upset."
I quirked an eyebrow at her. "Really, Circe?"
She only gave me a helpless shrug. "He was being a dick and ruined a chair. I had to needle him at least a little. Besides, I may have been a little pissed at you and your disappearing act."
Her mischievousness had definitely gone a little too far with that information. Knowledge of my bloodline would create some actual trouble for me in the future. Although, the Borrsons were likely coming for me anyway. The only thing she really changed was how direct they might be in their approach.
Merlin cleared her throat. "Not to interrupt, but Bran, you had alluded to having some way to alter these fruits when we got out." Merlin held one up.
This time, when I inspected it, it showed its true colors.
[Wretched Apple of Insight - Consume for +100 Intelligence, a 30% debuff to your spirit. Multiple within a short duration will damage your spirit permanently.]
Merlin glanced at the fruit, no doubt inspecting it as well. Now she could see the debuff that it would give, as well as the warning that consuming multiple might do permanent damage to one's spirit.
"Actually, when we set up to rest, that's something I can work on.” Tapping my chin as I thought it over. “I'd rather do as many as I can at once.” I added.
“I'm not sure if that's the best idea." Circe gestured over at the Mul Branova who were waiting diligently for me, but giving me a bit of space. "If they have more of these fruits, doing it now might make all of this faster anyway."
She had a point. There were plenty of stats to go around. That and who knew what we might encounter, perhaps it would be best to put these to use as soon as possible.
"Simone," I turned to her. "Pull the Mul Branova back. We're going to take out all of our fruits and work on them now.”
Gloria had trailed behind Simone and her eyes lit up like two shining stars. "Really? Then we can eat them?" She asked excitedly.
"And it'll work for non-fruits too, right?" Nyx turned her hand over and mounds of pies started appearing.
I inspected them as did Circe and Merlin. Circe must have been impressed because her jaw nearly hit the ground.
"You're going to give me a few of those as compensation for all of the work I've been doing, right?" Circe pulled her chin back up and smiled softly at me. All the hostility from her completely vanished into a friendly professional manner.
"Really? I thought you were upset with me," I huffed playfully and crossed my arms. "Are you telling me a few pies are going to change all of that?"
"Well, you're still going to have a little trouble with Hercules and Zeus and perhaps a few pies would make a wonderful bribe," Circe gave me a brilliant smile that was at least partially genuine.
I believed she would help me with Hercules and Zeus for a bribe. I just wasn't sure if I could afford to give them to her. But I knew that I would likely need her help in the battles to come. Worst case, I’d give her some of my cut.
"That's fine Circe. We have plenty. Everyone, start emptying out. Merlin, if you would, could you make a large flat dish? Preferably one that I can rotate."
Merlin waved her staff. A giant plate made of ice, with about a two-foot high lip, appeared in front of us.
"Perfect," I grinned, tipping out the fruits in my own storage ring. They came tumbling out by the dozen. Gloria and Simone joined in before everyone started emptying out their spatial rings, filling the massive icy plate.
Circe began drooling, looking at them while gold coins flashed in her red eyes.
"Think about how much system gold these are worth. Especially to someone who's already spent a fair amount on your stats," I chuckled at Circe.
She wiped at her lips. "I don't know what you're talking about," she pulled herself back together. "However, I think you certainly have enough to spare at least a thousand stats for me." She pursed her lips.
Quite frankly, that wasn't even a tenth of what Nyx had in her own storage ring. For that price, I would happily buy Circe's help.

Some chapters about the Nester Familiy&fortess Expansion;Thorin&Elle; North American Section of Odyssey;Heros Clan at large during Brans time in the vault would be nice

2025-01-20 02:04:28 +0000 UTCYeah I think you’re right. Bruce has talked about slowing down his pacing and only putting out 8 books in 2025. I hope that allows him to return to form. DD201 was pretty good, but again after that quality slipped some - DD202 was a slog for me, and I’ve not read 203 yet as a result

2025-01-17 01:04:33 +0000 UTCI noticed a difference in the last couple of DJ, and DD 104. Think the breaking point in DJ was when they went to hell, DD 104 was not up to normal standards but 201 was good and gives me hope. I will not quit reading/listening or leave his Patreon, but some work needs to be done. Once again, a new father with a young family wants to be successful for himself and his family. Think he has too many irons in the fire and should slow down a little. With 3-4 series going and working on web comics not to mention wanting to start some kick starters and re releasing DJ in hardback, I'm, sure it's pretty stressful

2025-01-17 00:30:02 +0000 UTCthanks for the chapter.

2025-01-16 22:06:48 +0000 UTCIMO adding chapters of Bran speedrunning the interesting stuff before getting stuck in the vault doesn't help at all. Unless Bruce changes his intended plan, which is to do the vault and then head into the rapture, which would require at minimum rewriting about the last third of this book and adding an additional book or books to his series outline, the core problem remains.

2025-01-16 15:07:05 +0000 UTCNot really trying to argue. I did say I agree with most of the complaints. Adding a few chapters in the beginning of book could alter the book enough. Chapters about before entering vault establishing Circ better. Maybe throw in a meeting of a borrison scout and Bran trashing his ass before going into vault. So instead of 1 and half years in vault maybe cut it down to 6 months. Leaving maybe 6 weeks before rapture. Yes and edit Brans behavior towards those around him to match up with his character from the last two books. Maybe an early chapter talking with his group about what they need to work on in vault. The few chapters that sucked, put a bad taste in everyone mouth and kind of derailed it. This made it look like a lot of chapters where crap. Adding a few early chapters might be enough. And edit existing chapter to make Bran not sound like am idiot. I think him putting a chapter a day out is to much stress on Bruce's writing.

2025-01-16 14:09:45 +0000 UTCIt's not just a "few bad chapters", it's Bruce's decision to skip ahead to the rapture and abandon or push back the plotlines of building his power base preparing for the rapture, establishing the Odyssey branch in North America with Circe, dealing with the other clans, etc. in favor of this IMO not very interesting vault plotline. Not an issue that can be fixed in editing. And that's this series. It's not a universal opinion but some of us didn't like the last couple of Dungeon Diving books. Nothing against Bruce, I'll always love many of the series he's written and he's the first creator I subscribed to on Patreon. But some of the current series are going in a direction some of us aren't enjoying. It is what it is.

2025-01-16 12:28:43 +0000 UTCHey guys I know we have had some disappointments in these chapters. But lets remember all the shit that Bruce has been through on the end of last book and the beginning of this one. These are unedited chapters. He has fixed thing in past books after chapters have come out. I do agree with a lot of your complaints as well. But just to jump ship because of a few crappy chapters is crazy. And stop calling chapters in the middle of a book cliffhangers. A cliffhanger happens at the end a book, and you have to wait months for the next book to reach a conclusion. Bruce I hope you do read some of these complaints and take them serious. This story is awesome, but your character development has been choppy in this book. The timing of events in this book is also off or don't make sense. If you want this book to go the distance your timing of events happening is not making sense to your readers. I am not a writer and half the time I can't even spell correctly or use proper Grammer. But I can see when a story is starting to struggle. If you need more breaks take em. It's awesome you want to give us chapter everyday, but it seems you need to flush out your ideas a little more amigo.

2025-01-16 11:01:29 +0000 UTCOoof, I feel for you there. Yeah I think you’re right, it was originally the ‘after third book curse’. However, to my way of thinking it’s slowly been moving forward - if memory serves it was book 5 or 6 which was the first DJ I remember having divided opinions. DD was indeed 104. And if RD ends up being book 3, it would confirm the curse is moving forward. I really hope I’m wrong. And I remain a patron. But for a few weeks I’ve been considering if it was worth it. I’ve literally been here for RD for months now.

2025-01-16 09:54:04 +0000 UTCDecided not to renew when my membership expires next month. While I want to support Bruce, the declining quality of writing and lack of engagement has helped me decide to put my resources towards authors that are producing content that I like better. I’ll probably continue to read his books on KU, and join again if he improves.
Mistweaver
2025-01-16 09:33:11 +0000 UTCI thought the curse came *after* the third book? Dragon's Justice and Dungeon Diving both had 3rd books that were well received IIRC. DD 104 is where the story started to go downhill with Ken's idiocy in the elven empire, for example. Also I paid for a full year on Bruce's Patreon so I'm stuck here till end of October.

2025-01-16 09:04:37 +0000 UTCWell I’m glad to see Elle and Thorin got a work out, hopefully they’re decently strong when we run into them next. The Mul Branova thing makes sense too - initiating them is going to be important. As will awakening the bloodlines for the Heros, I’m keen to see that happen and what it’ll do to Bran’s skills. And hopefully Bran can fix the fruit and pies and everyone can load up! The permanent Spirit damage is something I’d not expected - hopefully it wasn’t the whole 30% as that would really suck for Antonio. It’s nice to see things moving at a fair clip, but I must admit I’m still on the fence about this book (and series). So much promise was pissed away… there could have been multiple books with Bran trying to set the stage and the demon lord actively working against him - turn the demons into proper bad guys instead of a sort of nameless boogeyman. Alas that’s not to be, and I mourn that loss. We’ll see how this works out, then I’ll need to decide if I wanna continue being one of Bruce’s patrons.
Iron Akela
2025-01-16 08:44:38 +0000 UTCYeah, the vault’s time skip has pissed away everything special about the series
Iron Akela
2025-01-16 08:38:46 +0000 UTCYeah the curse of the third book is real. I agree with you 100%. DJ took longer to lose me, Ard’s Oath never really grabbed me (that one went off the rails mid book 1), and DD lost me when Ken turned into Zach. I’d hoped RD wouldn’t do that, or at least it might take a while longer but I’m very much where you are now. So much promise wasted. The whole ‘returner’ sub genre is about the deviation to my way of looking at things. It’s about stacking the deck and doing all the things you wished you could. Same as any do-over book series. And RD threw all that away for a side quest that didn’t even need to happen!!

2025-01-16 08:37:36 +0000 UTC"Real diplomacy is done with a gun in one hand and a pie in the other and ask which you prefer." -twist on a quote from Harry Dresden.
Mavrox
2025-01-16 08:36:03 +0000 UTCI would say that is a common issue with reborn/returner stories, eventually the MC makes so many changes there advanced knowledge becomes erroneous. Time skip may have been nessisary. The issues coming from beyond earth won't be as impacted, war of supremacy would be on the other hand.
Mavrox
2025-01-16 08:30:01 +0000 UTCYeah it feels a lot like the time skip was to reduce the impact Bran would have if he prepared and planned for that full year. Honestly I'm kinda disappointed by book 3 so far, I'm really hoping for a good payout by the end and not Hercules and Zeus pushing Bran around
CesarC.
2025-01-16 07:53:52 +0000 UTCDid we skip a chapter because at the end of the last one the two old ladys were left behind to solve their issues and now they are both with the group?

2025-01-16 07:41:28 +0000 UTCCurrently thinking I might not buy this book, and even questioning if I'll remain a patron, which sucks. I don't want to get invested in a series only for it to lose what made it special, and its a recurring pattern now that stories that start with so much promise have plots that either fast forward past what was so interesting and showed so much promise, or go off the rails into tiring and frustrating stuff. Characters that either radically change or go to the extreme on one aspect of their personality and become caricatures of what they were. I want to keep reading and enjoying Sentar books, and the fact that I'm considering it might be better to not at all in order to avoid disappointment sucks. I hope either this is a temporary phase for me or that the stories stop swerving after the first couple of books, but the whole thing sucks.

2025-01-16 07:36:12 +0000 UTCPlease don’t leave us on too big of a cliffhanger

2025-01-16 07:28:01 +0000 UTCIt was mentioned or hinted at in the Circe chapter after they'd been in the vault for months. Noone outright said anything, but Circe made the subtle threat about the Borrson making an attempt on a Heros Clan member with poison. (I think?)
Jamie R
2025-01-16 07:27:11 +0000 UTCI mean there's not much they can do in two weeks anyway so doesn't matter if they spend that time in this instance. The damage is done. Was Vidarr (the Borrson clan guy) involved in the attempt to kill Bran's mother? Didn't see that being hinted at.
ArbabSB
2025-01-16 07:25:22 +0000 UTCCirce is right to be angry. Bran totally got played by the Demon Lord and pissed away his returner advantage. I wish we'd gotten more business with the five clans before the rapture. The demons are not interesting antagonists by comparison IMO. Bran might need a lot of those vitality-increasing pies for himself if he's going to act as a tank in the fight against the (probably Demon General-possessed) dracoon.

2025-01-16 07:21:40 +0000 UTCWell let's hope a pie solves all his problems with Zeus and Hercules.

2025-01-16 07:16:44 +0000 UTCStroke the personal greed for Zeus and Hercules and he'll be fine. I still want a short side quest of bran and his dad on a clan killer family road trip 🤣

2025-01-16 07:15:04 +0000 UTCYes, the stat booster food is a good bribe to get the Hero's clan off Brans back, especially if Circe is willing to pitch in, for a fee of course. But damn Nyx! You grabbing those pies was brilliant, but I think you outdid Gloria and her extortion racket on the steps there. Makes me wonder howany total stats the food will grant? And wha the cost of purifying them might be? Glad to see some things finally being addressed and sorted, but please don't tell me they're going to be stuck in the instance until rapture and the book ends with the Hell Gates going active...? As for the Borrson douche that Circe leaked info to... He's a dead man walking for trying to kill Bran's mother. Good thing they only think he has the Golden Titan SSS rank bloodline and not the Primordial Titan M rank... They would lose their shit if they knew there was something above SSS... Though shocking Zeus and Hercules with that would be a laugh!
