RD 3 Ch 40

Chapter 40

Now that I had something to do besides staring out at the empty white expanse, I realized how much time was passing by.

As the different Mul Branova summoned me into their souls, I realized that I was sitting on the shelf about six hours between members of the Mul Branova finishing and the next starting. The demons were only doing two or possibly three of the Mul Branova possessions a day.

Thankfully for me, they were doing them one at a time, and I was able to directly support each. The Mul Branova all showed different levels of excitement when they realized they could summon me into their soul. Though I cautioned them, the only reason I was able to do so, and actively help, was that I wasn't doing anything else at present.

Still, they all seemed very excited at the idea of being able to call on me and my strength.

What I was most worried for, however, was when the demons would try and possess the others. Simone, Nyx, and Gloria were, of course, a high concern, but the rest of the initiates that had joined the vault would also be at risk. I could only hope that I got an opportunity to personally deal with the demons who tried to take them.

From what I had picked up in snippets of conversation, this General Zaydelin had now set his eyes on possessing me, all due to the Sacrificial Worship ability that the new devotees were able to provide. Any general would love to be able to call upon his supporters' strength and enhance his own power.

Not that Zaydelin stood a chance at receiving it from me. The demon general would have a rude awakening when he finally challenged me.

I floated there, frozen in stasis as yet another pull tugged at my mind. I was wondering how many more of the Mul Branova were going to undergo possession, only to find myself in a strange space when I followed this tug.

Instead of one, there were three. Myra, Zyra and Kyra were all decked out in gold ball gowns amid a rich hall that resembled Zeus’ back in the Heros Clan.

All three of my servants were present in the soul space which was odd enough.

To join them there was a three-headed demon that much resembled a massive purple ogre. It held a spell-casting staff in one hand and a cudgel in the other. That demon resonated with three different souls.

"And what are you three up to?" I said, pausing and squinting at all three of them with soul gaze to make sure they were indeed real. It was interesting for them to be in the same soul space.

I took a moment to thank Amanda who had successfully injected her ability through the talisman and projected me to protect my three golden servants’ soul.

The red-haired Myra turned to me. "Bran?" she asked, blinking away her surprise.

"That would be me." A blade of blood pulled down into my hand.

Kyra and Zyra turned, Myra's words peeling their eyes away from the demonic ogre.

"Help us," the two said in unison.

"Care to explain how you ended up here?" I asked, swinging my sword around and walking towards the massive demonic ogre.

"It's a long story, but it was that strange crypt.” Myra said,. “It gave us a weird ability before…”

But they did not have a chance to say any more before the ogre's magical staff glowed. I had heard the story already anyways.

Meteor-sized fireballs began descending from the sky, at the same moment the ogre charged forward, swinging that cudgel at me as his skill activated.

I could see the sorcerer and the barbarian of the ogre.

The ogre somehow possessed three classes. A barbarian, a sorcerer, and a demonic worshiper. Somehow, it was a classic party composition all in of itself.

A Crimson Barrier sprang up around me and my three servants.

Raining balls of fire hammered against the red barrier, shattering it just in time for my sword to collide with the cudgel.

The Demonic Ogre barely registered the impact, its large body flexing as the cudgel strained against my sword, dark unholy magic roiled off the center head and wrapped around its body like a set of veins outside its skin. Its muscles swelled as it strained further.

My feet slid back against the increasing pressure, only for the magical staff on the other side to swing, in a pincer attack. I stopped resisting and let the cudgel swing me clear, the staff and cudgel slamming together with a loud click of wood.

"Ladies, you need to believe in me a little more," I glared back at the three servants.

Unlike the Mul Branova, who, when I entered their souls, both gave me access to Soul Resilience and assumed I’d defeat their demon, the three servants appeared to be different. They didn't have the same faith in me. Not to mention, they'd never really seen me take on anything big.

"I do believe in you, Bran," Myra said, glancing at the other two. "It must be them."

Realizing all three were in the same soul space, I frowned. "Perhaps you need to be on the same page. Talk to each other and make this right. Within this space, you three can control everything. Including whether I win or lose."

The demonic ogre came roaring after me as my three servants rushed away, whispering under their breath.

I watched as they stared back at the demonic ogre, his body shrinking with each step until he was nothing more than a pipsqueak in front of me. I lifted a foot and held him back as he screamed and started to bash my ankle with his two weapons, though it barely hurt.

Really? The ogre was the size of a puppy but still held his ferocity as he did his best impression of an ankle biter.

The three servants giggled to the side, at least they made him tiny. Though I’d have preferred it if they made me mighty.

I snapped my foot back and kicked the tiny demonic ogre a dozen feet away, swinging my sword back and forth as I approached him.

Their lack of faith in me could be remedied later.

"Can I get a cage from you three?" I asked, only for something that looked like it was supposed to cage a gerbil to drop down over the demonic ogre who roared in a high-pitched squeak and started slamming his weapons against the cage.

To my own surprise, the servants were incredibly effective at controlling their space. I raised an eyebrow and turned to them. "Care to explain a few things, like why are all three of you in here together?"

Myra glanced at the other two before realizing she had become the de facto speaker in the current situation. "Well," she said, "it probably had something to do with the skill we all got. It was called Fusion." She eyed the three headed ogre.

I raised an eyebrow. "Fusion?" Then, realizing they were all in the same soul space, my eyebrow climbed further. "As in, you're one person right now?"

They glanced back at the demonic ogre, wailing in its new pet cage, and I realized that most of these demons were prepping the bodies to be their hosts. Seeing the three heads, it made sense to me that it was really three demons fused into one body. That would explain the three classes. I glanced back at my servants.

"And you used this ability?" I asked.

The three of them suddenly struck a pose where they pointed with both hands and bent at the waist towards each other. "Like this," Myra said.

I frowned at the ridiculous pose. I was certain the ability would work without the corresponding stance. The demon must have a strange sense of humor. "That doesn't matter. So, you are now fused," I said slowly this time.

"It would seem so, Master," Myra bowed.

I rubbed my chin, wondering what effects that would have on other parts of their abilities. What would happen to the three bloodlines that I gave them? And of course, there were bound to be other changes as well.

"Do you think..." I started, my curiosity outweighing everything else.

But Myra held a hand up to stop me. "We know absolutely nothing, Bran. As soon as we all learned the skill, it activated and we ended up here."

I nodded. The others from the Mul Branova had similar experiences. The demons weren't very patient in their possession. Then again, from everything I'd heard from Boss, they were quickly running out of time.

Hopefully that meant that my own possession would be soon. That empty white room and being unable to do anything was driving me nuts.

"We'll figure that out when we get out of here. Thank you, three." I nodded at them. "But we have just a little more to do before we are done here. I'm going to teach you three the Soul Absorption Art."

Their eyes lit up with recognition, and I realized this was likely something that Zeus and Hercules had particularly asked them to observe.

That fact made me hesitate. I wondered if it was a mistake to teach it to them. But playing it out, it seemed low risk. If they taught more of the Heros Clan the Soul Absorption Art, it wouldn't be the worst outcome. After all, it was a potent tool to use against the demons, and the First Demon War would include lots of possessions.

Kyra was the first to speak. “If Hercules asks, I’ll say you did it for me. Chewed up and baby-birded me rather than teach it to me.” She looked at the other two flipping her blonde hair over her shoulder, “Right?”

What an odd way to put it.

“Right.” Zyra nodded, the short black bob dancing as she vigorously moved her head, as if the harder she nodded the more convincing she looked.

Myra was the last but only closed her eyes and spoke softly. “That was a given. After the bloodline and this opportunity, there is little sway from the small favors the Heros Clan leaders can provide.”

“Good, then we’ll get started.” I felt that they were speaking the truth and my blade turned into a kitchen knife. “Now, the essence of the ability is turning an invading soul into nourishment. That means you’re going to eat this guy.” I pointed to the demon in the cage. “As we do this, I also want to come up with a plan to get the demons to try and possess me next.”

“Yes, Master.” Myra said, kneeling down next to the cage. “Is there a way to turn him into something… more appetizing?”

“This is your world. Shape it as you will.” I said.

She turned and whispered to the other two as the demonic blood on the ground bloomed into piles of chocolate. “Mmm. This might not be so bad. We can turn him into chocolate and eat him for power.”

I shrugged and got to work helping them make chocolates from the demon. “Make sure to turn him into a large quantity of chocolate, you don’t want to concentrate this too much. Take your time to absorb as much as you can.”

Thanks for the chapter :) _________________________________________________ I took a moment to thank Amanda who had successfully injected her ability through the talisman and projected me to protect my three golden servants’ {souls). Again chapter 14 they all know Soul Absorption arts

Iain Grubb

Writing off the cuff is fine, I do that myself with my own works. But you can still make notes as you go. I didn’t realise Crimson was still referred to as level 57. That seems like an epic mistake considering she’s the first human to break 60!!

Iron Akela

I’m more curious how they know about anime after being stuck in the vault for so long.

David

I think that's the idea, to speed things up and have different things to write about.

Mick

Very easy to forget something you have written earlier if you don't do an outline, think I heard Bruce just does this off the cuff. Also, when you make a character super duper powerful you have to have some nerfed chapters to make it some kind of challenge. Bruce needs to have someone proof read that makes charts on things that have been done, character stats etc to keep continuity. My biggest pet Peeve in DD is Crimson, she started out level 57, she spent a month slaughtering hi level Naga solo and it even says in the end of 104 that she's now surpassed the elves, but in later books she still level 57.

Mick

Should be their bodies fused too. They said they were now one person and then after that happened they came to the soul space.

Jacob

Fused into Buu and turned everyone to chocolate!

Jacob

Can’t wait to see Bran curb stomp this General Zaydelins soul. Wonder if he’ll go for stealing abilities again this time or grab its stats? Would be cool if he found a demon with “Last Stand” that he could absorb to boost the rank of his own it’s been a difficult skill to level for Bran

Azazel

Oh that was definitely a “Fuuusion… HAH!“ reference 👌

Azazel

That’s always a possibility unfortunately :o( That damn idiot ball!!!

Iron Akela

You're right that it's a continuity error that can be fixed. But I get the feeling after forgetting Bruce was thinking to advance the plot by handing Bran the Idiot Ball that Zach from DJ and more recently Ken from DD seem very fond of.

ArbabSB

I get the need for the time shenanigans to explain the way this vault is going and using up demon souls. But using it as a fast forward by a year or more…

Iron Akela

Yeah it does seem to have become a pattern. Between stats being iffy, the mysterious 3 additional months at the clan, and these past few chapters which explicitly ignore things said a few chapters earlier, RD3 has serious issues.

Iron Akela

Lindor truffles, now demonic flavored!!!!

Naotsugu97

Yeah, it has seemed book 3 or 4 where consistency seems to wane. I managed to make it to DD201 before I lost any drive for that series.

Iron Akela

Bruce has a real problem with continuity… In all 3 of his current book series. Whoever is doing his proofing is failing him. I don’t care if the primary purpose is grammar and spelling you would think if your reading the entire book 1 - 3 chapters a day you would still be able to catch those things.

Jeremy Daniels

There was a sex scene with Gloria earlier in the book.

ArbabSB

So many similar vibes to the elven world dungeon diving book. Bran’s supposed to be hundreds of years old and has come back with extensive knowledge of the future and the books so far have been him acting on that and taking advantage of it. Now he’s acting like a moron, lack of planning, lack of using the knowledge he has, endangering all of those that follow and worship him and, all round just not in keeping with the character of the first books. It’s so similar to Ken in 104 (I think it was) the careful, and cunning assassin that decides to be a brawler out of nowhere that runs into every situation with little to no planning and inevitable runs into problems he can’t fix because of it. I’m usually waiting for Bruce’s chapters to drop at 7am my time, most chapters from this book I’ve read in batches days after release, I’ve lost the drive and desire for more same as I did for DD series. Bruce seems brilliant at coming up with the premise for stories, and the world they’re set in but the plot lines and pacing after the 2nd/3rd books recently have been pretty bad.

Dawzie

these chapters were somewhat interesting but as some of the other comments it makes me wonder what Bran is even thinking of since he supposedly told them about the soul stuff already and it seems he's a little bit underprepared well hopefully things are straightened out or explained better. I also get the feeling that when they do finally get out it's going to be close to the Rapture so I don't know.

Tim Nielsen

Really liked books one and 2. This one is… odd? It feels like a less interesting/less exciting repeat of the last book. Has bran even gotten laid this book? Meh.

Hayden Leech

Exactly, even no tume shenanigans would be fine. 1 or 2 months as planned and we still would have time for that. I think all books i've read with time shenanigans took something of a downwardsway in the story

Julian Lachner

Yeah, no... I am bored. Pretty soon I'll reach apathy and just stop reading this hot garbage. As has been mentioned, Bran should have already taught this skill to everyone. The storyline here is dull. I honestly don't care to read through a dozen chapters of Bran showing up in everyone's head to save the day, yadda, yadda. Even writing this out is becoming tedious. I think I've said enough. Unless real and significant changes are made to correct this mess, I doubt I'll be back here to comment, much less read the actual book when it comes out.

Brian

Definitely. If this is how we get to the rapture so soon, it’ll ruin so many good opportunities for story and character development. Personally I’d have had the time dilation the other way, slow down time inside the vault. That way when everyone comes out, it’s a day or week as opposed to weeks or whatever. That gives room for a couple more books of shenanigans, as opposed to the rapture being at the end of this book, or next book (which is what I fear will be happening). It’s not like there’s a shortage of material for preparations leading up to the rapture. We’ve the whole Borsson thing, Sect of Heaven’s Fist to clean up, and maybe meeting the other clans.

Iron Akela

In chapter 14 of this book (thanks John for doing the legwork on that), the Mul Branova and golden trio and Bran’s three women are all said to have been prepared. I agree that they won’t have SAA or any other abilities recognised by the system but they’ve all been told. Plus Simone and Gloria have SAA already from how they initiated in book 1 (F rank, but still the actual recognised skill). I’m not sure what soul defensive arts Bran told them about, so doubt they’ll all develop F rank soul resilience or anything, but SAA and the theory behind it, plus your total control of your soul in soul combat was already discussed. It’s just a 2 or 3 chapter continuity error, nothing we’ve not seen before. Hopefully it’ll get corrected before print.

Iron Akela

He did prepare. Bruce just forgot and so didn’t include the plethora of things Bran briefed the Mul Branova, golden trio, and his women on. He also forgot that Simone and Gloria already have soul absorption arts. Without the prep, you’re totally right… and if this extreme continuity error isn’t corrected before print it will be Bruce’s biggest faux pas yet in any series. Hopefully it’ll get corrected before then.

Iron Akela

They were told about the soul stuff, Bruce just forgot when he wrote this chapter

Iron Akela

Sorry but don’t like this story line.

Richard Anderson

Is it me, or has RD 3 been boring compared to the two previous books?

Jake Thomas

You dislike it as mich as me?😂

Julian Lachner

Ok I double checked but in chapter 14 they explicitly said they were all taught the soul absorption arts, so all of them including all the mul-Branova and the three SS ranked trio. So apparently Bruce spaced that by the time he got to these chapters. Hopefully he will fix it when he goes back over everything.

John

Stuff like how the player has almost complete control over their soul and how the demon is only as strong there as the host allows it to be feels like it should have been part of a mandatory training session before they all went into the vault. Anyway I am looking forward to General Zaydelin getting a reality check when he tries to possess Bran. Interesting fusion ability. Wonder how it eorks in the physical world. Did they just do the pose from Dragon Ball Z/Super lol?

ArbabSB

Yep. Honestly, it makes me wonder if Bran might not be anywhere near as impressive as he seemed when he's not cheating by relying on future knowledge. Afterall, this vault is something he knows little about, but even that little bit he did know he didn't prepare for.

hawkshe .

These last 2 chapters have really destroyed my impression of Bran, total drop in his level of “Bran-ness”… Like, you knew this whole thing was a trap so demons could possess people and you didn’t prepare anyone to fight back against that? He says he doesn’t want to lose any of the higher level players and that all of the Mul Branova are precious to him, yet he does nothing to prepare for it…

Geo

I guess you could make the argument that it's difficult to teach them how to absorb souls without actual souls to absorb as a practical lesson. But in these recent chapters it seems like Bran didn't even provide a theoretical explanation of SAA or even the basics of what to do when a demon tries to possess you, like "you have almost complete control over your soul and the demon is only as strong there as you allow it to be", which should have been mandatory information before entering this demonic possession factory.

ArbabSB

that was weird

James A. Murphy

I am gonna imagine a 3 way fusion dance

SiI3nt

Lol, these three have more control over their soul spaces than others. Though the fusion ability is cool, did the Demon really need the stance? Someone's been watching too much anime 😜 But glad to see where their loyalties lie...

Jamie R

Yeah that’s the feeling I’m getting too

Iron Akela

Well that’s an interesting skill. I wonder if it’ll be just their souls that have fused or their bodies too… I suspect the former as it was a soul space and those demons manifested like that. These three were also have been said to have been briefed before hand about soul absorption arts

Iron Akela

Them not knowing the SAA makes sense. Why teach it to the spies?

Rainer

Why do i have the feeling when they come out of the Vault its will only be 1 or 2 Months before the Rapture
