RD 2 Ch 25
Added 2024-08-19 10:00:16 +0000 UTCAN - These chapters are locked for editing for me right now, but I noticed comments about him drink the blood from the lion. I don't know how it got there, but the original was him putting it in his spatial ring. Anyway, I will fix that when I get things back from the editor.
Chapter 25
Nyx and I got clear of the birds, with piles of loot left behind us in a trail.
“Wow. You are a lot stronger.” Nyx uncoiled from me, her hand lingering on my bicep before she blushed and pulled away.
“Going to take you with me. Promise me you’ll keep my abilities quiet?” I felt like I could trust Nyx, but it still needed to be said.
She nodded. “Got some super special vampire ones that you want to keep hidden? I’m not so naive to think that this much money and power comes with a lot of greed. That, and my father said to trust no one.”
“Do you trust me?” I asked, not quite sure why the answer to that question felt important to me.
“Yeah… yeah, I do.” She looked down at the ground, and her tail played in the dirt. “Alright, let's get going. I need to practice moving with this thing.”
“If you can use your hair to pick up the loot, then take this.” I handed her a D-ranked ring after funneling everything over to the B-ranked one. It was a tight fight and less organized, but I’d live.
“Right.” She took it and handed the ring to one of her snakes who bobbed up and down at me.
I drew my hand to the side, and a blade of my own blood grew from my palm as several cyclops came out of the forest, attracted to our voices.
“Bran, they are strong! Stronger than Zane,” Nyx said, but her voice held more awe than fear.
I shot out a series of Blood Bolts as the monsters charged us. “Don’t worry. Sanguine Locking.” I said it aloud for her benefit.
All the cyclops locked up mid-stride and fell over.
“Go ahead and get to work. You can use those serpents and try to work on their skill rank.” I walked up to the first monster and stabbed my sword through its back.
“Holy shit.” Nyx slithered over tentatively until she was in range, and her serpents attacked in rapid fire on another cyclops. “They can’t move at all?”
“Not while I’m using the ability on them.” I moved on to the second while she was still trying to get her F-ranked Envenom ability to trigger on hers.
“How long does it last?” She assumed there must be a limit.
And there was, but with my spirit compared to theirs, it wasn’t going to fade anytime soon. “I’ll warn you if I need to release it. Right now, holding these is trivial. Might get harder or something might have a way to resist it.”
“Could you… uh… do this to a person?” she asked.
I glanced down at the cyclops I was killing and then back up to meet her eyes. “Yes. I can. Zane or Galen would be completely powerless if I did this to them.”
She let out a soft whistle and failed to inspect me again. “I really want to see your stats.”
“They are much higher than you are probably even thinking…” I trailed off, wondering if I should lie and dig myself deeper or tell the truth. In the end, I hesitated and let the second half of that sentence die before it reached my lips.
“Incredible. Can you tell me what your bloodline is? Or is that dangerous information to share?” she asked.
“It’s a titan bloodline like the Borrson Clan. Also, I might get physically larger as a result.” I sighed at that statement. “Going to have to find an answer to that.”
“Why?” She didn’t seem to mind.
“When you are sixteen feet tall, nothing really works. Your hand fits into nothing. Doorways, cars, planes. Everything is built for people, not giants.” Even in my past life, it started to become a little inconvenient.
“Oh.” Her mouth made a circle, and her eyes went wide. “Do they have giant… you know…”
I laughed. “Yes. That becomes pretty difficult with the size, too.”
“You should really do something about it then…” She blushed and trailed off before she perked back up. “Because of your two girlfriends. They’d be disappointed.”
I chuckled. She was a little infatuated with me. Probably because I’d been a big support during this instance. Afterwards, it would fade.
After killing the fifth cyclops, Nyx picked up a weapon and started to help her snakes, smashing hers with a femur until the dungeon dissolved the monster.
“Oh, it ranked up.” She smiled as the snakes danced around her, stretching out farther than before.
I started walking. We didn’t have time to stand around.
“Right. Looting. Go, little snake.” She handed it a ring, and it quickly danced from pile to pile with the ring, sucking up the loot before returning to her as she hurried to keep up with my long strides.
After a moment, she hit the stride of her slithering and actually caught up.
“I’m going to shout to bring them to us. Call out if your serpents notice anything.” I smiled at her before cupping my hands around my mouth and letting loose a yell loud enough that Nyx covered her ears.
In the distance, trees cracked, and cyclops roared in response.
I grinned from ear to ear. It was time to start clearing this instance.

“What do you mean exactly?” Zeus and Hercules sat hunched over a table while Circe stood to the side, leaning on the wall while a few of their close allies lingered around the room.
Simone was in the room because Circe wasn’t letting the woman out of her sight after two attempts to capture her had failed.
Galen was on the other end of the crystal ball. “The Nemean Lion was like a kitten to him. He knocked it around like it was nothing. The monster had over three thousand stats, half that in strength. It would have crushed Zane and me working together.”
“How is he that strong?” Hercules frowned. “Did the great ancestor give him that strength?”
“He didn’t say… uh…” Galen scratched his head. “He was pretty pissed at me. Part of my group was separated by the lion, and after he defeated it, he realized they didn’t have food and were in poor condition. He berated me for not taking care of them and not informing him of their situation.”
“He’s not wrong,” Circe spoke up. “At least he prioritized taking care of his clan members. That’s a good sign. Is he there?”
“No. He sent me back and left. Something about there being one more person who was separated.” Galen looked around.
Zane’s voice came from a distance. “Nyx. She was traveling with him earlier. I think he left her in a sanctuary to come to break up a fight here.”
“Right, he practically asked me to pass on that the clan can’t force him, and he’ll treat the clan how he finds they are treating… Simone, was it?” Galen hesitated on the name.
“That would be me,” Simone called out, walking up beside Circe.
“Then I think we should let Simone see more of the Clan. We certainly wouldn’t want her to feel cooped up at Odyssey.” Zeus gave a fake grandfatherly smile, though the white beard helped sell the look.
“I’m quite comfortable with Circe. She’s treated me well, and I know Bran had plans to join her. If nothing because he enjoys traveling.” Simone smiled sweetly.
Circe couldn’t really pick apart anything in her demeanor, but she knew a rejection when she heard one.
“Well, that seems unfair,” Hercules added in. “With this power that the ancestor gave him, it would be very important that there is no perceived favoritism.”
“Bran won’t have a problem with weathering others’ perceptions of him. He will take issue with unkind treatment, though,” Simone answered politely, though it barely blunted the words.
Both of the old men of their branches were clearly irritated that they weren’t being offered the reins to steer the carriage.
Bran presented a perfect opportunity for them to break the stalemate. After all, if one of the branches controlled the initiation and the Heros Bloodline, then they would undoubtedly be able to rise above the other. Even if the ability was not able to give better bloodlines to one, the perception would keep initiates more interested in joining the one that had more control.
And, showing that he could strip someone of their bloodline was an entirely different level. So many of the lower and mid-level of the clan leaned on their bloodline for a good portion of their strength.
Bran would be able to end any conflict instantly, not to mention if his abilities extended beyond the Heros bloodline… He’d be a potent weapon against the other clans.
“I think the most important thing is that we lock all information about Bran down.” Circe tried to sidestep the dick-measuring contest. “Bran has become a singular weak point for the clan moving forward, along with potentially being an extremely powerful weapon. If this is a system ability, there’s no reason it shouldn’t work on the other clans.”
Both men frowned in thought and glanced around at the people in the room. “Lock it down,” Zeus said, nodding at Hercules.
“It will be done.”
Circe let out a sigh of relief, happy the two men had finally agreed.
“We could send the entire initiation class to Tartarus,” Hercules offered.
“I could get them all?” A light voice percolated through the room as black mist seeped through the floor and pulled itself together into a beautiful woman with chestnut brown hair that seemed to glow with color because of how pale she was. She was carrying a daffodil and used it to swat playfully at Circe.
Circe smacked it away. “Pers, you’re early.”
“CeeCee, don’t be like that.” Persephone was all smiles, but Circe knew her personality could change in an instant into a violent gale that swallowed everything around her never to be seen again. “Someone was trying to poke into Tartarus, an Elle Heros. I need her handed over, pretty please.”
The room went quiet at the statement.
“If she’s already dead, her body will suffice.” Persephone took a long sniff of the flower and sighed.
“Aunt.” Zeus bowed his head respectfully. “There was part of the conversation that you missed. We cannot touch Elle Heros at present.”
Given that he was the second of his name, Zeus was actually the youngest present. That white beard was all an act. Circe wanted to roll her eyes but kept her decorum.
“Nephew.” Persephone tapped him with the daffodil. “Why not?”
Hercules gestured at the orb around the table. “The initiates in the instance have troubling news. The level of the monsters is rising back to the original one hundred and thirty. Meanwhile, one of the initiates says that the Blood Dragon is going into hibernation and has given him the ability to control the Heros Bloodline.”
“The solution is obvious,” Persephone said. “Once the instance has stabilized, we go in and verify the claims. I, for one, would love to meet the ancestor when I’m not a weak little level one.” She waved her flower around angrily. “It is so vital to our clan that it is about time that we leaders had a face-to-face conversation with the ancestor.”
Zeus rubbed his chin while Hercules nodded resolutely.
Circe checked Simone’s reaction out of the corner of her eye. It was the first time that the woman had been worried, but none of the others had noticed. “Is that wise? If it has entered hibernation, it might not take well to us waking it.”
Persephone scoffed. “It will have to adjust. The ancestor has acted within his pact with our clan, but I, for one, think it needs to understand the strength of the clan it now works for.” She was pointed in those last few words. “And I will still have Elle Heros. No one is to know the location of Tartarus except me. For all these years, we have stayed secret because we have kept an absolute veil of secrecy, only myself crossing between it. That some young woman has tried to breach it, I take that personally.”
“She’s under my care for the time being. Perhaps we should wait until the matter of the Clan’s bloodline is settled before doing anything rash,” Circe tried.
Persephone turned on her, the woman’s eyes glowing a ghostly green and bubbling at the edges as if souls were trying to push their way out and away from her anger. “Ceecee. When did you get so bold as to defy me?” The room was subsumed in darkness.
“Stop with the theatrics.” Circe sighed. “Matters of the clan should come above any of the individual branches. In the same way we were just discussing putting everything aside to deal with Bran, that includes Tartarus.” Wherever Persephone had taken everyone in the fourth branch, she had grown increasingly powerful.
Persephone’s eyes flashed before they returned to normal. She bopped Circe on the nose with the daffodil. “Silly, Ceecee. We have time before we deal with Bran. I’ll just go and get her myself in the meantime.” The woman exploded into a tornado of twisting darkness and disappeared from the room.
“Are you going to do anything?” Simone asked in the silent room.
“Elle Heros is already captured,” Zeus answered simply. “One of the reasons that Persephone is in charge of Tartarus is that no one can follow her, nor keep up with her.”
“Well then”—Circe put an arm around Simone, hoping Simone would be able to calm Bran down when he came back and found out what had just happened—“I’ll be taking care of Simone. Please, both of you stop Pers from getting into too much trouble while she’s here.”

A secret instance or Vault seem much more likely than a personal pocket dimension. Pocket realms are always balance ruining levels of overpowered in a story. In danger? Retreat into the pocket realm. Hiding? Same thing. Need a nap? Pocket realm! It just doesn’t work for a story like this with a more serious tone.

2024-08-19 17:36:15 +0000 UTCWell, I'm glad to see that Bran isn't a totally dense idiot about Nyx's interest in him. He just thinks she has a crush on him that will fade once they're out of the instance and safe again. And I do think that's a reasonable assumption for him to make, even though I'm sure he's wrong. From Bran's perspective, Nyx is still an emotional youth, and he's assuming that she isn't experienced enough to realize it's just a crush and that their relationship wouldn't work long term. Plus, Bran is probably also partially blinding himself by pre-deciding that he wouldn't enjoy dating any of these "young kids" due to their immaturity compared to his soul age. A big part of his attraction to Simone over the working girls was Simone's older age and maturity. What he's not considering is that Nyx clearly likes his personality as well as his power and heroics. Bran has already shown a lot of care and understanding to Nyx, helping her learn to fight, helping her accept her new form, and showing that he still finds attractive and normal after she transformed. Combine all of that with Bran's good looks, and it's no wonder that Nyx is smitten already! Like Nyx said when Bran mentioned his poison resistance, he's "too damn perfect" for her. Now she just needs to win him over, which I expect will be easy once Simone gets involved.

2024-08-19 16:46:15 +0000 UTCThat would mean she could essentially create an Instance as those are essentially pocket dimensions overlapping the current world. She could also just have control over an Instance and have a unique ability to leave and enter it at will.

2024-08-19 16:37:36 +0000 UTCI think Persephone isn't a demon. I think she has a power to seal people into a pocket realm she calls Tartarus, and she gains power from everyone sealed inside. This would still explain all her shadiness while still allowing her to survive Bran's wrath. She'd still be sketchy as fuck, but in a way that Bran could work with, once his mom is released safe and sound.
Nicholas Kratzer
2024-08-19 16:29:35 +0000 UTCI think it's possible. The Soul Devouring Arts are supposedly entirely lost on Earth, besides Bran knowing them from the future, but I don't think it's been said that all Soul Arts are lost. So Persephone might have the ability to read people's souls and memories, just without the ability to eat their souls for power and skills. Soul magic would certainly make sense for Persephone, based on her myths.
Nicholas Kratzer
2024-08-19 16:25:09 +0000 UTCI see two possibilities for what's going on with Persephone: 1) She's a demon, or is knowingly or unknowingly working with demons. Tartarus is actually a Vault of Pandora that she's locking the members of her branch into, getting them possessed by demons. However, that doesn't directly explain how Persephone is constantly getting stronger to the extent that it worries Circe. Maybe the demons are channeling power to her from within the Vault, but I feel that doesn't work with what we know of the power system so far. Also, if Tartarus is a Vault, then I think Bran's mom would be fully possessed by the time Bran could get free of the instance and save her, and full possession is irreversible as I recall, because it destroys the original soul. No way Bruce is killing off Bran's mom already. And it's a bit boring if every major villain is Demons every time, so I hope it's not this case for this reason alone. 2) Persephone isn't a demon at all. She instead has a unique ability that lets her make a pocket dimension of sorts that she can imprison people within, aka Tartarus. She then gains XP and power directly based on the strength and number of people imprisoned with Tartarus, so she's just been shoving everyone she can it there, prisoners and Tartarus branch members alike, explaining why she's growing in power faster than everyone else. That's why she keeps the "location" of Tartarus so secret, and why no one ever comes back from it, not even clan members. She doesn't want people to know that it's actually all a skill of hers, as that would put an even bigger target on her, and the other clan heads would probably team up against her in case she's actually killing and absorbing everyone she puts in Tartarus. Persephone is playing the long game here, letting the clan bring her people to easily absorb. Also there's probably some limitations on the Tartarus skill that prevents her from absorbing the leaders of every clan to boost her power and take absolute control, like the ability has a long cool down based on the power of the target, or absorbing someone strong takes a long time and leaves her vulnerable. And she may actually be loyal to the Heros clan, and justifies what she's doing as necessary to become strong enough to imprison Shiva, as her branch is supposed to. Her plan to deal with Shiva is leveling her Tartarus skill as high as possible, probably SSS at this point, and having enough power from prisoners that she can imprison Shiva with Tartarus as well. She doesn't have to be as powerful as Shiva, her skill just needs to be enough to overwhelm his defenses in the right moment, possibly after Shiva has been weakened by others first. I assume that the inside of Tartarus is in time stasis or it is a full pocket realm prison that all the Tartarus branch members and the prisoners are living in, rather than the pocket realm just eating people. Bran's mom has to be alive in there for Bran to be able to rescue her from it. I expect Tartarus will be a fully explorable pocket dimension, because Bran and crew fighting their way through a magical dimension prison to rescue his mom sounds like a fun min-arc. If I'm right about Persephone not being a demon and Tartarus being a skill, then it makes sense why Tartarus seemed to be missing in Bran's old timeline. Persephone was probably killed by the demons early on, and everyone in Tartarus was either trapped in the pocket dimension permanently, or died with Persephone, explaining why the whole branch was gone. Or Persephone really is a demon, and she and her branch just betrayed everyone in the old timeline, and the rest of the Heros clan covered up their connection to the traitors to save face.

2024-08-19 16:21:16 +0000 UTCI wonder if Bran had seen Persephone in his pervious life but did not know she was part of the Heros Clan. Persephone being the oldest of the 4 branches I am curious if we have more Elders part of the Heros clan. I had to go back and check Circe’s stats and Brans current stats are close to when he meet her currently except for Vitality. If Persephone close to her in stats even a 1000 more in each stats. Bran’s level plus stat points at the end of the instance could be a good fight. Somebody mentioned if Bran got a blood mist movement skill in an earlier chat. I don’t think Persephone would have anywhere to run. If the training goes to Tartarus right after this instead of taking a break to talk to Simone this is going to get real interesting. What info does Persephone have on Bran and what info is she going to get from Elle is going to be the big question before Bran leave the instance and goes to Tartarus.

2024-08-19 16:12:01 +0000 UTCI think Bloodline Manipulation scales off it's own grade alone. As I recall, it's currently S rank for Bran, and he was able to fully suppress and remove S ranked Bloodlines, but could only partially suppress SSS rank Bloodlines. Bran just needs to use the skill a ton to rank it up to SSS.

2024-08-19 15:41:05 +0000 UTCI’m also looking forward to seeing everyone’s reaction to not finding the ancestor inside the instance.

2024-08-19 12:58:26 +0000 UTCWe still don’t know who poisoned his mom either. Wouldn’t be surprised if Tartarus did if they go on about that. With them not being in the last war, Tartarus being metaphorically connected to demons, and the way she is acting makes her appear to be demon like. It explains that they would go after weak and or isolated members before invading and why they take a hardline stance against people looking into them. I can see the three branches unifying to crush the 4th and start off preparing for their prophesied time.

2024-08-19 11:42:39 +0000 UTCOk the short chapters seem to get shorter every damn time. Kinda getting annoying since I don't have the full book in front of me to just keep going. 2024-08-19 11:25:57 +0000 UTCShe did tell Bran about them. How each of the four branches were created to oppose one of the other main clans. 2024-08-19 11:24:33 +0000 UTCIf Persephone knows some Soul Arts (likely) she’ll be able to find out the truth about Bran through Elle’s soul. I think she is being set up as a major antagonist. Zeus & Hercules just kind of feel like selfish dumb brutes at this point. I believe Tartarus is in that tomb thing Bran is set to unlock at the end of the year. Which could mean his mom will be long corrupted if it’s full of demons….

I mean from the day he woke her up, she belittled and distrusted her even after she knew what he went through and what he did to save her. She provoked him and acted irrational , ignored his warninges and even before she woke up, for her her own pride was more importaant than he was. 2024-08-19 10:53:05 +0000 UTCI wonder what Bloodline Manipulation does work off of, since the leech's stats were almost all in Spirit. Persephone, given her mythological roots, might have the highest Spirit stat in the clan aside from Bran, but would it be anywhere near as high as the leech'es?
ArbabSB
2024-08-19 10:48:17 +0000 UTCBran seems to be almost deliberately avoiding seeing Nyx's feelings for what they are. As for Persephone, she seems incredibly suspicious the way she can overrule the other branch leaders, but is herself unanswerable to anyone. If she's not already in league with the demons, she's almost definitely up to something shady to the rest of the clan's detriment.
ArbabSB
2024-08-19 10:42:41 +0000 UTCAh, so Persephone can act unilaterally to imprison (or worse) clan members under another branch leader's protection, cannot be observed by the rest of the clan, and is growing stronger all the time. She's definitely not a massive security risk that could be in league with the demons, nope! /s. Bran just got his mom back after 500 years of missing her. Add in Thorin, and Persephone just lit the fuse for a huge bomb that's about to blow up in her face.

2024-08-19 10:30:26 +0000 UTCSo the obvious is true eh, Tartarus is blatant traitors, or so far up their own ass they would sacrifice the clan for themselves, i.e. traitors. I don't see Bran faring well against Persephone without another soulrealm ex machina. Too bad the Bloodline Control thing doesn't scale on spirit stats.

2024-08-19 10:30:23 +0000 UTCAh, fair. I thought she was the one that told Bran about them on the plane and that he should join them, not Odyssey. We then later learned her grudge with Odyssey and Circe. Maybe Elle pushed him that way to investigate them? Persephone's reactions are... Off. Extreme almost. I don't know whether she'll be an ally or enemy at this point, but she's giving off major villain vibes with her behaviour. Then again, she could be Ikta without the Harem potential. Bat shit crazy, but a useful ally?

2024-08-19 10:24:02 +0000 UTCDepending on what Persephone does with Elle, how she treats her and if she’ll let her go when the time comes, she might survive. Bran and Thorin will not be happy! It could result in the whole clan being wiped out… or turned into a tiny little pissant sect or something. I mean, imagine everyone in the clan without an SSS rank bloodline suddenly losing it and being Sanguine Locked. Hell that may work on Zeus and Hercules, given Bran’s spirit stat. Persephone may well have just utterly fucked the Heros Clan! Of course, this could be a good excuse for Persephone to learn about the future and Bran’s experiences. But still, she’s risking his ire, and the ire of the Clan Killer! It might also be a good way for Bran to learn about Tartarus, and maybe why they did fuck all last time around. Good to see Bran letting Nyx in, though I think he’s wrong about her infatuation fading.

2024-08-19 10:17:03 +0000 UTCWow Persephone, what could possibly go wrong with having a whole branch of the clan never seen from again. Led by someone who keeps getting much stronger and no one can follow. SSS Soul Gaze to find a demon anyone.

2024-08-19 10:15:35 +0000 UTCYeah, something going on with Tartarus for it to be all hush hush and secret. I thought Elle was pushing Bran to go Tartarus, so why is she snooping around? Guess I was under the assumption that Elle was Odyssey had a falling out and went Tartarus... But then I remembered she'd met Brans father and basically never really returned to the clan. I would most definitely enjoy seeing Persephone taken down a peg or two by Bran once he gets out of the instance. No-one touches family. And if Persephone's tries something with Elle... Bran is going to tear that place apart. He killed the Leech, wonder how Persephone stacks up? Enjoying seeing things develop with Nyx, but I noted Bran thought her crush was only infatuation during the instance. Would be good to have his eyes opened once they're out. The more I learn about the Heros clan, the more I see why the deserved their fate in the last timeline
