Suggestion survey: call for shorter-scope topics!

When it comes to the Extra History video schedule we are currently looking at early spring 2019, and writer/director Rob Rath is going to be taking some well-deserved paternity leave sometime around that season! Anticipating our need for flexibility and our desire to make even more patron-chosen topics as fully realized Extra History videos, we are looking for suggestions for shorter series (2-3 episodes).

When we have our next poll in November, we'll end up picking the top 2 winners to fill out the schedule block after the Irish Potato Famine airs. (The plan, currently, is to still have a Lies episode in the schedule but it would cover both of these shorter series, one at a time).

While the following list is not at all intended to bias anyone as to what they should pick, here are some very general ideas to consider if you are not sure about what a smaller Extra History series would look like.

Some notes about your suggestions:

Oof I didn’t get to vote. I would have said Paul von Lettow-Vorbeck

Lewis Farberman

Aleistar Crowley, one of the most influential & mysterious occultists of the 20th century. From founding Thelemia to the obscure workings of his arcane research & rituals, this misunderstood visionary could use a thorough examination considering his mainstream obscurity & his controversial practices/beliefs. (I believe he will pass the pre-1920 rule. While he died in the 40s, the majority of his career takes place well before then.)

Joseph A.

The Diet of Porvoo 1809, when Finland became Russian.

Jonathan Luoto

well yeah, so has much of the other content covered by EC but that's not the point is it. The way Extra Credits covers the information makes it easy and fun for people to learn about. Great for my younger siblings who cant stand to sit through a lot of the historical docu-series that I normally watch on YouTube

Sukhchan Nahal

in general it has. it's very easy to find Archimedes documentaries.

Thomas Alfred Weaver

I decided to suggest Amundsen and Scott's 1911-12 race for the South Pole.

Simen Engebretsen

John Paul Jones Navel Attack on England during the revolutionary war

siberianbull9

I remember the team expressing an interest in Uesugi Kenshin and Takeda Shingen during the Sengoku Jidai series, so I suggested them.

General Luigi

Innovators of Dayton. We all know and love the wright brothers, but what about some of the other great innovators. Would love to see Kettering or Patterson get some recognition.

AFrozen10-0

I wonder if that's something that could be covered by Extra Credits?

Cindy Franklin

Not my Extra History though, to my recollection.

Cindy Franklin

Wow! With that much, looks like he should have an entire series!

Cindy Franklin

I suggested Robert Fortune myself. An interesting little tale there. I'm excited to see what options show up later! ^_^

Cindy Franklin

I don't know if this will work as a topic for a single episode but how about the Treaty of Easton, It was as a treaty singed by British colonial governors and 13 Indian nations during the french and Indian war

Kyle Diantonio

Hasan ibn-sabbath, founder of the mysterious Assassin order and perfect for 2-3 episodes to cover his order's history!

Ryan Wojciechowski

Norman Conquest, 1066 hugely influential only 17 days long.

GooGhoul

Got my topic, The Aryans and their Establishment of the Indian Caste System, not much is known about the Aryan but their influence has had reverberation all the way to the mid 20th century

Billiam Bones

Which one?

Rossum

Next time I'll suggest the Medieval Tibet Empire founded by Songtsen Gampo. Tibet is famous for its culture, but if that's the case then I want to see it in its prime and golden age.

Thomas Alfred Weaver

Has it?

Sukhchan Nahal

Archimedes has been done before many times.

Thomas Alfred Weaver

Philipines deserve a full episode, but this does deserve a mention.

Thomas Alfred Weaver

Peter the Great deserves a full episode, he changed Russia forever

Thomas Alfred Weaver

also they have a Civ V mod. https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=257018080

Trung Sisters: their revolt lasted only 3 years and was crushed: but their legacy is still strong today, and was a rallying cry during the Indochina Wars and the many Vietnamese-Chinese Wars. Also: twin princesses on war elephants! https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Trung_sisters'_rebellion

Thomas Alfred Weaver

Archimedes! His war machines made in defense of Syracuse from the Romans would be a cool mini series. The Archimedes Screw alone is worth an episode

Sukhchan Nahal

I suggested Takeda Shingen. Ever since Extra History mentioned Takeda Shingen in the Sengoku Jidai series, I am fascinated to learn how much of an impact he had in this period and why he is remembered well in Japan, so I would like to hear what Extra History has to say. I hope he fits in 3 episodes, don't know for sure.

Xenin

Point, missed that stipulation...eh, still gonna let it stand. I think it's mostly to avoid controversial political topics anyway.

themunck

That is a fantastic idea !

Guidrion

I went with the story of Leo Africanus. Born in Granada right after the end of the Reconquista, traveled to Mali, went on a diplomatic mission to Constantinople, got taken as a slave and served under the Medicis at papal court right at the beginning of the protestant reformation and the reign of Soliman the magnifiscent. It's crossover time!

Guidrion

I submitted the Halifax Explosion again. It was in the poll for "Disasters" last time but I think it would also make a great 2-3 part short series too!

Joël Quenneville

Now I totally want to see EH cover the Dreyfus affair!!! That seems like exactly the kind of event that they cover best. A 2-3 part series would be fantastic!

Joël Quenneville

I'd love to see some more ancient Extra History!

Joël Quenneville

I don't think the invention of the Internet counts as pre-1920, but I agree it'd be fun to see.

Nathan Black

Peter the Great after the Northern War?

Hade

But only because I feel Margrete I deserves a full series >.

themunck

Let's go with a classic. The invention of the Internet, from ARPANET until the launch of the World Wide Web.

themunck

Submitted mine, the Hyksos and the birth of the New Kingdom of Egypt

William Warren

Crime and scandals- the Dreyfus Affair, Murder Inc and other juicy tales could be done in a short time.

Rossum

You know, it's curious. It was the Saragarhi short episode what got me to become a Patreon, and since then, I have suggested Carrión and the Cagayan Battles a few times. This one would be no less. A series of small skirmishes in the Philipines between spanish soldiers, and japanese and chinese pirates (inclusing ronin veterans of wars from the Sengoku period), that resulted in a victory of 40 soldiers, against a fleet of around a 1000 pirates. Probably the first of the videos you would have it occupied talking about the short history of the Spanish Empire in the islands until the moment, and the life of Carrión, but the shortness of the encounters would make it perfectly fit in those 2 or 3 videos.
