Early Access! Great Northern War Part 3

Comments

The more I see of wars, the more it seems as if two or more men set fire to a house, then proceed to fight in it, each hoping to win before the house burns down.

Bill Lemmond

I'll ping James to see if he's read that particular book and bring this point up with him as a possible topic for the Lies episode!

Extra History

Our artists draw the cutest horses, I don't even know what it is. ;)

Extra History

I'm jealous of the sushi! ::mental note: get sushi soon::

Extra History

And it is definitely not the kind of situation that Charles likes to find himself in.

Extra History

We certainly try to keep the quality level up throughout a series, but what we like, others may not! I will be happy to take this feedback to our team for future writing notes, though you should know that the rest of the Great Northern War set has already been written and entered production. Hopefully we've delivered on the rest of the series in a way that you'll like!

Extra History

but also, skis!

Extra History

While Walpole continues to freeze him out of everything because Walpole does NOT approve of this Augustus fellow...

Extra History

Yeah, it's pretty much just anglicizing the name. It is always weird making that decision about what to call someone. -_-

Extra History

Mr. Napolen and Mr.Hitler!!! Come and see this video!

Andrew MacKenzie

Ah yes, but what happens when the Russians invade Finland(controlled by Sweden)....EVERYTHING BREAKS

Bumble

Crikey! People joke about the Russian winter, seemingly thinking that they're the first person to ever joke about the Russian winter lol Anyways, the Russian winter did not beat the Swedish army. I hope that Extra Credits have read the excellent book "The Battle that shook Europe – Poltava and the birth of the Russian Empire" by Peter Englund. It is probably the most detailed account of the battle available and by reading it, it's pretty clear that Creutz's failed cavalry charged, coupled with Rehnskiöld's failure to properly communicate orders led to the defeat, not the winter. The Swedish army actually fought pretty damn well all considered. I had an ancestor who died at Poltava, and I get quite tired with how the bravery and accomplishments of the Swedish soldiers at the battle often get swept under the rug

Norraya

I gotta love the Swedish horses in this episode, so cute.

Daniel Hood

For the same reason we Peter I isn't called Pyotr

Alex Kyriacou

Eating sushi and watching history. This is definitely the life. lol

Christopher Smith

My favorite history book calls this sort of situation trying to stave off defeat rather than try to achieve victory.

Michael Waisfeld

That may be, but as this is an English-language series I only talked about that point :)

Antti Björklund

This was a bit too ovious regarding what will happen next. But it was an improvement over last where the joking was most of the episode. And I was hoping you would mention the Finnish prisoners building St Petersburg. Maybe more about Finland in the future? Hopefully I didn't sound too critical but I have been waiting for this series for a long time and the first episode was great so I wanted that level to stay.

Sara Samaletdin

That's not specific to the english speakers, as we French have the same bad habit (except we "frenchicize" the names).

Iforgotmyname

It's not Charles XII had as much evidence and meming about this as we do now.

Sara Samaletdin

So scorched-earth and Russian Winter strike again? Does no one learn from the past that you don't invade Russia unless you are the Mongols?

Aidan Forero

Thank you for clarifying. My Swedish friend and I had to settle the debate with much googling

BrandonC

Foreign names are usually anglicized in English-speaking literature.

Antti Björklund

Had this War occurred during the 20th Century I Think we are now at the Point where in Augustus of Poland-Lithuania would probably be Thinking, “This just goes to show that Winston Churchill is NEVER there when you need him. He would've Fought them on the Beaches...he would have Fought them on the Landing Grounds...”

Martin Verran

Is there a reason you guys don't call the king of Sweden "Carl"? I am actually visiting Sweden, and no one had any idea who Charles was
