Gotcha

Brian Rose

We do it a bit differently now - we take topic suiggestions every month, but we only do the drawing every other month or so, usually right before the Lies episode. So these topics have already gone into the bowl for drawing, but we haven't drawn them yet.

Extra History

So the deadline has come and gone; have you guys already drawn for the next poll?

Brian Rose

I meant more typical in the sense that when people think of "monarchy," typically it's hereditary monarchy that comes to mind. Whereas elective monarchy is less present in the contemporary psyche so to speak. Historically speaking, both variations of monarchies have of course had their time in the sun.

Christopher Smith

Going straight for the most cheerful stories I see. I mean, it's no Congo Free State or German West Africa, but the Boxer Rebellion is still absolutely horrifying to read about.

Christina Maria Jessen

Not sure it's fair to call hereditary monarchies typical. Elective monarchy was quite common throughout the middle ages and only slowly died out. I think the last European one was the Commonwealth which didn't abandon it until the eve of its death in 1791. We've also seen forms of the concept in other parts of the world.

Christina Maria Jessen

Nice :)

Sara Samaletdin

I usually allow a little wiggle room. You're good!

Extra History

I just became a patron to suggest a series. The top posts says now however that it ended in July 3rd at midnight but I was still able to send the form. Is the time difference really so big? Anyway just hope it got in.

Sara Samaletdin

Or as it's known here: "Hey remember that one time Vermont actually mattered? No not the Civil War, the other one"

t.

Thanks! Yeah, I didn't see your suggestion on the list after I read your comment so I figured I would check.

Extra History

But I did now.

Sheridan'sReiver13

No... i was not aware that needed to be done.

Sheridan'sReiver13

As Christopher said, make sure you send it to the link (I'll post it at the end here to make sure you see it) but yeah, we'd definitely find that interesting and love to take it on: https://goo.gl/forms/jHLJnlP7h9VSSNEj2

Extra History

Brazilian Empire would be grand!

Extra History

It is fun! I'm glad people are sharing.

Extra History

More Egypt or more South America sounds good! Whichever you pick, make sure you send it to the form linked above... and here, because why not: https://goo.gl/forms/jHLJnlP7h9VSSNEj2

Extra History

We'd love to do that! Did you submit through the link to make sure your suggestion gets on the form? https://goo.gl/forms/jHLJnlP7h9VSSNEj2

Extra History

That might have to be a multi-part series that jumps around to several cases of such revolutions since the Digger events were so short but as a concept, I dig it. B :-) B:-) B-)

Extra History

Uh-oh, is Walpole gonna get jealous? ;)

Extra History

I'd love to do that one! Calling dibs right now if it wins. -Soraya

Extra History

Who doesn't love a good poison king!

Extra History

Yeah, we talked about doing the Children's Crusade back when we were doing the First Crusade. It would be, as you said, a delicate one to tackle, but we are trying to explore better ways to deal with history that's got very fuzzy record-keeping.

Extra History

That sounds fascinating!

Extra History

Good old Billy the Conq!

Extra History

I'd love to talk about more ladies of the sciences, and she'd be within the 1920s limit - she did die in 1940, but most of her important work was done 1920s or before, and that's the rough guideline I try to use. Fair warning, when we get a topic that only has enough material for a one-off (and Annie Jump Cannon is probably that), we try to expand that topic into something more broad, like say... the history of interstellar classification, and then we'd have a specific episode dedicated to Annie Jump Cannon within that larger series. All that being understood, if you want to suggest Annie Jump Cannon through the form, go ahead!

Extra History

Ah-ha, now I see why you were so interested in Shays'. ;)

Extra History

Heck yes! I love Rome, the more ancient the better. Question for you: did you submit your suggestion through the form (linked above)? I don't see it on my list as yet; if you did send it through already, you might want to resend because there seems to have been an error!

Extra History

We gotta have more admirals!

Extra History

Very different indeed, plus I've always been fascinated by electoral monarchies. So very different from the typical hereditary monarchies.

Christopher Smith

You submit that suggestion in the link up top that EH provided in their post. Here everyone is just talking about their submissions. =)

Christopher Smith

Yeah, the Anglophilic Eurocentrism is pretty annoying. Part of why I'm suggesting Margaret I is to shake it up by showing a part of medieval Europe that was vastly different. One where titled nobility were sovereign rulers or their heirs, kings were elected from the relatives of the previous king and a mercantile confederacy was a regional power that could go toe-to-toe with most of the local kingdoms. Just quite different from how most people understand the middle ages.

Christina Maria Jessen

Is this where you'd make a suggestion? I thought it was e-mail based. Anyways, I'd really like to see something about China's military prowess and how it has affected Chinese culture. Confuscious, Sun Tzu, etc. So I think the warring states period would be an interesting topic, or the three kingdoms period as it seems there are more relatable heroes that have come from that time period and some interesting narrative can be taken from that.

Wayne Hong

I wrote the Brazilian Empire again. I'm curious about a ton of what you all are saying too though

Vika

I really like reading what people think would be a good topic. I'm gonna put down the Boxer Rebellion as it would be a good follow up to the Opium Wars.

Tyler McMann

Oh anything Eygypt. Or maybe Cortez and South America.

Tacey Whittemore

I would *love* it someone could put the record straight, and tell about Robert the Bruce (Robert I of Scotland) It's still interesting when told accurately, and has more "Game of Thrones" qualities than "Braveheart" ones.

Sheridan'sReiver13

As for Ching Shih, what can I say I love a good story about pirates and scoundrels. Same reason Pirate Queen Grace O'Malley is on my list, and the Nassau Pirate Republic. lol But I'd say she wasn't entirely a villain, after all she was rebelling against a society which had forced her into prostitution, and she was always looked out for her fellow women and any man under her command was required to do the same or pay dearly for it. Chaotic, militant, maybe not necessarily a villain.

Christopher Smith

Taiping Rebellion has been on my list of topics to propose for so long! And yeah academia is wrought with Anglophilic Eurocentrism, and historically women just don't ever seem to get the credit they deserve. I was thrilled to see the one-off on Mary Anning.

Christopher Smith

There are several, yes. Just don't pick Cixi, with this few women getting covered, someone who is a disaster and a villain isn't exactly what I'd prefer. I'm kinda torn between wanting the big stuff from China that gets ignored because it lacks European, things like the Taiping Rebellion or background on who the Manchu actually were, a desire for more women, a desire for less individuals and more larger topics and the annoyance I've had since first getting medieval history classes in college over how medieval Europe is purely anglo-french in how it's popularly told. Things get really different once you get to Central and Northern Europe and people just sorta ignore that.

Christina Maria Jessen

The Diggers and their suppression, an interesting case of revolutions opening the door for further consideration of the logic behind how society is structured which successful revolutionaries then need to deal with and consolidate their own wins.

Gabriel Nichols

How about a badass woman from China? I'd love to see a Ching Shih series.

Christopher Smith

Glad to hear it Soraya! Perfect for some time during the next year. Canada being 150 years old today.

David Chipman

Time of Troubles, please! Why am I so persiste--it was Shuisky.

General Luigi

I'd love to see a series on Mansa Musa and his epic road trip

Kathryn Johnson

My Suggestion: Mithradates VI - The Poison King of Pontus!

Alistair Gilmour

Perhaps the children's crusade, but that would have to include a discussion about myth vs. history, since the accounts are muddy, and myth making much larger.

Jonathan Luoto

It would be cool to see something on Cnut the Great, Emma of Normandy, and Aethelred and how they set the stage for the eventual Norman invasion of England.

James S Curtis

William the Conqueror. Surprisingly unknown guy, basically inventing the English culture by fusing the Anglo-Saxon and French cultures, in addition to *still* being the most recent foreign invader to conquer London.

Darth Revan

Similarly, I suggested the northeastern theater of the war of 1812.

Jorlem

This might be bumping up too close to the 1920 limit, but I think Astronomer Annie Jump Cannon could make an interesting one-off topic, like your look at Mary Anning.

Sublight Monster

I felt duty bound as a Vermonter to submit the VT Republic, but I REALLY wanted to submit the Paris Commune as well...

t.

Agreed, think I might toss her out there too. As much as I love Chinese history, women are even more underrepresented and she could stand to be better known in wider history nerd circles. Important stuff happened east of the Rhine too in the middle ages.

Christina Maria Jessen

I would love to see you guys do a series on the 7 kings of Rome; I'm a Latin teacher, and there are surprisingly few video resources on the 7 Kings. Or Even if you just did one on the expulsion of the Tarquins and the founding of the Republic.

Sandy Hughes

Suggested Lord Nelson, always wanted to hear more about how he got as far as he did

Chocotwo

Heck yes, we need more powerful ladies!

Extra History

We'd love to give Scotland the spotlight for a while. Good luck!

Extra History

Meeee! Because I'll make James do it. >:) -Soraya

Extra History

Ooh, that would be fun!

Extra History

It would need to be handled with care, I agree, but it would absolutely be valuable to discuss.

Extra History

I've already got dibs on Louis Riel if he does win. :) -Soraya

Extra History

Going for Margarat I again. Probably Medival Europe's finest diplomat and statecrafter.

themunck

You and me both! Honestly, I'm planning to keep suggesting him every month until he appears in the poll.

Jason Fox

And the aftermath. If you could do it. Late 13th and early 14th century. It would be so cool for yoy to show the world aome hostory about my great country.

Tom Partridge

Scottish wars of Independence. They are really interesting. The reasons they happened, The events of the war like the massacre in berwick ypon tweed

Tom Partridge

My suggestion this round: the Investiture Controversy. Who else wants to see EH talk more about Church history?

Brian Rose

I actually did consider suggesting the Amarna Heresy

Brian Rose

I want to see about Hussite wars.

Jaroslav Kotlaba

I'd love to see an honest depiction of Standish's Raid and King Phillip's War. Anything involving conflict between Europeans and American Indians is bound to be the most sensitive and hard to talk about sort of history, but understanding how things got the way they were in all its grim nuance is valuable.

Christopher McVey

Louis Riel? Canada's answer to Ned Kelly? OK, not quite, but he's got an interesting story.

David Chipman

Oh my goodness did I start a thing? I think I'm blushing. lol

Christopher Smith

Ancient history squad!

Extra History

...sure, why not. Lets submit that in again. I'm liking the ancient history.

Nessf

Yeah! Here's hoping the Bronze Age topic intrigues people enough about super mega ancient stuff that they'll be jazzed about my perennial Sargon of Akkad: The First Army, The First Empire suggestion. lol
