Kamehameha the Great - II: Law of the Splintered Paddle - Extra History

Kamehameha had united Hawaii under his rule. But what to do with such power? Simple: make life better for his people.

Kamehameha the Great - II: Law of the Splintered Paddle - Extra History

Comments

Thank you all for this overview of a key period in Hawaii's history. You show Kamehameha wasn't perfect, but was still great. I look forward to the "Lies" episode, when you talk about all the other people who helped him. I think it's an important lesson that "great people" have a lot of help, and are largely great by inspiring others to help them.

Bill Lemmond

Glad you enjoyed it!

Extra History

I mean, he made a volcano erupt and consume his enemies - I feel like he's already proved himself. ;)

Extra History

Aww, thank you for sharing that with us! It really makes us happy to hear that we did a good job.

Extra History

This is the end of the Kamehameha story! Next up: Articles of Confederation Lies, followed by the Bronze Age Collapse.

Extra History

We didn't do that on purpose, but we did realize it once we saw what days the episodes were coming out! Totally happy about that.

Extra History

Couldn't resist. ;)

Extra History

Yeah, Dameol has it, though it can definitely be a confusing distinction. And a good reminder that our worldview is shaped by geocentrism.

Extra History

We're very happy when we can bring a little less known history to light!

Extra History

Actually we've got the Articles of Confederation - Lies episode coming up next! But then the Bronze Age will finally start, and I think it was well worth waiting for. David has been blowing me away with the artwork for that series.

Extra History

Which probably won't of happen or at least not been as "easy" as it was if Kamehameha's descendants didn't start messing with the social order for no reason.

Christian K.

Ah yes - after some more reading I was mistaken. It wasn't the missionaries themselves that headed up the coup - just one of their grandsons.

Nessf

Wrong, you're going to want to blame sugar interests, the US Marines, business groups and the usual suspects, none of whom were missionaries

Jack the Rat

@Christian: I'm going to go with the missionaries that organized a Coup d'état as being at fault here.

Nessf

yep we probably once again see a failure to ensure that a legacy lasts. Kamehameha did a lot of great work uniting Hawaii under one rule, but we see little done about passing on that power in a sure and concise matter to prevent it's downfall.

Andrew Showers

Really who's fault is it that the Hawaiian Empire collapsed? The people who create the power vacuum or the ones who step into it?

Christian K.

Amazing

Martin Ockovsky

sigh religious people

Barghest

Still want my Kamehameha kamehameha wave.

Michael Jebbett

I want you to know that I have a Hawaiian friend who was very, very happy to see this mini-series done.

Nessf

I still say a Coalition between Brie and Stilton would be more effective but I'm not complaining as we seem to have saved ourselves from hard Brexit.

Martin Verran

are you still doing this

Teagan Broadhead

June 11th is Kamehameha Day in Hawaii and is a state holiday.

barefoot James

haha! smash Vista!

Adam "Lux-Vertas" Youdontneedtoknowmysurname

The East and the West are not relative to an individual country's location, they are global terms

Dameol

I got to ask; isn't 'western' for Hawaii is Pacific sea and china? Shouldn't it be eastern that they trade with?

Taum Wuthicharn

I blame Walpole

Pavel Yakushevich

This is so fascinating! Thank you so much for making this! I love learning the histories of less well known countries and kingdoms, so this is especially interesting to me.

Colin

And now we await, with baited breath, the First Episode of the Bronze Age Collapse. P.S: Brief General Election News Update ~ it's a Hung Parliament! At least we've got that behind us.
