Jamaican-born Mary Seacole faced down challenge after challenge on her path to becoming a famed Crimean War nurse.

Yep, these episodes have all been Lil!

Extra History

I'm actually quite interested in how you'll make early Christian herecies. It seems more for a topic for a mini-series than a full 6 weeks series.

Parker

Did Lil illustrate this? I'm just curious because she put a vale over here face in the John Snow series and if this is her she gave herself a mustache. Nice creativity if this is you Lil!

Parker

On the plus side, I believe that Mary Seacole survived on the UK national curriculum despite attempts to get her off of it by the British government, so there is the possibility that this two parter could be used in British schools... Unfortunately remaining 'optional' (as in 'can be taught if the teacher has time, not required to be taught')

Stephen

Crap! This game autosaves so I can't even reload and do it over!

Extra History

I consider that a missed opportunity that you just now hit.

KvaGram

We try to get a nice mix of stuff that's taught in schools (because that gives teachers more resources!) and stuff that a lot of people won't have heard about (because that gets more people interested in history!). :)

Extra History

I thought long and hard before deciding not to make the post about her an Undertale reference. "Seeing Mary Seacole succeed through many challenges fills you with determination..."

Extra History

I love these "unsung heroes" series! You discuss things we've heard about, like the Crimean War and cholera, but you introduce us to people we've never heard of, and probably should know more about. Great stuff!

Øyvind Wallentinsen

I like her extreme determination. Quite inspiring actually.

KvaGram

Eep! I don't want to make it out to be a feud between the two of them - they met, but never worked together and certainly not against each other. Both are deserving of having more light shed on their accomplishments, though, so we're happy we have the chance to talk about Mary's life right now!

Extra History

I try to list them every time we have a new vote coming up, but yeah, I need to get something more permanent. Right now, after the Mary Seacole mini series, we're looking at: Justinian & Theodora --> Suleiman the Magnificent --> Early Christian Heresies And the next vote is gonna be really soon!

Extra History

So stoked for the next episode! I'm studying nursing now, and I was definitely frustrated that the Nightingale/Seacole feud wasn't discussed in more depth. Thanks for shedding more light on the story EH!

Aaron Voigt

Yay, new series! :D (by the way, is there some site or blog post that says which episode topics are coming next?)

Arturo Gutierrez

Absolutely if it gets voted in!

Extra History

Great start of a series. I look forward to hearing more. Btw, any chance we could have a series on the Crimean war? I just realized watching this that it's a gap in my knowledge!

Todd Carter

OH MY GOSH I just got the joke about how she "sometimes looked down her nose" at others and Lil has her put up a little prosthetic nose (since the bean people don't have noses!) so she can look down it!!!!! DYING OF JOY.

Amy Reynolds

I'm so glad to hear this, thank you <3 <3

Zoe Alleyne

Yeah, I saw that sentiment from several quarters while researching this mini series. I made a point of not contrasting the two of them in this series, for the reason above! And thanks for the tips, and the new silly history show, both of you. ;)

Extra History

The Mary Seacole song is the better sketch for her, imo, than the White Lie sketch. However... While I agree with you, whenever anyone seems to suggest acknowledging Seacole int he UK, it always seems to draw objections from Nightengale fans who think that acknowledging any other nurse from that period is taking attention away from Nightengale that should rightfully be hers. It's downright bizarre. (I'd also suggest looking up the Cleopatra song and remembering while listening to it that this is a show aimed at 10 year olds. Same goes for the Dick Turpin song, come to thing of it, for very different reasons [Seriously, ok, I agree that Stand and Deliver is the right song to parody for Dick Turpin but... How many 8-10 year olds circa the early 2010s are going to be familiar with the source material of the parody?])

Stephen

I hadn't seen that before! Cute show, although I do wish they hadn't pitted Florence Nightengale and Mary Seacole against each other in their skit. Two wonderfully accomplished women can exist in the same time and space without either one taking away from the other's achievements!

Extra History

Oh, Mary Seacole! :O I think I saw an episode about her on Horrible Histories! Can't wait to see what you all have in store for us. XD

Ashley Lau

It still can if it wins a vote! Hopefully seeing someone famous for her role in the war will get more people curious to learn more of the story.

Extra History

I love that so many people are enjoying her earrings as much as I did! That was a really nice touch from Lil.

Extra History

Soooooon! 10am PST tomorrow!

Extra History

Lil makes us all look good! And thank you, I'm really proud of how it came together. :)

Extra History

Unstoppable people are a frequent feature in history!

Extra History

Oh, no fair! Gmail lists your name as something very different from "Stephen," so that's how I remembered you. ;)

Extra History

Hopefully the Crimean War will get its own series one of these days. Great episode!

Kyle Clark

Love her earrings. Great work as always!

Martin Ockovsky

To be fair, you did tell me by e-mail this two part series was coming and that you were writing it ;)

Stephen

Also really happy to see a story about a woman! And this is great. I'm very excited for the next video. And for this to go up on the channel so I can link all my friends (=

AV

Good for you, Soraya!!! It's a beautifully written piece of work and I'm loving it! (P.S. Again with the almost animation-speed art, ftw!!!) And loving those M S earrings by the way. :D

Amy Reynolds

As I'm writing this I can already say that the first words out of my mouth watching this episode were "Ugh...another story about someone that fate just dumps on." But, after I said that I realized, that's what makes these people giants. John Snow, Admiral Yi and now Mary Seacole are giants of history. But it's not just because of the things that they do, it's the things that happened to them that made them rise above when others would have given up. And it's so easy for people to just gloss over the difficult parts of their lives and shine the light on only their accomplishments. While I can't say that I won't ever stop that earlier thought from being uttered when I see it happen, I can honestly say it'll be followed by "Just how bad ass is this guy/girl gonna be inspite of all these set backs." So thank you Extra Credits. Also, I love how you guys have been hiding the named character's initials lately. Those are some nifty earrings Mary is sporting.

Sean Sarff

Awesome, thank you so much!

William Icenrose

Trust me, we don't want our series to be only about men, either. In the same way that we're trying to cover different types of history (medicine, economics, war) and different geographical periods (Africa, Asia, Europe), we want this to be about HISTORY - everyone's history, and as much of it as we can get!

Extra History

I know I was personally leaving lots of comments about it, but it's only because I feel that when we talk about "history" we often default to men, and "women's history" it it's own niche. I'm glad this video exists and hopefully she won't be the token woman of the series, because there are so many interesting women in history. Thank you!

Zoe Alleyne

You noticed! <3 James and Dan were very supportive of me giving this a try. Pretty excited to see it come out now!

Extra History

You'll be happy to know that her autobiography is a free classic with an ebook version on Amazon!

Extra History

See, this is why I love this series - finding out about total badasses from bygone eras of history. I have much reading to do about Mary Seacole now!

William Icenrose

Awesome to see this series. Also nice to see stuff written by Soraya rather than James for a change.

Stephen

Me either! Next time we get to see her reach the Crimean War, which is the part of her life she's most famous for!

Extra History

Lil made me facepalm when she put that in.

Extra History

I feel a little sheepish about the fact that it's taken so long, but yes, we were aware that Theodora didn't get enough playtime in her shared series to really fulfill this need! We'd love to do better.

Extra History

Excellent episode. Can't wait for the next one.

Hasan Mahmood

Jamaica me tense

Jane

A woman, a woman, finally a woman! And a woman of colour! Thank you!!
