Why sacking Ange was ultimately the smart decision

with Jon Mackenzie

Comments

So many players pushed up high, trying to stretch the play, and we refuse to play over the top.

"our build up is only as good as our one touch passes." been saying this for ages. my issue with ange's tactics is that it heavily relies on a series of difficult technical moves to all go perfectly. One of the lets say 8 one or two touch passes needed to get into the perfect attaching position goes awry we either lose the ball or are not positionally setup to find an open player.

Also, the overloading at the back post… because the rest of the team has drifted across… is why I’m not buying any bullshit about Porro supposedly being a bad defender. He’s stitched up and isolated.

Reuben

The Bentancur-Bergvall stuff half way in… … I think Bergvall causes these problems with his inexperience. He’s consistently misreading play and causing problems for teammates. It’s not his fault. he’s just inexperienced. At the same time he’s been pushed into the job without being given a clear idea of what to do. Sarr has the same issue.

Interesting. I like the probabilistic argument. Was curious to hear more about which of the coaching staff might be responsible for implementing/tweaking pressing strategy? Obviously Ange carries the can and has overall responsibility Just thinking from a probabilistic perspective that the decision ultimately must have come down to “clear the decks and start again (again)” vs an analyst in sporting director office saying “this is where you suck, and how can we help you fix it”. Seems like the later was judged as lower probability of success. And John nails what success actually is - Levy only cares about league position.

Enjoyed this- found myself agreeing by the end of the video. Thanks

Really enjoyed this type of game specific analysis, got my spurs analysis fix and also learned a bit about how you both think and perceive the game.

agreed, the past 18 months from a football/tactics POV haven't been great in the league. I love that we won a cup this season and wouldn't trade it, but the what i've seen on the pitch suggests our league finish (bottom half, not close to europe) was not a fluke. i'm not convinced he'd ever find the balance between progressive possession based football & the defensive rigidity needed to finish top 5 best of luck to ange. i'll cheer for that man pretty much wherever he goes

Nathan, you’ve got to be kidding me. You and Jon are two of the smartest people on the football world! How could analyzing one game be a useful exercise in deciding whether a manager is the right man for the job? And if you do think that’s the case, I’ve got a shiny Aston Villa game to recommend. Ultimately in every game Spurs do a million brilliant things, and a million foolish things. You write off the data that supports this team being good when healthy, but why?

Ben Smith

Was needing some logic in these times. I'm still super sad about it but you and Jon are a needed voice of reason

Jace Tucker

Too soon.
