Unlike other kingdoms in Etheria, Halfmoon doesn't have a royal family.
Princesses to be Queens are chosen by the community based on their abilities. They must prove to be good leaders, compassionate, strong and intelligent. When the reign of a new Magicat begins, a group of young magicats are selected to be trained and educated to become a Princess.
Catra was one of them. She lost her parents when she was little and was raised by the Magicat community. At the age of six she went to live in the palace for her education as a princess. There she met G'ali, another would-be princess, also an orphan like her, as well as Oola, the future Shaman of Halfmoon whose family also lived in the palace.
When she came of age, Catra showed that she was the most suitable to be a Princess, surprising the queen herself with her strength, intelligence, and good heart.
