So frustrating to fall fifty words short of the week's target! But then, it's been a busy week. Chapter 5 was published; I hope you enjoyed it. I found a bunch of Fraylim's art that patrons may have lost access to when I set up the new tiers, so that shoud be fixed, now. Apologies for the flurry of emails: I wanted to make sure patrons knew that art was there, it's great stuff. Also, there's a new tier - no new benefits, just a touch more generous, if that's something that might interest you.

Most significantly--for me, anyway--I formally established what I'm doing here as a "business," operating as a Sole Trader. Though I'm a rather small Patreon as far as side hustles go, it's still drawing down enough annually that I've got to worry about HMRC coming knocking. There was a hilarious moment when I had to consider what I'd call my business. Volumina International? Cindavid Creatives? In any case, there's a tax code and paperwork winging its way to me, and it all feels terribly grown up. I look forward to filing art commissions or a new laptop as expenses, and I wonder whether I can claim a trip into London and drinks at the All Bar One in Holborn as tax deductible research for Who Made the Lamb? Does subscribing to similar Patreons or buying books with the same theme qualify as assessing the market?

Anyway, that's all very silly. Next week:

--> a repost of artwork by Fraylim, now linked to the chapter in progress.

--> a sneak peek of the current chapter, revisiting Cindy's 'date' with Jonas--unless I get the whole thing done, in which case it won't be a sneak peek, it'll be the final draft. The chapter is progressing well, and exploring areas I hadn't expected to cover, including a glimpse into David's time in Japan a few years prior to the start of Constant in All Other Things.

That's very helpful, thank you! I hadn't even considered claiming the so-called "writer's retreat", that's a brilliant idea. I'll get in touch with HMRC once my tax code comes through, and all that stuff.

From my time, back in the day, as a sole trader, I recommend calling HMRC about any questions like this. I suspect you will be able to claim the expenses and probably even be able to claim for your writing retreat a few months ago... I once went away to Greece for 3 weeks pursuing a romance that failed very quickly. I promptly got a place of my own, started (and finished) writing a manual for my business and successfully claimed travel expenses for the whole trip. The point is not that you can get away with stuff but that, if you are performing these activities for the business then you can claim expenses for them. But as I say for peace of mind run it past the HMRC.
